WAFL Tipping Competition 2020

Well, what a crazy year we've had so far. 2020 started out with bushfires all over the country with flooding rains in some parts of the eastern states followed by a once in a century virus which has caused a global pandemic, changing the world before our eyes with many of us having never experienced something like this before.

On the brighter side of things, footy is back for 2020 with the AFL already into the swing of things. This weekend marks the commencement of with the 2020 WAFL season and with it the BigFooty WAFL Tipping Competition is back for another season! The off-season saw plenty of news, transfers, clearances, retirements and other such points of interest over the summer break before the onset of COVID-19 brought things to a halt. However, with Western Australia able to bring the virus under control, the WAFL is back up and running with round one commencing this week in a fairly new look landscape with season 2020 to be something that we've never quite seen before at WAFL level. A nine round season with nine teams, only eight teams in the reserves, 16 minute quarters (plus time on) and an October Grand Final. What will the absence of the West Coast Eagles' reserves side have on the competition? How will Peel Thunder fare with no access to AFL listed Fremantle players this year? Can Perth break their finals drought and make their first finals series in more than two decades?

Last season saw Miguel Sanchez claim the 2019 tipping competition while Kram and Monocle tied for second place. Can that trio produce another stellar tipping season again this year or will someone else or perhaps even a new tipster claim season 2020 as their own?

Once again, I can announce that BigFooty have got behind the BigFooty WAFL Tipping Competition for 2020 with this year's winner to receive a year's Platinum subscription to the BigFooty Supporters' Club while our runner-up will receive a year's Gold membership. A big thank you once again to Chief and the team here at BigFooty for their continued support of the BigFooty WAFL Tipping competition and it is great to have them on board for another season. :thumbsu:

The rules for this competition are as follows,
  • Each correct tip will see you receive one point.
  • A bonus point will be awarded to the tipster who correctly guesses or is closest to the margin for the winning team in the margin game for that round. The margin game will be the televised fixture of that weekend. If there is no telecast fixture a game will be selected at random. Should there be two televised games, both games will be margin matches.
  • To receive a bonus point you must select the winning team, if no-one selects the winning side then no bonus point will be awarded.
  • Any tipsters who select the same winning margin or tie for the closest winning margin will receive one point each.
  • Tips must be placed before the commencement of the first game of the round.
  • Any tipster who misses a round will receive the lowest score of all tipsters for that round.
  • The tipping competition will run for the home and away rounds only. A separate competition for fun will be run for the finals.

The matches for round one will be posted on Tuesday evening (tomorrow) in readiness for the first round. The fixtures for each round will generally be posted on Tuesday nights to give everyone enough time to put their tips in for the upcoming round.

If you're interested in tipping for 2020, post your interest below. There's plenty of room for new tipsters or for those who have had a break from tipping in recent years so if you know someone who is interested from around the boards or your club's team board, share this thread and tell them to jump aboard and get amongst the WAFL this season. Hopefully we will have another great tipping competition and a fantastic season once more in 2020. :thumbsu:

The long wait is just about over with the 2020 WAFL season set to get underway on Saturday. It's been a long time coming with the season postponed back in March as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and it was thought that there may not be a season at all as things deteriorated quite quickly. However, the good work done by the people of Western Australia has improved the situation greatly and we are now in the position of being able to begin our state league footy competition.

Season 2020 will be a big different this year. Nine teams will compete in the League competition this year with West Coast Eagles withdrawing their side due to AFL rules regarding reserves' teams while quarters will be 16 minutes plus time on, mirroring the AFL's temporary reduction in match time due to the pandemic. The Reserves' competition has also underdone a change with Peel Thunder withdrawing their side, leaving eight teams in that grade for the coming season.

