He was good in the first half but absolutely fell to pieces in the second, not sure what went on there???
Hutchings, always been a fan. Was great to see him go at it today.
Strijk was very good.
Rodda was also very good, worth a look at a rookie spot, I reckon. Swinging him forward Billy has added extra strings to his bow. :thumbsu:

Rodda's endeavour was great - and it was important in a wet WAFL grand final

But his kicking is poor and he isn't over mobile

Not a patch on McGovern for mine

So read through a few posts throughout the game saying Morton was hitting a few packs...

Bugger me dead, that should be a no brainer, not something that should be lauded.

He swanned around all day playing loose on the green grass and had zero impact.

Even if his role is loose man, he doesn't cut off any forward thrusts by positioning well.

And he absolutely shit himself* under a high ball in the second quarter.

The guy is weak as piss and not AFL standard

Honestly my falcons showed the hard commitment at the ball that should be expected and he was well short of that

* I would to, but I'm not posing as a professional footballer.

A high standard game for three quarters but West Perth with the fresher legs ran over the top in the last. As good as it was to see Cameron Grover get a game as well (his a work colleague) the Royals definately missed Fred Clutterbuck's run

Johnson and Lycett owned Kuenen and Rodda at the hit outs but East Perth couldn't manufacture that dominance into centre clearances where i presume the West Perth midfielders just tried to shark Johnson and Lycett or put intense pressure on East Perth's mids

As I said already after the prelim final East Perth really had nothing to lose going into the game and everything to gain. Only really cemented a finals spot late in the season, than beating Swans at Bassendean in a Eliminator and smashing Claremont at Claremont in a Prelim they exceeded there own expectations i'd say, largely due to the work of the Eagles players in the finals

Well done to Billy Monaghan and his coaching staff, Jason Salecic and the players except Kody Manning who i can't stand. Always nice too see Ken Judge with egg on his face as well after criticising the Falcons for giving Monaghan a new contract earlier this year

Brendan Lee arguably best for the Royals and even though Hutchings won the Simpson (well done Hutchy) I'd be interested to see how many votes Shane Nelson polled. Surely that guy needs to be rookied this year

As for the current and former West Coast players
  • Johnson was dominant in poor conditions for big men
  • Oakley Nicholls was average at best
  • Selwood tried hard to get his team over the line and wasn't there worst
  • Lycett won in the hit outs but wasn't a big enough impact forward getting 2 goals from virtually inside the square
  • Cripps was handy inside 50 but gave away that silly free kick reversal (was nothing in it and Salecic played it up big time but just stupid from Cripps) which resulted in a Falcons goal. He needs to impact more in the midfield at WAFL level in 2014.
  • Wilson didn't have the influence he should have
  • Morton was at times APPALLING and made some critical errors
Will be an interested onlooker to see how the Royals go next year with the alignment but am more so interested in Peel who haven't left a mark on WAFL seniors since there inception except for wooden spoons. They've had finals success at Colts and Reserves level IIRC and have blooded AFL players through the Colts but left no indent in the Seniors
And hopefully the Sharkies can find some local talent because they will lose at least a handful of players to the alignment

Would definitely take rodda as a rookie. I wanted him with a main draft selection. Very impressed with Hutch, good on him. Anyone got anything on the colts GF i wasn't able to go, damned children getting in the way of football.

Read up online and Claremont beat Souths by 6 points after being 13 points down at 3/4 time with a 3.3 to 0.2 last quarter. Alec Waterman named B.O.G. I can't wait to finally see some of this kid at WAFL level next year

38 hit outs for Darcy Cameron and named amongst Claremont's best with Barrass, Ben Sokol and Bailey Matera (not sure which Matera he belongs to) named in South's best

Yeh wouldn't be too fussed if we delisted Morton and Wilson (was saying how Wilson is an average tweener in another thread recently).

Agree with quite a bit of that, except I don't think Johnson dominated.

Sure he won the taps, but they were never to advantage.

Kuenen was well undersized and out muscled but he dragged the ruck contest down to a scrap which was a huge win for us. his strategy of standing of Johnson and jumping into Jim at every contest wore him down.

Add to that Johnson found little of the pill, I'd say he was well nullified

The WP onballers were much harder at the footy and hunted in packs,

EP generally scored on transition when WP were over committed and the ball spilt out. Ep then generally ran into open goal (see Lycett). It was the exact same earlier in the year at leederville, except in that game WP had lost their entire bench and couldn't run out the game. With a fit squad, the hunting in packs in the ordinary conditions was immense

Have no idea as well why Cripps wasn't playing midfield. His clearance work earlier in the year was good.

