Ok cool.

Just something I thought of because of the foxtel cup

Subi playing Port the other week and Claremont playing West Adelaide next weekend

I think Slickmick's more after games between WAFL sides such as East Perth and SANFL sides like Glenelg ala the old Escort Cup games.

Edit: Good to see Slickmick's asked over at safooty.net - if there's anyone who'll have the data handy, it's Spelly over there.

Yes those are the games Im after.

SAFOOTY.NET is an awesome site and recommend it to any sanfl fan....From that site I have scores from 36 such matches including Port Adelaide Vs Subiaco from this years foxtel cup.

To tally up the results atm it is

WAFL teams 20wins
SANFL teams 16wins

This will change this weekend as Claremont play West Adelaide

From the pages of the Sunday Times, May 22, 1904 comes probably the best match report I've ever read:

NORTH FREMANTLE V. SOUTH FREMANTLE

The meeting of North and South Fremantle attracted only a few spectators to the North Fremantle Oval. The match was reckoned as an easy thing for North, and so it proved, South never having a look in. It would be a waste of space to describe the game. South Fremantle's form was beneath that of a second-rate junior team, and if they can't do any better they might as well drop out of the competition. The final scores were :-
North Fremantle, 10.21 (81 points)
South Fremantle, 0.4 (4 points)

Haha thats gold UFG if only the reporter of the time could see into the future hey :) ..as we all know North Freo have been kicking around in the amateurs for the last 100 years while Sowfs are still going strong in the WAFL!

There's some definite gold to be found in the pages of old newspapers.

One of my favourites was the report of Haydn Bunton Snr's first game for Subiaco, where the reporter mentioned:

H. Bunton, Subiaco's captain-coach, played for the club for the first time on Saturday, and though he was not as prominent as may have been expected, he gave a heady display.

All well and good except Bunton kicked 6.3 as a rover.

Just out of interest, I've now got quarter by quarter scores for all matches (where available) from 1898 to 1907, 1920 to 1997, 2001-02 and from 2008 until today.

Funnily enough, it's easier to find quarter by quarter scores for matches from the 1900s than it is from the late 1990s.

Once I've got all that data down, then I can bring all the meaty stuff, like highest scoring quarters (one team and both teams), biggest comebacks based on scores at end of quarters, highest percentage of total scored in a quarter, and more. Then once I've done that it's back to entering in goalscorers for matches. That's a far more time-consuming exercise, but at the moment I've got 1929-1956 and 1964 until 1990 done, and I've got the data to fill in the missing years.

Time consuming but fun (for me anyway!)

I've also got down each teams range of scores over their history (i.e 0-9, 10-19 etc), and the percentage of each team's matches that they've scored in this range. One thing I found fascinating was that Swan Districts, with their 19 or so wooden spoons, have only ever scored below 30 on 9 occasions, and have never scored lower than 20 in a match.

Points:

WP v SF - Rd 10, 1987
Playing for South Fremantle that day were Scott Watters, Peter Sumich and Mark 'Jacko' Jackson, while 1991 Brownlow Medal runner-up Craig Turley laced up the boots for West Perth.

This game is possibly the most bizarre in WAFL history. The calibre of players in the South Fremantle side is one factor, but when you consider the following:

  • South Fremantle did not lose another game by a century that season, despite being the 1987 wooden-spooner and this being a high-scoring era. They lost by about 14 goals to Claremont and Subiaco, but never by 100 points or more in any other game.
  • South Fremantle had beaten West Perth in their previous encounter, and their subsequent meeting that year was a relatively close game.
  • The Bulldogs had trounced the Falcons by 180 points 6 years earlier
  • The 1987 West Perth team was a mid-ladder team, not a premiership team like Claremont or Subiaco
  • South Fremantle were 3-0 and on top of the ladder at the close of Round 3, before losing the last 18 games of the season
  • The Bulldogs did not hit last place until the final round, with the red & whites still having a far better percentage to second-last East Perth
The only other team I can name that topped the ladder at one stage early in the season only to fall away to finish last was Sturt in the SANFL in 1994.

I was thinking about the WAFL, and drawn games are very rare in this competition. I forget the last time my own team, South Fremantle played a draw and I don't think Peel Thunder have ever drawn a game.

Does anyone have the statistics as to when was the most recent time each of the nine teams played a draw?

