WAFL Zoning (and Expansion)

Let me get this straight or not - You are saying Subiaco WAFL Club to move up north to lets say Yanchep area to provide a future base for a third AFL Club.
Perhaps West Perth WAFL Club based in Joondalup with good facilities may want a say in that in the future. They are currently holding the fort so as to speak up there for our game.
The game has to expand and grow into new areas -That is a must. WA/Perth is likely to be hit with heaps of new migrants- Hopefully Skilled up- according to our very autocratic State Govt to fill the vacancies. But where are they going to live - Likely up to the Northern suburbs provided they bring some funds with them.

WA is a big place & the WAFC effectively control where the clubs play.
The OP needs to investigate where footy is played, not just the WAFL clubs.
WA footy funnels players through junior footy across the State & this feeds into WAFL Colts that is the primary feed into the AFL draft.

A 3rd AFL club in is no reason to change WAFL zoning.

In the 1960s it was discussed that Subi move to Abbett Park in Scarborough. The club was to be renamed Subiaco Scarborough.
There is a photo of Subi playing coach Keith Slater in the proposed jumper but I cant find it to display here.
Scarborough was a growth area in the 60s. Yanchep now.

At that time Subi were the only WANFL club to not have a licenced premises as at Subi Oval that was held by the WANFL Members Club.

Does anybody have a map of the new zones? I know Perth got a sizeable new chunk of territory and it was stated that South Fremantle and East Perth had made gains but I can't find the exact information anywhere.

East Perth contemplating doing a West Perth. Moving out of Leederville Oval into new facilities in the northern outer suburbs where all the young families can buy homes.

It’s going to be a long time for the area around the new Malaga Station to be built into a town centre. I think it would be better relocating to the existing town centres of Morley or Mirrabooka, which are also a bit closer to the bulk of the existing population within their catchment area.

East Perth look to relocate facilities to Whiteman Park as part of $40m development

East Perth are investigating a potential move of their facilities into the heart of their fastest growing zone.

Royals chief executive Dean Turner confirmed to The West Australian the club had begun looking at building a facility estimated to cost $40m at Whiteman Park by 2025.

East Perth would still play their games at Leederville Oval for the foreseeable future, but Turner would not rule out relocating matches there as well if the initial move went well.

The club has until late this year to get the plan off the ground, with their lease with the City of Vincent up at the end of next year and a 10-year extension option on the table, which they need to let them know by October if they are taking up.

Turner said the expansion of the WAFLW programs of both East Perth and Subiaco in recent years meant up to 10 teams were trying to use Leederville Oval weekly to train on as well as play games which was unsustainable.
East Perth chief executive Dean Turner has revealed they will look to build new facilities at Whiteman Park.

A move to Whiteman Park would put the club’s facilities on the new train line and in the middle of one of the biggest population growth areas in metropolitan Perth, which East Perth oversee as part of their allocated zone.

“Long term it can offer a lot in the sense that you’re going to get growth and the young kids,” Turner said.

“It will sit right on the train line so people can get to and from and they believe that the Malaga train station will be one of the busiest in WA.

“We think it (the area) has got huge potential for a lot of houses to go in there and hopefully young players that we can develop.”

Turner said the club had worked on the proposal with the Department of Sport and Culture but nothing had progressed for about four months.

“We have had meetings with David Templeman and Rita Saffioti to try to see if there’s anything that the State Government can help or try to move forward. But we’ve had no response come back,” he said.

It comes as the WAFC engage the nine clubs as well as West Coast and Fremantle to ensure the sustainability of the competition amidst financial and attendance woes.

The commission and clubs will spend the next few months formulating a strategy that they plan to reveal in the final months of the year.

With the club structure basically set for Perth 100 years ago, its no wonder it has no geographic relevance in the 2020s, no different to the Melbourne AFL clubs.

FWIW Subi looked at amalgamating with Scarborough in the early 60s & developing Abbett Park a few streets back from the beach. There is a photo of then Subi coach (early 60s) in a Subiaco Scarboro mock up jumper.

At that time Subi were the only club without a licenced premises (a bar) as the licence at Subi Oval was held by the WANFL Members Club.

Better off going further up the line to Brabham, and making the new ova part of the community facilities. Really integrating it into what's still a fairly new suburb.

But kudos to them for being proactive about it.
