Brownlow Medallist
Well, we had some pretty interesting games and results last weekend. Can the 2 teams that have started 3 and 0 continue? Will they still have their AFL players to continue with and can the Tiges, with an average winning margin of nearly 100 points, get one back on their cross town rivals, the Lions?
We'll start with the best game first.
Sharks v Swans - for pity's sake, is their any danger the Sharks board can spend some of the money they get from AFL draftees upgrading this sewerage dumping ground? Someone told myself and a West Perth guy I was chatting too that Shark Park had been blown away in those recent storms. We both agreed that would be the best thing that could've happened!
The Sharks have been getting over the line in all three matches, last kick win over Perth, just outlasting the Royals and another last gasp win over Peel. Dawson got Swans running game up and going after quarter time on the weekend and if they play like that again, I suspect the Sharks will need to bring a better A game. They may lose Dalziell or Stevens to the AFL, Swans defence isn't bad with Notte and Ames playing the key defensive posts, so where are the goals coming from? McNamara was listed as FF last week and they'll need a fair bit more from the FF, I reckon. When's the SF youngster likely to make his debut? Kyanga kicked a bag last week and will keep Pratt's hands full.
The Sharks have long had a good running game and nothing seems to have changed this year, with Venditti, Monk, Green, McGough, Fasolo, et al. Swans would like Davis back, Roach had a pretty good debut, Riggio was quieter, but OK, Roberts (love him as captain), Garlett - I would like more time through the middle, Twomey, Robinson makes the midfield battle fairly even, with McGough being the real danger man, IMO.
Royals v Thunder - first time the Thunder have had to travel and they would dearly love their AIS boys back, but not sure they will be. Although last week's performance was more heartening and the Royals were involved in a pretty dour battle themselves, this could be an interesting match.
The Royals need more out of their mids and younger players IMO, as Wulff and Pickering kept them in the game on Monday. JON needs to lift and get his hands dirty, Ben Noakes is good in patches, needs to put it together for a whole game, Clarke - same as B Noakes. Roberton and Shepheard were good for parts of the game on Monday and Shepheard, particularly, probably needs to be involved in more of the play. Merrington wasn't sighted much on Monday and whilst McKinley was good, he's one of those players that looks like they don't give a stuff.
Peel have had a very good half back line this year and if they lose Schofield out of that, there could be problems. If they lose Rosa, there are bigger problems. However, they have enough runners to take it up to East Perth, but can they?
Falcons v Sowfs - well, what can I say but the Garlics are flying. They are the antithesis of their coach, socks down, bustling Billy and they look classy, full of running. Perhaps removing Campbell from the team was the answer?
Sowfs are looked a million bucks the first week, got a few injuries, got some surprise players back and looked ordinary the next 2.
JD will be back at his stomping ground of the Arena and knows how the West Perth faithfull tick, but can he turn it around? I see improvement in Hams, T Bairstow and Phillips, in particular, McGrath is a big miss as he's ultra professional and keeps getting the job done. I have liked the glimpses I have seen of Guglielmama, Collica and Palumbo and I think the injection of the younger kids is going to be necessary to keep the older, more experienced guys on their toes. Graham's obviously not 100%, because he hasn't been able to influence games. Head still has a beautiful left foot which can be deadly and Murphy is still a class WAFL forward, so what needs to be done?
The Falcons have good forwards in Tsalikis, Darling (if playing) and LeCras, a good, honest, hard working running division, led fantastically by Salecic and a solid defence. I mean the runners are Salecic, Lamb, Rice, Crossland, Guadagnin, with Mitch Andrews thrown in to ruck. Hardly household names, are they? But they get the job done. This should be an absolute corker because the Bullies won't want to go 1-3.
Lions v Tigers - back to the heady days of the 80's, there would be a biggish crowd for this match. An undeniable hatred of the preppy boys across the railway lines would motivate any self respecting Lions player to go that extra % to nail a Tiger. I wonder if the boot will be on the other foot this week? The Tiges are up and flying and, despite winning against a miserable Perth, I'm led to believe, the Lions are the hunted this year.
The Lions still have some quality in Broadhurst, Read, Rumble, Parker, Cossom, Horsley and Hildebrandt but the depth around them seems dwindled. Their runners are older and more mature
compared to the young bucks streaming out of the centre for Claremont. Read, Cossom, Horsley, Hildebrandt, H-R against Blackwell, Stevenson, Brabazon, Foster, Schammer, Mitchell, Ninyette etc. Ones a lot quicker, but can they control the ball against the old stagers? Time will tell.
Up forward Campbell and Broadhurst will face Thompson and Laurie, or Wilkes. Whilst up forward, Rumble, despite coming off a good game, will have his hands full with C Jones and Wilkes or Richardson or Fyfe will keep Parker and co very busy! Should also be a good game this one and we'll see if Claremont can break the psychological barriers that Perth couldn't.
Hopefully the weather remains fine for our footy games and there are big crowds at each venue. Support your team the way EFH does the tiges and I reckon they should all get over the line!
