Is there really any surprises here? Silvagni is filling in as the tall forward until Pav is back. Pav is expected back after the bye so Silvagni would be out. Not sure why Ross would be worried about publicity as this would seem obvious to anyone.

It's not really "within the spirit" to make a late change if there's no legit injury - so therefore Silvagni's ankle becomes "problematic" in the wet conditions so they can bring in the much-more-mobile Sutcliffe, but okay for fine conditions 24 hours later. All clubs do it, but they have to pretend that they're not; while the opposition knows what they've done, but has to pretend that they don't - otherwise they are calling them liars, which is pretty much what they are, but you can't say it cos that too is not "within the spirit".

It's classic Orwellian double-speak. ;)

I think he was never going to play Silvagni. He sent him on the plane and names him in the 22 to play games with the Crows. Then he pulled him out and added Sutty as a running type player. It paid off for Freo.

As you say Pav will be in next game and hopefully build himself to the form he showed last year.

I still don't buy it. If they really have no confidence in the ankle you do not play him in the wafl. For sure SOS may not have been 100%, but if SOS is a critical part of the team you don't make him play wafl with a risky ankle. It sounds to me like Lyon is simply managing the publicity regarding the decision as much as anything.

I disagree. The most likely thing IMO is it was Silvagni that asked to play today to test it out, Ross said it was Alex himself that did the team thing yesterday to say he wasn't confident, I'm guessing with the clubs blessing he is trying it out today to see if it can be managed without surgery. Must be a weird injury/problem.

Yeah that's about my take on it too Cat.Lyon does not concoct weird scenarios masquerading as the truth in order to fool people about what exactly. There's no reason for him to be making reference to the prospect of 'something invasive' or however he put it regarding Silver's injury.

I googled the meaning of the bolded + Alex Silvagni and it returned "career suicide"

Really? Did you pay attention when we recruited him?

Sorry Gav,you've lost me.I genuinely have zero idea what it is you are referring to or talking about.
However if you were referring to the Mighty Bulldogs filleting the tooothless Sharks this arvo the answer is yes I certainly did pay attention to that.Hasleby's a genius and we're on a ladder climbing roll.:confused:o_Oo_O:rainbow::rainbow:

Gav is referring to how Lyon signed with Freo.

He is. And Gav is not criticising him. Gav is simply recognising that Lyon has a very clear focus on winning. I would be stunned if the occasional ducks and rakes was not part of how he goes about things. And to be honest if he thought Silvagni was not the best selection for the weekend for whatever reason he managed to do it without telling the world he was dropped.

Peel play Sharks at East Freo next weekend. Should be a number of freo listed players on the park ( Sheridan, Moller, Crichton, Michie, Forster, Taberner, Faulks, Smith, Duffy, Simpson and maybe Howson will crack a game in the firsts).

Who is heading down?

Baffling, still have no idea what he's referring to.

Lyon had all but signed a contract extension with the Saints which was to be announced at an imminent press conference, from memory. They certainly believed they had their man.

In the meantime, and without his contracted agent (who he thought had a conflict of interest as he was Mark Harvey's agent too) he negotiated directly with Fremantle on his current contract.

It was all about as clandestine as you can get with more than a peppering of deception going on.

I followed the entire story, after the saga, as much as anybody else did and that isn't how I recall it.
Don't want to debate it anymore but you have a different interpretation to me, of what actually transpired.

Well you are the one posting the "please explain" when my post is simply responding to scon's post and Lyon's ability to "concoct". He has demonstrated the ability in my opinion with no doubt at all. And again, that is no criticism. Good coaches need some rat cunning.

No dramas Gav;there's Jack Poo wrong with Silver's ankle.
Thanks for the insight.

Maintaining confidentiality in contract negotiations does not equate to acting in a "clandestine" and "deceptive" manner. In every sports management contract there is an implied term that the manager is appointed as the sole manager EXCEPT where a conflict of interest arises which the client considers disabling.

Lyon's agent, ESP, knew this. They have to work within the framework of the law. What they failed to do was account for the risk that Fremantle would be the ones to swoop. Had they factored in that risk, they would have known that Ross COULD NOT disclose such an approach because ESP could not protect Ross's confidences without betraying Harvey's trust, and they could not keep Harvey's trust without breaching Ross's confidence. Breach of confidence and breach of trust are very serious offences.

Ross acted in good faith. He had no choice but to exclude ESP from the Freo negotiation. Craig Kelly (of ESP) was himself quite up front about this in an interview with the WA media in which he was very sympathetic and understanding of Lyon's position.

Scon put it best when he said that "Lyon does not concoct weird scenarios masquerading as the truth in order to fool people". Not about this. Not about Silvagni.

Clandestine may refer to:
  • Secrecy, the practice of hiding information from certain individuals or groups, perhaps while sharing it with other individuals
I think clandestine is an acceptable description.
Re Silvagni, didn't Lyon imply that he may have been looking at major surgery? The reality is that if we can get Adelaide to play an extra tall when the game is going to suit smalls, then why wouldn't you?

I imagine the surgery part is actually true, its just not what kept him out of the game and that he was effectively dropped. You have to do white lies like that or its a fine. Stupid really, what other major professional sport are you not allowed to make changes in for any reason you wish up until, What? Half an hour before the game?
