Received an email from a historian at the WAFC: "there was an error in the published records for some time as a result of one of his NFL (national comp 1976-1985) games being overlooked somehow in club records."

Brian Peake @ East Fremantle: 305 games - 279 H&A games, 17 finals, 9 NFL (national comp) games

The WAFL and WA HOF sites have now been corrected.

Round 21 review online now
Highlights:
East Perth's highest score vs Perth
South Fremantle end record losing streak vs Swans
Claremont end Subiaco's 5 game winning streak
West Perth and peel play out their second lowest scoring game

http://www.waflfootyfacts.net/Seasons/2014/rnd_21_review.php

I've got the Royals' 28.14 (182) as their second-highest score since 1984, beaten only by the 188 vs Peel in 2010. Sound right to you, Ric?

With the 2014 WAFL season just around the corner, here is a list of the longest droughts in the WAFL. One wonders if they will break this year, or any time soon:

LEAGUE PREMIERSHIP: Perth has not won since they trounced East Fremantle in 1977.

GRAND FINAL APPEARANCE: Perth's last Grand Final appearance was way back in 1978, when East Perth narrowly beat the Demons in teeming rain.

MINOR PREMIERSHIP: Perth last headed the ladder in 1978.

RODRIEGUEZ SHIELD: Again, success-starved Perth last won this award for the best team in all grades in 1978

FINALS APPEARANCE: Perth last played finals in 1997, while Peel Thunder has never played finals since commencing the same year.

WOODEN SPOON: WAFL powerhouse Claremont last finished bottom in 1975. Gough Whitlam was Prime Minister at the time.

SIMPSON MEDAL: Wim Rosbender is the last Perth player to win a Simpson Medal when best afield in the 1977 Grand Final

SANDOVER MEDAL: No West Perth player has won the Sandover Medal since Neil Mildenhall in 1993.

LEADING GOAL-KICKER: An individual award that has eluded West Perth for over 40 years, with no Falcon topping the goal-kicking since Phil Smith in 1973

FINALS MEETING: The last finals match played between Perth and West Perth was the First Semi Final in 1976, won by the Demons

TEAMS IN THE SAME FINALS SERIES: The last finals series to contain both Perth and West Perth was 1978.

CENTURY WIN: Peel has never won a game by 100-points or more since their 1997 debut

RESERVES PREMIERSHIP: West Perth has developed a hoodoo in the Reserves Grand Final, last winning it in 1960. They have lost plenty of times along the way, most recently to South Fremantle in 2013.

COLTS PREMIERSHIP: Subiaco won its first, and to date only Colts premiership in 1989. West Perth last won the Colts a year later in 1990.

GRAND FINAL MATCH-UPS: The last time Subiaco and Perth played off in a Grand Final was in 1915, and it is hard to imagine that drought ending at 99 years this year. A number of the 8 traditional WAFL clubs have never met in a Grand Final, and these are Swan Districts vs Perth, Swan Districts vs West Perth and Claremont vs Perth.
DRAWN GAMES: East Fremantle has not played a draw since tying with West Perth in the 1989 First Semi Final, with the Sharks winning the replay. Had this game been played just 2 years later, it could not have been a draw as extra time would have been played. Unbelievably, this tie with the Falcons is East Fremantle's only drawn game since 1974. Some other WAFL clubs have also not drawn for more than a decade, and these are South Fremantle in 1997, and Subiaco in 2001.

With the WAFL season finishing today with a comprehensive upset victory by the Subiaco Lions over the East Perth Royals in wet conditions in the Grand Final, the first meeting of these clubs in the season decider since 1959, I thought it would be interesting to see if any of these droughts I posted at the start of the season broke this year.

Two did, and were the victory by West Perth in the Reserves Grand Final for the first time since 1960; and Aaron Black becoming the first West Perth player to win a Sandover Medal since Neil Mildenhall way back in 1993. Mainly due to another very poor season by Perth, none of the others did, and while East Fremantle frequently play close games, they still have not drawn since 1989.

It must be irksome to East Perth, given the loss to Subiaco today, that they now inherit the droughts that their arch-rivals West Perth ended. East Perth's last Reserves premiership was in 1983, when Brian Burke was WA Premier, Bob Hawke Prime Minister and Australia II won the America's Cup. The last Royal to win the Sandover Medal was Ryan Turnbull in 2001.

Actually, the figures given by the WAFC say Subiaco won the Colts in 1974 as well. Three others are:

100-POINT LOSSEast Fremantle have not lost by 100 points or more since South Fremantle beat them by a record 157 points on Foundation Day of 2006. I might note that:
  1. Subiaco and West Perth both lost by over 100 points in 2012, but otherwise have not lost by over 100 points since Round 16, 1998 and Round 10, 1991 respectively
  2. Claremont’s most recent 100-point loss, by 131 points to the invincible 2008 Subiaco team is their only one since 1977
PRENDERGAST MEDALSwan Districts last won a Prendergast Medal for the best and fairest in the reserves competition in 1979 when that award went to Vince Reid. (Peel Thunder have not won a Prendergast Medal since entering in 1997).

JACK CLARKE MEDALSouth Fremantle last won a Jack Clarke Medal for the best and fairest in the Colts competition in 1984 when that award went to Stephen Rowe. (Despite having been less unsuccessful than in the senior grades, Peel Thunder have not won a Jack Clarke Medal since entering in 1997).

None of these additional droughts broke in 2014. In the 2014 WAFL season, the minor premier (East Perth) suffered the biggest loss of the season (100 points) for the first time in the WAFL since West Perth against Swan Districts in Round 20 1975. The only other case I know in any league is North Melbourne against Fitzroy in Round 13 of the 1983 VFL season. As a quiz question, what player played for both that 1975 Swan Districts team and the 1983 Fitzroy one (and while we’re on the topic was on the receiving end of a similar thrashing in Round 13 of the 1978 VFL season).

Of course – I knew you’d know that! I’d love to interview Garry Sidebottom about those three games – it would be really interesting for a football history book or website.

Am I correct that 2014 and 1975 are the only seasons where the minor premier has suffered the biggest loss of the season?

Is there any other WAFL season besides the conspicuous cases of 1956 and 1996 where the premiers have kicked the lowest score of the year (Swan Districts did so when they were minor premiers in 1965 but lost the Grand Final)?

Would a table of highest and lowest scores of season, with frequency by club, be possible?

I'm not sure whether those queries were aimed at me specifically, but (if so) I don't keep WAFL stats (AFL only) so can't help. Hopefully one of the WAFL gurus will be able to answer.

It is also amazing that no second-semi finals or preliminary finals have ever been drawn.
I forgot to say this back in 2012, but the 1983 reserves Preliminary Final between Swan Districts and West Perth was drawn at a time when the senior WA(N)FL had not seen a tie for 868 matches (twice as long as the VFL/AFL record)! It's remarkable that there was an omen of sorts as to when that draw "megadrought" would break - the only previous draw "megadrought" in the WA(N)FL broke in 1957 at Leederville between South Fremantle and West Perth, and this one did too six rounds into 1984.
Shouldn't be a problem. How far back do you want to go?

(will check the others for you as well)
As far back as possible - certainly back to 1919 but I imagine it can be done as far back as 1901?
