Round 16 saw some pretty good scores again amongst the tipping group with no-one scoring lower than three. The top tipster this week was hansie who tipped the card and was the only person to do so while Freezin collected the bonus point with his margin of 22 points closest to Subiaco's winning margin of 44 points to also give himself a score of five for the week.

With 16 rounds completed, there hasn't been much change at the top with samFFC, Falconista and getgaff all tied for the lead on 50 points. Miguel Sanchez joins gaskin for a share of fourth place on 47 points.

Round 17 Fixtures

East Fremantle vs Swan Districts at New Choice Homes Park (Saturday, 2:10pm)
Subiaco vs West Perth at Leederville Oval (Saturday 2:10pm, margin)
Peel Thunder vs South Fremantle at David Grays Arena (Saturday, 2:10pm)
Perth vs West Coast Eagles at Mineral Resources Park (Saturday, 2:10pm)
East Perth vs Claremont at Leederville Oval (Sunday, 2:10pm)

Round 17 is approaching with five games this week, the round again split with four games on Saturday and one on Sunday. The first game of the round has East Fremantle hosting Swan Districts at New Choice Homes Park. East Fremantle faced Claremont last week and stuck with the Tigers two quarters before faltering in the second half to fall to a 43 point defeat as injuries taking their toll on the Sharks this season. To have any chance at making finals, the Sharks simply have to win this week and face Swan Districts who sit comfortably in fifth with an 8-5 record having beaten Perth in their last start. This match will be pivotal for a number of club's finals chances, a Swans' win would end East Fremantle's season and likely also consign the other three chasing sides to missing finals as well so this match is a pretty big one in a number of ways here.

Peel Thunder face South Fremantle at David Grays Arena in Mandurah in the next fixture of Round 17. Peel Thunder didn't start well against West Perth last week with things progressively deteriorating from there as the Falcons kicked 12 goals to four in the opening three terms to open up a sizable lead. To their credit, the Thunder fought back with four final quarter goals and kept the Falcons to just one behind to add some respectability to the scoreboard at the final siren. South Fremantle took on Subiaco last week and stayed with the Lions for a half before their opponents took control, kicking 6.7 to 1.3 in the second half to hand the Bulldogs a 44 point loss. That defeat saw Souths fall to fourth on the ladder having been overtaken by West Perth and a win over Peel Thunder here could possibly help them rise up the ladder with the top four bunched up quite closely.

The next game on Saturday has Perth taking on West Coast Eagles at Mineral Resources Park in Lathlain. Perth endured a slow start against Swan Districts, finding themselves 20 points down at quarter time before spending the rest of the game trying to play catch-up football against Swans which proved unsuccessful in the end. The final margin however was 24 points with the Demons mostly breaking even after the first change in what were some encouraging signs from the Dees. West Coast Eagles grabbed their third win of the season, knocking off East Perth last week in what proved to be a thrilling contest. The Eagles were the better side for three terms, leading by 38 points at three quarter time in what was a strong performance only for the Royals to kick 5.6 to 0.0 in quick time before the Eagles held on to win in a nailbiting contest by two points. Victory for the Demons here could see them jump to sixth place while an Eagles' win may see them rise from the bottom of the ladder if they can beat the Demons by enough on Saturday.

On Sunday, East Perth take on Claremont at Leederville Oval in a standalone fixture which is the last game of the round. East Perth faced West Coast Eagles last week and were outplayed for most of the game, finding themselves down by 38 points at three quarter time on Saturday. That brought the Royals to life though as they kicked 5.6 to 0.0 in just over 22 minutes, narrowing the margin to just two points heading into the last few minutes of the final term. The Royals had some chances late to win but couldn't convert and in the end fell to a two point defeat. After two straight losses, Claremont hosted East Fremantle last week and found the Sharks up for the fight in the first half, holding a six point lead over Old Easts at half time. From there though, the Tigers took control, booting nine goals to four in the second half to rack up a 43 pointwin. This match looks as if it could be a good game with the Royals having taken it up to the best sides this season while Claremont will be looking to recapture some of their form from earlier in the year.

Our margin match is on Saturday this week and is arguably the game of the round with Subiaco battling West Perth at Leederville Oval. Subiaco took on South Fremantle on Sunday last week and had a reasonable start to the game, taking a 10 point lead into half time before pulling away from the Bulldogs, kicking six goals to one in the second half to post a comfortable 44 point win. The Lions face a West Perth side in very good form having won their last six matches with last week's win over Peel Thunder seeing the Falcons push up into third spot on the ladder. The last time these two teams met, Subiaco won a thrilling game by two points in what proved to be a see-sawing battle and I expect another great contest between these two clubs on Saturday afternoon.

It's fairly straightforward scheduling in the Reserves and Colts this week. All Reserves' match begin at 11:40am while all Colts' match start at 9:10am.

As has been the case for the last few weeks, showers are expected over the weekend. Saturday may see a storm early in the day along with showers and possible hail culminating with a maximum of 16 degrees. Sunday will see showers easing with a maximum of 17 degrees.

Some big games on Saturday this week which will prove pivotal in the finals race but also for those clubs inside the top five at the moment with a couple of teams playing each other on the weekend. Hopefully the weather will keep away enough for some good footy across the weekend. Happy tipping!!