A couple more stats about draws:

1) There have only been five drawn finals, two of which were the 1905 and 1938 Grand Finals. The other three were the 1931, 1944 and 1989 First Semi Finals.

2) The lowest-scoring draw was in Rd 10, 1913, when West Perth drew with Perth, 3.3 (21) to 2.9 (21).

3) The highest-scoring draw was in Rd 10, 1946 when Swan Districts drew with West Perth 18.11 (119) to 17.17 (119).

Thanks Up For Grabs - I guess I was correct in saying that draws are very rare in the WAFL. No drawn games since 2010, and four teams - SF (1997), EF (1989), S (2001) & PT (no draws) having not played a tie for over a decade, and East Perth not drawing since early 2003.

It was East Fremantle's stat that amazed me - no draws since 1989! I know that the longest time without a draw in the AFL/VFL is Melbourne's 21 years from 1971 to 1992, with the Demons then waiting another 14 seasons to draw again with Geelong in 2006; although the Dockers have not drawn to date, and the Adelaide Crows' only drawn match was way back in 1994 in the wet against St Kilda at Waverley. I wonder if the Sharks have some kind of record in the major leagues, unless there are any SANFL or VFA/VFL teams that have gone longer without playing a drawn game.

It is also amazing that no second-semi finals or preliminary finals have ever been drawn.

One interesting stat is comparing the WAFL and SANFL.

Both competitions have nine teams, and from 2000 onwards seven of the nine have made at least one grand final. Those missing from the WAFL grand finals this millenium have been Perth (last GF in 1978, last flag in 1977) and Peel (no finals since joining in 1997). In the SANFL, South Adelaide have not made the GF since 1979 with their last premiership in 1964; while amazingly former powerhouse Port Adelaide Magpies last GF appearance was their 1999 premiership win over Norwood.

In the WAFL six of the seven teams to contest Grand Finals have won the premiership, with East Fremantle the only team to miss out on a premiership, having not had the chance to redeem for their 2000 GF loss.

In the SANFL, however, just three of the seven teams have won premierships in the same time, with Sturt winning one, the Eagles two and Central Districts nine.

As a result there are some long premiership droughts in the SANFL; 1999 (Port Adelaide); 1997 (Norwood); 1991 (North Adelaide); 1986 (Glenelg); 1983 (West Adelaide); 1964 (South Adelaide).

The VFL/VFA is harder to analyse, due to the instablity in the teams participating; however there are some long droughts there too; Casey Scorpions (1999); Bendigo (No premiership since joining in 1998); Werribee (1993); Coburg (1989, as the Lions); Northern/Preston (1984); Frankston (Only premiership in 1978 2nd Division).

50+ points in a quarter

Yeah, random stat, I know... but what can I say? I love high-scoring games of footy. Anyway, since 1898 there have been 2148 quarters where a team has scored 50+ or more.

Here's the breakdown by team;

2) On 199 occasions, a team has kicked 50+ points in a quarter and lost the game. On only two occasions has a team kicked 50+ points in a quarter twice in the same match and lost the game. Amazingly, both instances occurred within nine weeks of each other:

50+ points in a quarter

Yeah, random stat, I know... but what can I say? I love high-scoring games of footy.

So do I Up For Grabs, but they are becoming increasingly rare nowadays. South Fremantle and Subiaco are the exception, and often play out high-scoring and enthralling games of football in matches between them. Even one sided games, such as the 2011 First Semi Final (won by Subiaco by 85 points); and a match in the final round of 2010 where Subiaco won 33.9-207 to 21.18-144 were still good standard games.

Having said that, it isn't often that you see a game with moderately high scoring (21.9-135 to 18.18-126 for example), let alone a game which produces a 300-point aggregate, when these games were relatively common throughout the late 70s, 80s & into the early 90s.

High-scoring games in the AFL are also very rare nowadays; there have been just 3 matches to produce a 300 point aggregate since 2000, the most recent of which was a game between North Melbourne and the Bulldogs in June 2003.

I know what you mean... That SF v S match was the first match with a 300+ point accurate since 1987.

Between 2000-2010 there were only 36 WAFL matches with an aggregate score of 250 points or more.

There were 44 in 1981 alone.

Loving all these WAFL Stats UpForGrabs especially from 1981 which was my first year of watching footy as a kid. Been hooked ever since! :thumbsu:
