Tipping Ladder after Round One
Round One has been run and won, it was great to have the WAFL back in its purest form with 20 minutes quarters and five games per round over the Easter long weekend in what produced some fairly entertaining games. The top tipsters this week were Falconista and Hotdees who tipped the card for Round One, an impressive effort in the first round of the season. RickSanchez picked up the bonus point this week to also finish the round with a total of five points.
After the opening round, Falconista, Hotdees and RickSanchez are all tied for the lead on five points.
Round Two Fixtures
East Fremantle vs Subiaco at New Choice Homes Park (2:10pm, margin)
East Perth vs Peel Thunder at Leederville Oval (2:10pm)
Claremont vs South Fremantle at Revo Fitness Stadium (2:10pm)
West Perth vs West Coast Eagles at Splendid Park, Yanchep (2:10pm)
Perth vs Swan Districts at Mineral Resources Park (5:10pm)
Round Two takes place on Saturday this week with four afternoon games and one twilight game. East Perth meets Peel Thunder in the first of the afternoon games for the round at Leederville Oval. The Royals had a bright start against Subiaco on Good Friday but were eventually worn down by the Lions in what was a 28 point defeat having led by 23 points in the latter part of the first quarter so the Royals will out to reverse their fortunes in round two. Peel Thunder suffered what was a shock defeat to East Fremantle in Mandurah also on Good Friday and perhaps should have lost by a lot more if it weren't for the Sharks' inaccuracy in front of goal. Both these sides have some history with the Royals being the Eagles' former alignment club so there should be some spice to this one on Saturday.
Next up sees Claremont host South Fremantle in a Grand Final rematch at Revo Fitness Stadium. Claremont had somewhat of a sluggish start against Swan Districts in Round One, trailing by 23 points at quarter time before booting eight goals in the second term to roar back into the contest. From there, the Tigers did enough to keep Swans at bay in the second half to notch up a round one win. South Fremantle spent most of last week neck and neck with West Perth in what was an enthralling contest before the Bulldogs managed to assert their dominance on the contest in the last quarter to run out 21 point winners and start their premiership defence in the best possible way. With this match being a replay of last year's Grand Final, both teams will be out to prove a point, particularly the Tigers who will be looking for some early revenge in Season 2021.
West Perth takes on West Coast Eagles in another Saturday afternoon game with the Falcons travelling up to Splendid Park in Yanchep to host the Eagles. The Falcons played out a great game with South Fremantle last week which was a very tight contest until three quarter time. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Bulldogs kicked five goals to two in the last term to come away with the win consigning West Perth to starting the 2021 season with a loss. West Coast Eagles fared much the same in round one, competing strongly against Perth for the first three quarters of the game before falling short against the Demons in the last term. West Perth is taking the game up to Yanchep which is a suburb in the far northern suburbs of Perth to showcase the wares of Australian football in the far northern suburbs, a fast developing area of the city. If you're keen to see the game, entry is free on the day and there'll be plenty of activities for the kids if you have some in tow.
The twilight match this week has Perth hosting Swan Districts at Mineral Resources Park. Perth had a win first up against the West Coast Eagles in Round One, eventually kicking away somewhat in the final term to register an important early win. Swan Districts started very well against Claremont last week but fell away in the second term before some accurate goalkicking (18.1) kept them in the contest until late in the final term. This game looks set to be a twilight cracker on Saturday evening with both sides looking evenly matched.
Unfortunately there is no TV game this week so I have selected the East Fremantle vs Subiaco match as the margin match this week with both clubs occupying first and second spot on the ladder after the opening round. East Fremantle were impressive against Peel Thunder in Round One, bursting out to a 20 point lead at quarter time only for the Thunder to reel them in again during the second term. The Sharks pulled away from the Thunder after half time again though and posted a comfortable 33 point victory to start the season in style. Subiaco didn't start too well against East Perth last week, trailing by 23 points late in the first quarter before the Lions began to gradually claw their way back against the Royals and eventually run out 28 point winners on Good Friday. This game is shaping up to be a good one with East Fremantle boasting some strong recruits this season while the Lions also looked strong during Round One in what will be a battle of two undefeated sides on Saturday afternoon.
There's a bit of a mixed bag in the Reserves and Colts this week. All Reserves games are set to commence at 11:40am with the exception of the Perth vs Swan Districts match which has a start time of 2:40pm. In the Colts, East Fremantle host Subiaco at 9:10am while Perth take on Swan Districts at 12:10pm while East Perth will host Peel Thunder at 1:30pm down at Gloucester Oval in Margaret River, all those games take place on Saturday. On Sunday, Claremont face off against South Fremantle at 10:45am.
The weather this week is looking good, partly cloudy and 29 degrees with easterly winds set to dominate the day in what is shaping up to be perfect for football.
It's great to be back into the swing of things in terms of the WAFL in what is more of a traditional season this year in what is becoming the "new normal" in this COVID-19 impacted world. Thankfully we're in a fortunate position to play a full season this year and it was good to see some great crowds at the games across the Easter long weekend. Happy tipping!!
