So, I've been putting a few WAFL stats in the 'Post 5 Random...' thread, but I thought I'd start up my own thread for this stuff and just keep putting things in here as I go along.

Basically, what I've been doing these past few months is doing my best to start compiling WAFL match scores, goal kickers etc. into my own well of information. I've got far too many spreadsheets across the place with different stuff in them, but the long journey has begun and there's no end in sight.

I may double up with some info that I've already posted but I don't mind. Would be cool to have it all in one place.

Needless to say, if anyone's got any information they want to send my way then it's more than welcome. Especially goal scorers or teams.

I've got 5 years worth of WAFL match data that I extracted, cleaned up, and is now ready to be put into any database, excel file, stats analysis package, etc.

If you have any collection of SANFL PDF stats reports, i'll be happy to do the straight swap. I know the SANFL release them as PDF's for each round, but their website only has 2010's stats. I'm looking to get back to 2007 at least. Can't find previous year's PDF's anywhere on the net.

Yeah - I've noticed that one. Great info.

My Father-in-law just lent me his copies of the 1974-1990 WA Football Register (minus 1981), so the amount of info available is mind-boggling.

In the 1980's, there were 249 scores of 150 points or more.

The highest was South Fremantle's 40.18 (258) versus West Perth in Round 21, 1981.

The 249 scores can be broken down the following ways:

By score range:

250-259: 2
240-249: 2
230-239: 2
220-229: 4
210-219: 2
200-209: 6
190-199: 16
180-189: 26
170-179: 44
160-169: 72
150-159: 73

The most goals scored in these games was 40 by South Fremantle (as above), and the most behinds was 32 in Swan Districts' 27.32 (194) vs Subiaco in Round 5, 1980.

Broken down by team (For/Against):

Claremont: 47/10
East Fremantle: 37/36
East Perth: 17/37
Perth: 18/55
South Fremantle: 39/29
Subiaco: 24/36
Swan Districts: 48/23
West Perth: 19/23

In the 249 Instances where a team scored over 150 points, the opposition scored over 100 points 109 times (with a further 38 scores of 90-99).

The highest losing score was West Perth's 24.7 (151) when defeated by East Perth 26.15 (171) in Round 4, 1982. This, surprisingly, is the only instance of two teams scoring 150 points or more in the same match throughout the 1980s.

The lowest score when a team scored 150 points or more was 29, which was scored twice;

West Perth 37.17 (239) defeated South Fremantle 4.5 (29) in Rd 10, 1987
East Fremantle 27.15 (177) defeated Perth 3.11 (29) in Rd 17, 1989.

The highest winning margin was West Perth's 210-point win over South Fremantle (as above).

The smallest winning margin when scoring over 150 points was 7 points, when East Fremantle 23.17 (155) defeated Swan Districts 20.28 (148).

Only ten of these scores of 150 and above were scored in finals.

Did you know that Robert Wiley scored 1.8 in debut game for Perth in 1974?

Don't feel too hard on him though - he backed this up with 8.3 in his second game.

August 11, 1979 (Round 17)

A shitload of things happened on this day:

1) Barry Cable (then the Captain Coach for East Perth) played his 400th game of football.

2) East Fremantle kicked their highest-ever league score in defeating West Perth 32.23 (215) to 19.12 (126). This match set a new record for highest match score in the WAFL. The previous match total record was 316 points, set in 1978 when South Fremantle beat Swan Districts 29.28 (202) to 17.12 (114).

3) The total round score of 1182 points set a new WAFL record.

However, there was another game which happened that day:

I've made mention in other threads to the Rd 17, 1979 game between Swan Districts and Subiaco. The final score in this match was:

Swan Districts 40.11 (251)
defeated
Subiaco 20.7 (127)
by 124 points.

A few things about this game:

1) Leading goalscorer on the day was Swan Districts' Mark Olsen, who bagged 13.3. Subiaco's Gary Buckenara had 27 kicks, 7 handpasses, took 17 marks and kicked 9.1 in a losing effort.

2) Not surprisingly, the total match score of 60.18 (378) was and still is a WAFL record. So, sorry East Fremantle vs West Perth... your record never stood.

Some other points of note...

3) Swan Districts also became the first team to score 200 points twice in a season.

4) Their other score of 200+ was also against Subiaco - this time in Round 5 when they won 31.16 (202) to 11.12 (78).

5) In fact, Swan Districts and Subiaco met three times during 1979 and these were the results:

Rd 5 - SD 31.16 (202) defeated Subiaco 11.12 (78) by 124 points
Rd 12 - SD 21.26 (152) defeated Subiaco 4.12 (36) by 116 points
Rd 17 - SD 40.11 (251) defeated Subiaco 20.7 (127) by 124 points

6) Mark Olsen's bags against Subiaco in the year? 8.2, 8.6 and 13.3

And what did it count towards? Not much. You see....

7) Swan Districts, who despite winning their last five games of the season to finish with a 12 win, 9 loss season, missed the final four.

8) They did however win their first 13 games of the 1980 season, before eventually ending up the defeated Grand Finallists.

9) They were beaten that day by Mal Brown's South Fremantle, who won their final 12 matches of the season before sweeping the finals series. Leading goalkicker for South Fremantle that day was Noel Carter, who kicked four goals.

10) A notable absentee from the Swan Districts line-up that day (and in fact that whole year) was full-forward Mark Olsen. Despite kicking 84 goals in 1979, he never played another game for Swan Districts. Cleared to reigning premiers East Fremantle in 1980, he played in the first game of the season before breaking down with an ankle injury. He never played WAFL football again as far as I can tell.

