Last year some place was doing tackles, inside 50s etc. I think it was prowess or something like that, it was very comprehensive.

Some ladder-based top tens coming up over the next few days. Here's the first.

For the purpose of this thread - I'm including 1942, 1943 and 1944 as official seasons of the WAFL.

For those that don't know, the WAFL was run as an underage competition during these years, however since the league handed out Sandover Medals during these years, and since games played during this time have seemingly been added to players' tallies, I'm counting them as proper seasons.

Besides, record books change a bit when you include them, and that's always fun!

The great Stephen Michael won Sandover Medals in 1980 and 1981.

Before 1985, the WAFL counted votes in the usual 3-2-1 format. This changed to 5-4-3-2-1 in 1985.

What's remarkable about Michael's win in 1981 was that he tallied 37 votes in the 3-2-1 format. Not only was this a record in that format, his tally would be good enough to win 12 Sandover Medals post-1985, when everyone else had access to 9 more votes per game.

Just to show that I haven't abandoned this thread... here's a couple from this past weekend's action.

Claremont 16.7 (103) def East Perth 15.9 (99). The reserves score that day between the same two teams? Claremont 16.7 (103) def East Perth 15.9 (99)

Finally - South Fremantle overcame a 50-point deficit at 3 quarter time against Perth on Saturday night to win 19.14 (128) to 19.6 (120). Not sure where that ranks in the grand scheme of things, but I think it would be in the top 5 best WAFL comebacks ever.

More coming soon hopefully!

I couldn't believe those Claremont scores when I saw them online and thought it was a mistake, coincidently the colts margin between Claremont/East Perth was also 4 points this time in favour of the Royals.

Alas I, unfortunately was not at Fremantle Oval on Saturday night to see Souths great comeback.

Keep up the good work with the stats:thumbsu:

The case of the missing goal

The career of Ted Tyson is largely undocumented. Despite having one of the ends at Subiaco Oval named in his honour, you don't find his name bandied about too often with the great full-forwards of WA Football... which is insane.

The stats speak for themselves - 1197 goals in 228 games at an average of 5.25 goals per game. The first WA Footballer to kick 1000 goals in his career, the second (after George Doig) to boot 100 in a season.

But, according to my calculations, the historians have got things (ever-so slightly) wrong. I've done the sums and there's a goal missing. I've only got him down as scoring 1196 goals in his career.

1930 - 50
1931 - 81
1932 - 96
1933 - 88
1934 - 143
1935 - 119.45
1936 - 86.32
1937 - 124.64
1938 - 126.56
1939 - 100.46
1940 - 54.27
1941 - 111.41
1945 - 18

Total - 1196

It's 1936 where there's some confusion and where a phantom goal appears. In Round 12, Tyson booted 5 goals in a loss to Swan Districts, and also got slightly injured in the process, according to reports. The West Australian listed the league's leading goal scorers as at the end of the round, and there Ted Tyson sat with 59 goals, two behind George Doig.

Tyson's injury is enough to keep him out of the Round 13 clash against Claremont, which West Perth won convincingly 17.21 (123) to 7.18 (60). The match report even mentions his absence ("Although without Marinko, Tyson, Pola and P. Walsh...").

Yet, as the West did each round, they tabled the leading goalkickers at the end of each round, and there Ted Tyson was with 60 goals to his name, and increase of one from the week before even though he didn't play in the game. That one goal stayed in his tally right through the season, where he's credited with scoring 87 for the season, not 86 as it seemingly should be.

One of the curious things I guess about a league which was still moving out of its relative infancy.

Can someone post or tell me where I can find Claremont stats.

thanks for the stats they are awesome

Not a problem. As for scoring 200+ against East Fremantle... it's only ever been accomplished three times:

From the pages of The West Australian, Monday August 26, 1901:

SOUTH FREMANTLE V. NORTH FREMANTLE.

The match which was to have taken place on Saturday between the South. and North Fremantle teams was postponed out of respect to Mr. "Jim" Thomas, the captain of the Norths, whose fiancee had died during the week. General regret and sympathy was expressed amongst footballers with Mr. Thomas; who was to have been married the day the lady's funeral occurred. It is probable the match between the two clubs will he allowed to lapse, it having no bearing on the premiership.

The match in question was postponed until September 7, 1901, with North Fremantle defeating South Fremantle by 31 points, 8.8 (56) to 3.7 (25).

100-point wins/losses

Since 1898, there have been 290 WAFL matches which have been decided by 100 points or more. The first of these was in Round 16 of 1899, when West Perth defeated Perth 15.11 (101) to 0.1 (1), while the most recent was in Round 19 of 2011, when East Fremantle defeated Swan Districts 27.13 (175) to 11.7 (73).

Other margin facts from WAFL competition (1898-2012):

1) Starting at 1 point, the first margin which has not been achieved in a WAFL match is 137 points.

2) If my Excel skills are up to scratch, the most common margin in WAFL matches is 3 points, which has occurred 197 times.

3) The most common margin over 50 points is 56 points (81 times).

Points:

EP v SF - Rd 1, 1944:
Highest score in WAFL history. East Perth's quarter tallies were 12.8, 6.2, 12.12 and 11.8

WP v SF - Rd 10, 1987
Playing for South Fremantle that day were Scott Watters, Peter Sumich and Mark 'Jacko' Jackson, while 1991 Brownlow Medal runner-up Craig Turley laced up the boots for West Perth.

SF v S - Rd 16, 1953
Bernie Naylor booted 23.6 for South Fremantle.

SF v WP - Rd 21, 1981
Former Richmond rover Noel Carter kicked 11 goals for South Fremantle. Also playing for South Fremantle were Bruce Monteath (8 goals), Maurice Rioli (1 goal), Brad Hardie (1 goal) and Wayne Henwood (4 goals).

WP v EF - Rd 10, 1981
Combined with the above result, this meant that West Perth (to this stage of their history) had achieved their biggest-ever win and biggest lost all in the same season.

Hi

Love your work....The stats you put up are awesome reading.

Ive got one for you that i personally would find interesting.

Games in any format....practice or official cup

Thanks

That's a doozy! Not sure I can answer that one, at least not for a while.