Round 17 proved to be tougher this week than in the previous few rounds with a couple of upsets playing havoc with the tipping group on the weekend. A score of three was a pretty decent result while andana picked up four to be the top tipster this week. The bonus point for the margin in Round 17 was claimed by getgaff who was spot on with his prediction of 20 points which also handed him a total of four for the round.

After 17 rounds, that extra point scored by getgaff puts him into the outright lead on 54 points with Falconista and samFFC tied for second on 53 points. After a score of three this week, Miguel Sanchez moves into outright fourth place on 50 points.

Round 18 Fixtures

Claremont vs Subiaco at Revo Fitness Stadium (2:10pm, margin)
Swan Districts vs Peel Thunder at Steel Blue Oval (2:10pm)
East Perth vs Perth at Leederville Oval (2:10pm)
South Fremantle vs East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval (2:10pm)
Bye: West Coast Eagles, West Perth

For those unaware, the WAFC announced towards the end of last week that the WAFL season would be extended by two weeks to accommodate the fixture that was devised before the beginning of the season in that each team would play 18 matches with clubs playing each other twice. With two lockdowns during the season, the ability to fit this fixture in having lost two weekends was impossible so a decision was made in consultation with all WAFL clubs to add two additional rounds so that the season can be completed as originally intended.

As a result of this, the WAFL added an additional fortnight to the fixture with all clubs to serve a second bye between Rounds 18 to 22 so that each club can play 18 fixtured matches. Due to this, the 2021 WAFL season will finish on the weekend of 2/3 October and will retain the five club finals series. As a result of this, the BigFooty WAFL Tipping competition will also be extended by two weeks to take into the account the reworked fixture across the additional rounds.

Moving on to Round 18 which is the first of the redrawn rounds to finish the season, this week sees four matches which will all be played on Saturday afternoon. Swan Districts face Peel Thunder at Steel Blue Oval in Bassendean in what promises to be an interesting match-up. Swans had a chance to lock up a finals berth last week but suffered a shock loss to East Fremantle with a slow start proving to be costly in the end, leaving the finals door for a couple of the teams below them ever so slightly ajar. Swans are back at home this week though and come up against Peel Thunder who copped a 116 point belting from South Fremantle on Saturday. The Thunder started slowly, finding themselves down by six goals at quarter time with things only getting worse from there as the Bulldogs increased their lead at every change to hand the Thunder a heavy defeat, something they'll be keen to atone for with a better showing against Swan Districts on Saturday.

East Perth host Perth at Leederville Oval in the next fixture of the round. East Perth claimed a stunning seven point win over Claremont on Sunday, upsetting the Tigers on the back of a five goal to two third quarter. The Tigers fought back late in the last term but fell short as the Royals earnt their fifth win of the season to keep their finals hopes in tact for another week. The Royals' opponent this week is Perth who crashed to a 56 point loss to West Coast Eagles in their most recent fixture. Perth were jumped early by the Eagles who kicked 11 goals in the first half to the Demons' three and they couldn't make up any ground from there on in. The Demons have pride to play for in 2021 now and will be looking to upset East Perth's late season run for the top five with a win here away from home in what should be an entertaining match.

The next game is the traditional Perth derby between South Fremantle and East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. Souths dominated Peel Thunder last week, thrashing the Mandurah based side by 116 points which pushed the Bulldogs into second place on the ladder, ahead of Claremont on percentage and have now won four of their last five matches. The Bulldogs face their bitter rival in East Fremantle who scored an upset win over Swan Districts last week, keeping the door ajar on a run to the finals and a win here could prise the door open even further if other results fall their way. The Fremantle derby is always intense and I expect this match will be hotly contested with both clubs having plenty to play for this week.

Unfortunately there is no TV game this week mostly due to the Olympics so our margin match for Round 18 is the game of the round between the two western suburbs rivals in Claremont and Subiaco to be played at Revo Fitness Stadium in Claremont. The Tigers had an unexpected defeat against East Perth last week in what was an even contest until half time before East Perth broke away with five goals in the third term to set up a handy 15 point lead at three quarter time. Claremont fought back late in the last term but left themselves with a bit too much to do and lost by seven points in the end. Subiaco faced West Perth last week and burst out of the blocks, kicking 4.9 to 0.0 until West Perth kicked their first score partway through the second term. From there, the match was a real arm wrestle as the Falcons slowly worked their way into the contest but found themselves playing catch-up footy and Subiaco managed to register a 20 point win. Both Claremont and Subiaco have played some great football this season and this clash should prove to be another great contest between the two clubs on Saturday afternoon.

It's another straightforward week in the Colts and Reserves in Round 18. All Reserves' matches begin at 11:40am while the Colts' fixtures start at 9:10am.

This week has been better weather wise although it's set to take a turn on the weekend. Showers are expected on Saturday with a maximum of 18 degrees, it looks like they'll be around for a good portion of the day but only 3-6mm are forecast at this stage so hopefully there will be some fine breaks around.

Five rounds to go now and who could complain about a longer season? This week has quite a few intriguing games which will be another step towards shaping this year's top five. Plenty to play for this week as we head into the business end of the season. Happy tipping!!
