Brownlow Medallist
Last week was a massive week and because the results went certain ways, this week is bigger. EP and WP play each other this week and in the final rounds they both play Subi, so their destiny is certainly in their own hands. Whichever can beat Subi will be in the finals, I reckon.
But to this week's games.
Sowfs v Old Easts - Fri night at the harbour city. Nothing but pride on the line here and as Easts won the last derby Souths will want to seek revenge. The fact that it should also sew up top spot, should they win, is another matter. Easts got some OK form back last week and will want nothing more than to disrupt Souths finals campaign. But can McNamara, Green, Teakle, Griffiths and the younger brigade of Lucas, Swallow, Sheppard, Fasolo take it up to Bell, McGrath, Smithers, Graham, Hams x 2, et al? I actually think this should be a close game because Souths have lost most of their potency in attack, at the moment, and Easts are a reasonable defensive side, but can they run with the Doggies?
EP v WP - the rivalry will take on a whole new level this weekend. EP win and go 2 points ahead of WP, if they lose they can kiss finals goodbye. EP have been at their best in the second half of the season when they have been aggressive and desperate. Merrington is a pretty good foil down forward, with Noakes. Clarke v Seaby will be extremely influential and interesting. Wulff generally leads the way in the desperation stakes for thee Royals, much the same as Salecic does for the Falcons. Can Cowell, Hutchings, Duncan, Hutchins, Travers, Hancock and Oliver overrun Chambers, Rice, Smoker, Tsalikis, Lasscock, Darling? The young guns on display will be worth watching as well, Hutchings, Duncan, Stratton, Darling, Bewick. Royals in a close one!
Peel v Claremont - to determine who finishes on the bottom. Peel have been extraordinarily disappointing, after a bright start to the season, but still have enough talent to push most sides, but they just don't seem to deliver (unless it's against Swans or East Freo - they like to beat those 2 sides). The Tigers have a heap of young talent coming through this year and the real interest in this game is probably Wilson, Morabito, Luff from Peel up against Fyfe, Colyer (I hope those 2 get a league gig this week), Winmar, Weedon, Davies. The Tigers by 2-4 goals.
Swans v Perth - a must win for Swans to ensure they are actually participating in the finals. Perth had had a few good weeks leading up to the belting of a lifetime by the enemy last week. Hopefully that softened them up for Swans this week
, but i have trepidation about games like this where the Demons have nothing to lose but mess up our finals chances. On paper Cook, Armstrong, Jones, Moody, Thornton, Ferguson, K-T are competitive with all sides. Swans group of Lange, Spaanderman, Roberts, Jetta, Notte, Ames, Casserley and Colreavy (if back) will have to be at their best ot make sure they close the gap on Subi and are in the finals. Should be a good match but I'm hoping Swans win comfortably.
Enjoy your weekend of footy and take care.