Agree, Johnson did not dominate. He had a good patch halfway through the first but only for 5-10 mins, then went AWOL, along with the rest of the team in the last. In fact, the only one who tried to stand up was Selwood.
EP scored in transition all year, that's the main way they scored, spitting out the front of the contest.
This hurts me to say this :p , but WP were much smarter than any other club in nullifying that run.

We were getting thrashed at the clearances - no idea why they didn't throw cripps in to the midfield when he's shown he can torch players with pace
I think he may have been partly injured. Was shown on TV near the end of the Claremont game with an ice-pack on his groin. Would explain why he remained in the forward pocket for the whole game.

Congrats to West Perth, too mobile and too much run for the East Perth boys. I also would be keen on Rodda and Nelson as rookies.

Rodda would be a handy Rookie but not sold on Nelson.

Nelson wins plenty of the ball and has a huge engine. Would be keen to see him after doing an AFL preseason. Football is transforming to a style that mobile teams with the most run generally win.

Isnt he a bit small though? My opinion from watching him yesterday in particular is that although he was good, he's another of those smaller framed mids that might struggle at AFL level against your Mundy's Watsons, Fyfe's & JPK's. I think we have too many small framed mids already. Happy to be advised differently if anyone has sound reasoning for him being picked up by us. :)

Endurance is relatively poor compared to many of our other mids. Obviously it will improve, but spending the first two years at a club like the Saints means he arrived with a lesser fitness base than otherwise.

Today and next Saturday will decide my belief in the almighty as no omnipotent, loving and all wise being would allow a Royals Freo double! Talk about hell on earth and the four horseman of the apocalypse.

The Garlicmunchers and Hawks to restore our faith in all things good.

Hutchings for BOG.

Now for the trifecta!

But seriously, whilst this was a great game to watch after having endured so much rubbish at Subi this year, there are some real WC concerns that emerge from this game due to the lack of presence from our listed players (apart from Hutchings).

Watched the game from two different angles (due to moving under cover) and from both, Morton simply won't cut it. He could take some real lessons on attacking the ball from the West Perth players and we could take some real lessons about taking borderline players from other clubs.

Wilson, have been a supporter but his composure was poor and he would have been giving Royal supporters heart palpatations at times. Ditto Mortons review, the WP defenders attack on the ball really stood out, Wilsons didn't.

Cripps and Lycett, did nothing more than would be expected at a minimum and it would have been nice if one or both could have really taken the game by the scruff of the neck. Cripps can be developed as his stamina improves but Lycett strikes me as a real "meh" player going forward and Sinclair offers more.

Selwood has obviously gone, but gee his ducking/sliding into tackles is a real blight of the game and tarnishes his legacy. Hope this disease doesn't keep infecting our club with his coaching role. Should take lessons from Hutchings & Rohan Kerr as to how you can attack the ball and be rewarded without resorting to dubious tactics.

Finally, how well drilled were WP in coming out of defence and their runnning in waves throught the midfield was a delight to see. Hopefully the WC heirachy was taking notes!

Yeah - was a disappointing day yesterday.

Thought Morton was as poor as poor can be. He had no feel for the game and was playing as though it was the first week of pre-season.

Hutchings was easily BOG. Whether he can translate that to dominant AFL performances is still yet to be seen.

Cripps gave away the most ridiculous free, and even if Salecic dove a little (and I'm being generous with that), there was no need whatsoever to do it. I really do hate the faux-macho bullshit which goes on in our game. Momentum killer which turned the game.

Lycett needs to do more. He has such natural ability and with his size he should dominate the WAFL. Instead he just goes about it.

Selwood - glad he retired.

Wilson - an off day. He'll have better days of it. Just picked a bugger of a day to stink it up.

I think he had been learning of Craig Wulff

People are being pretty Harsh on Lycett...I think he had a down day as his previous games for the East Perth were pretty damn good! i think people expected him to win the Simpson medal like Cox in 02 or something.

Morton had flashes of his skill but didn't get enough of the ball which was disappointing.

Wilson i think looked the worst out of the WCE boys.

Hutchings was everywhere and loved the fact he kicked 3 goals and almost had a 4th if it wasn't touched.
