Waite Vs Ryder

ye gods, I can't believe anyone would pick Waite over Ryder if they had the choice

If I was picking one to play at Hawthorn right now for the rest of the season (which is what the question asks) I would take waite in a heartbeat. If I was picking one to play at the Hawks for the rest of his career it would be Ryder. There is no doubt that Ryder will eventually be a better player but at the moment, waite can do 2 things Ryder can't -

  1. Play forward
  2. Play on the likes of Jonothan Brown, Pavlich, Franklin.

This poll shows how stupid a lot of Carlton supporters are. Ryder has been nothing but impressive since debuting... Waite, while playing well now, overall his 7-8 year career has been a disappointment.

If the clubs were reversed, Ryder was at Carlton and Waite at Essendon you'd all be raving about Ryder and saying how ordinary Waite has been. Goes to show that footy jumpers are the major cause of blindness in Australia.

Wrong.

Ryder has kicked goals this year while being switched forward and can play forward very well. He has also drifted forward and kicked goals while playing as a defender.

He has played on Franklin last year, keeping him to 4 goals 1 of which was kicked straight to Franklin from Johns in a misskick.

What are you talking about? Ryder has kicked 1 goal this year for a total of 6 over his career. Waite has kicked 100 including 13 games where he has kicked 3+. Ryder may move forward over his career and be brilliant but right now he has not been any better than Waite as a defender but Waite clearly has him beaten as a forward.

You are right about his goal kicking this year, i thought he kicked one last week against the dogs while drifting forward but he missed.
He did kick 1 against carlton while being moved forward.

I didn't dispute who was better atm, but that Ryder hasn't played on Franklin, which you conveniently forgot too mention.

He did play on him last year and held him to 7 scoring shots. I wasn't saying that he doesn't play on Brown, Pavlich, Franklin, rather that he can't. At the moment he is not strong enough. I have seen Waite considerably beat both Franklin and Pavlich.

Ryder hasnt been given the opportunity to do that yet but he will in time. Also worth mentioning he can shut down a Robert Murphy for 4 quarters, something Waite could not do, not as effectively anyway.

Ryder is clearly better and has only been in the AFL a couple of years. He will eventually be one of the best defenders in the AFL.

Waite. Simply because he can play forward or back so he would be much more valuable to a coach. Ryder looks good for the future of the Essendon backline though.

Ryder just as valuable to bombers playing a key role in defence - just as Fletcher has been so important for bombers over more than a decade so will Ryder. He can play forward as shown tonight v Saints. Went forward & kicked a goal. Can play in the ruck. Fantastic closing speed and has plenty of time - sign of a good player. This poll will seem silly in 5 years time with Ryder being in elite category.

Paddy again proved why he is better than every young defender in the comp tonight. Actually stuff that, better than every young player in the comp.