Round One Fixtures

Peel Thunder vs Perth at David Grays Arena (2pm)
Subiaco vs Claremont at Leederville Oval (2:30pm)
Swan Districts vs West Perth at Steel Blue Oval (2:30pm)
South Fremantle vs East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval (2:30pm, margin)
Bye: East Perth

After a long wait, round one is just around the corner with all games on Saturday afternoon this week and this is set to be a common theme throughout the season this year. The first game of the year has Peel Thunder hosting Perth down in Mandurah at David Grays Arena in an earlier 2pm start. This season is set be a whole new world for the Thunder who won't be able to play AFL listed Fremantle players within their side this season due to the AFL's ruling on reserves' sides for 2020. Peel have recruited a few players to cover the loss of a number of these players but how will they fare this season without the experience of their AFL players? Perth started 2019 in spectacular fashion but fell just short of a finals berth which would have been a fairly bitter pill to swallow. The Demons have lost a few players from their squad last season but have managed to pick up some handy recruits in return. Can the Demons finally get themselves into a finals series in 2020, their first in 24 years?

Next up, it's the battle of the western suburbs with Subiaco playing against Claremont at Leederville Oval. Subiaco had stellar season last year, claiming their second straight flag and fourth in six years. The Lions have lost a few players to retirement but notched up a couple of wins from their pre-season fixtures and will be looking forward to playing against the Tigers, their western suburbs rival. The Tigers showed some good form during 2019, making their way to the preliminary final before falling short against South Fremantle. Claremont have also lost a few players to retirement but have retained most of their list and will be hoping to improve on last season's performance by going a few steps further in 2020.

Down at Bassendean, Swan Districts take on West Perth at Steel Blue Oval. Swans had a season to forget in 2019, finishing on the bottom of the ladder as they collected the wooden spoon. They'll be hoping to vastly improve on that performance this season and will be hoping their young list can help them rise up the ladder in 2020. West Perth have had issues of their own of late with some major financial troubles but come into season 2020 with a fairly strong squad and they will hope to improve on their finals appearance in 2019 which ended in an elimination final loss to the Eagles. Expect this game to be a tight tussle both the Swans and Falcons hope to put 2019 behind them and get off to a winning start in 2020.

The last game of the week and the margin game is the Fremantle derby with South Fremantle to lock horns with East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. This game has been talked about for the past couple of weeks with both clubs angling for a derby in round one. The WAFL obliged, scheduling the rivals against each other in a big derby for round one in the hope of attracting a bumper crowd. The Bulldogs are hoping to get 10,000 through the gate on Saturday to start the season which would be a phenomenal crowd and a big boost for both clubs and the WAFL itself. On the field, Souths will be out to turn around their fortunes from last season which ended in a huge Grand Final defeat against Subiaco, something which will have left a sour taste in their mouth as we know they are a quality football side. The Sharks improved in 2019 with five wins and will no doubt be looking to knock off their long-time rivals on their home deck in the opening round of the season. As mentioned, this game is the margin match for this week and will also be telecast on Channel Seven from 2:30pm. Bouncedown is at 2:30pm so I imagine the telecast will begin a little earlier to accommodate this.

In the other grades, the Reserves matches (remember there is no Peel Thunder vs Perth fixture as Peel have withdrawn their side for this season) begin at 12pm while the Colts fixtures get underway at 9:30am except for the Peel Thunder vs Perth game which is a twilight match starting at 4:30pm.

The weather could be a bit wet on Saturday with a shower or two across the morning and afternoon and 18 degrees expected. At this stage about 1-3mm is predicted with a 60% chance of rain forecast at this stage.

Well, it's been a long time coming but WAFL footy is back for 2020, I personally am looking forward to this week's fixtures and I'm sure there are many others who are happy to have the WAFL back too. I hope everyone has stayed safe during these crazy times and please continue to look after each other as we navigate our way through this pandemic. Happy tipping!!

Oh and your line about South hoping to get 10k through the gates is a bit off. They are only letting 6k in.

The original plan was that South Fremantle were hoping to get 10k to the game as the WA government was to begin phase five restrictions on Saturday, 18 July. That meant that there would be no restrictions on crowd limits, the two square metre per person rule removed and patrons would no longer need to adhere to social distancing which would allow for a bigger crowd into the venue to watch the game.

However, with the COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria, entry into phase five was put on hold which meant Fremantle Oval could no longer accommodate a crowd of 10k as the venue is only able to operate at 50% capacity as per current guidelines, hence why the maximum crowd is now 6k.