Pretty sure I've got some of the same resources as you.

Have added Archie Duda of East Perth/Subiaco/Perth, Brad Smith of Subiaco and Ted Holdsworth of Swan Districts.

Duda Kicked 493 goals for East Perth in six seasons, then was transfered to Subiaco and Perth in 1980. My records for some 1980 games are a tad sketchy (goalkickers missing), so his 508 goals is preliminary only.

Holdsworth was the first Swan Districts player to kick over 100 goals in a season, kicking 109 goals in 1937 and 116 the following season.

I've also update Warren Ralph's tally to include the 4 goals he kicked in 1989. He only came back and played two games in the seniors, kicking 2.6 and 2.0 before not playing again.

Surprising lack of 500+ goalkickers. However, the lure of playing over in the VFL/AFL has stunted the progress.

The only reason, I suspect, Brad Smith is on this list is because of his injuries. He was on the WCE list before eventually being cut at the end of 2006, but still came back for Subiaco and kicked 126.42 in 2007, 110.50 in 2008 and then finished his career off with 52.36 in 2009. Had he stayed healthy, he would have been a great forward option for the Eagles.

Just finished a huge audit (so to speak) of the 1979 season. East Fremantle were premiers, East Perth's Phil Kelly won his second straight Sandover Medal, and East Fremantle rover Kevin Taylor was the leading goalkicker with 86 goals in the H&A season (he'd add another 16 in the finals to take his season tally to 102).

Geoff Marsh as well. Played for South Fremantle in the late 70s.

Will try and get some details soon.

Also, Mick Malone was a pretty decent goalkicker for some terrible Subiaco teams in the late 70s. Kicked 11.8 in one 1978 game.

Malone kicked 55 goals for Subi in 1978, to head their goalkicking. He also played in their 1973 premiership.

Neil Hawke kicked 114 goals for East Perth in 1959. He lost the best and fairest to Polly Farmer, but headed the league goalkicking and played in a premiership. Also played in East Perth's 1958 premiership.

Keith Slater was Swan Districts' best and fairest in 1956, 1957 and 1960 and won a Simpson Medal in the 1961 Grand Final. He then played in the 1962 and 1963 premierships.

Here's an interesting one involving Tony Micale.

In 1997, East Fremantle was celebrating its centenery, and Tony Micale was coach. The Sharks looked set to win the flag in the Grand Final, but arch rival South Fremantle came storming back in the last quarter, winning a thrilling match by a goal.

The next year, East Fremantle, with Micale still as coach, was determined to make up for this, and defeated the West Perth Falcons in the 1998 Grand Final. This proved to be Micale's last match coaching the Sharks, as he joined South Fremantle the following year...

South Fremantle's own centenery year was this year (1999), and in his only year as coach of the Bulldogs, it looked as though South would do what East Fremantle couldn't do - take the flag in its centenery. Unfortunately, South were flat when it really mattered, and the team beaten by East Fremantle the previous year, West Perth, beat the Bulldogs to take the 1999 premiership.

Micale then joined East Perth, which had not won a flag since 1978 and had finished second last in 1999. Micale coached the Royals to the flag in his first year, and the side proceeded to win the 2001 & 2002 flags as well under the guidance of Micale. Unbelievably, the sides beaten to win these flags were East Fremantle (2000), South Fremantle (2001) and West Perth (2002)!

Austin Robertson Jr played three games against West Perth in 1967 and kicked 26.11 in those games (8.3, 10.2 & 8.6).

Big hauls.

Subiaco lost all three games.

In 1968 (the year Robertson kicked 162 goals), his hauls in his three games against the Cardinals were 6.0, 6.4 & 6.0.

Subiaco again lost all three games.

That's a six game stretch, all losses, where Robertson kicked 45.15

What are some other big goal hauls by WAFL players in losing teams? I believe Ted Tyson kicked 17 in a losing effort for West Perth vs Swan Districts in 1938.

That's easily the biggest.

Swan Districts 18.15 (123)
West Perth 18.7 (115)

Goalkickers:

SD: Holdsworth, 7.1; Sweetapple. 2.4; Andrews, 2.2; Mc Inerney, 2.2; Avery, 2.1; Symonds, 1.1; Sinclair, 1.1; Krepp, 1.0; Ditchburn, 0.2. (One behind forced through).
West Perth: Tyson, 17.5; O'Keefe, 1.1; Pola, 0.1.

West Perth led by 4 goals at 3/4 time, but Swans kicked 11.4 to 7.1 in the last quarter to win the match.

Haven't got my records collected as far as that year just yet, but the years I do have data down for (1933, 1966-69, 1972, 1974-1990, 1994-2010), there have been 695 five goal hauls in a losing side. Here's the ten biggest in that time:

1) 11.2 - Mark Olsen - SD v SF, Rd 7 1978
2) 10.6 - Phil Tierney - EP v SF, Rd 21, 1968
3) 10.4 - Austin Robertson Jr - S v EP, Rd 17, 1968
4) 10.2 - Austin Robertson Jr - S v WP, Rd 12, 1968
5) 10.2 - Norm Uncle - C v SD, Rd 12, 1976
6) 10 - Jason Heatley - S v WP, 2nd Semi Final, 1995
7) 10 - Dean Buzsan - Peel v SD, Rd 6, 2000
8) 9.6 - Ray Bauskis - SF v S, Rd 12, 1977
9) 9.4 - Wayne Harvey - C v EF, Rd 5, 1966
10) 9.3 - Simon Beasley - SD v SF, Rd 14, 1979
