Waite Chb - Thornton loose forward.

Swap 'em around.

And a Herbal Tea for All.

Agreed. Although Thornton was good down back tonight, prefer him up forward. Kicks straighter than Waite in set shots too.

Waite can take awesome contested grabs down back and hurt teams going the other way.

Makes perfect sense to me, obviously not to those at the club though. So I'm sure I've missed something. :p

I thought the general consensus around here was that Hampson had CHB locked in

Disappointed to find this thread as the main topic of discussion after a great win. Hardly worth a 'roast'.

The guy had a bad day in insane conditions but still put plenty of pressure on.

Presents with passion every week. Just wasn't his day. Leave him alone.

Where's the thread on Walker's 6?

I'm def not saying drop him, he's a very valuable member to our team, and can do some amazing things when on, but when will he ever drop the undisciplined acts? They are just so costly, it helps that we're winning that he doesn't get too much criticism. How often does he try and take on a tackle and gets caught trying to break it? His tackling is too crude on most occasions. It's just so frustrating, I'm certainly not roasting him in manner where I'm calling for his head, but he's so dumb, dumb, dumb.

His contested marking has always been pretty strong, but it's once the ball goes to ground where he lets himself down, I just hope he does better to cut it out of his game because if he does we will be so much better for it

Had a shocker, but nothing to see here. He'll come back better this week i'm sure.

My one gripe about Waitey though, is this part bolded above. On what seems to be a weekly occurrence, he'll be tackled with his arms free, but refuse to give the handball off to a waiting player. He'll keep holding onto the ball till the last second then he drops it trying to do a dinky little kick thing that invariably doesn't work and he gets pinged holding the ball. I really can't work out why this happens so often, and is infuriating. Your arms are free, HANDBALL the damn thing of first time.

This thread could just as easily be about O'hAiplin, Walker, Garlett or Betts next week.

X-factor brings the great, and at times the mundane with it.
For what it is worth Waite wasn't that bad last night anyway.

Agreed.

Underlying Waite's good and bad performances is effort. His workrate has been fantastic this year.

Roll with the punches (and elbows) people, no need for the roast.

So I think we're mostly in violent agreement that Waitey doesn't deserve to be singled out and roasted for yesterday's performance... BUT... that there is a valid point in here.

He sometimes really fails to play the percentages, and certainly lacks the poise of a "champion". He tries his absolute guts out, which is a positive, but I think the OP quote from Healy was pretty accurate - he tries a bit TOO hard to impose himself. Sometimes just taking the first option/doing his bit is enough and would make him a better player than trying to do something extraordinary and "almost" doing it.

At his age and stage, you would think Waite is what Waite will always be. That said, he's fighting one-out and out of his weight division as lone (competent) key forward, so he might get that extra 5% of space or time when Kreuzer or Hendo are sharing the load with him.

Good player, not a great player. But he probably has the physical talent, just not the temperament/decision making to be great.

I think Hendo will make a huge difference to Waitey's game. Hendo, when he's up and running, does that lead up work very well and will really give Jarrad a chop out.

I know I've been promoting Hendo up here pretty hard and that is largely so as Hendo is a very smart, instinctive footballer.
One that is happy to make space for others, put his body on the line and work for the betterment of the whole.

Admittedly we shouldn't expect the world from a 21 year old just yet, but upon watching him, you just know what he to be capable of, in the not too distant future.

Indeed CHF is not Waites go. If he leads he tends to lead toward the boundary or pockets. Not sure I can recall him demanding the ball in a more central position. Waites other problem is that he constantly loses his feet in contested situations, its very annoying and not really good enough for someone with his experience and talent. The fact he has also gives away many free kicks due to stupidity makes you wonder when we will see the the talented, smart and game breaking Waite. IMO we have only seen patches of this from Waite this year.....

I think people very quickly forget, due to his experience in total games......that Waite is in his SECOND year as a full time forward. He is still learning how to play those roles, and getting confidence in his own game.

Yes, he is undisciplined at times, but he has tempered this this year. He was looking to hit someone in the Saints game as things weren't going his way.....but several times I saw he clearly checked himself, and in years gone by where he would have hit someone, he reigned it in.

Was good against the Dees and Cats. Presented well vs Saints prior to that and got rubbish deleivery for most of the night.

Interestingly though, I heard this tossed up last night on SEN.

Waite to CHB (were IMHO he has played his best footy).
Hendo to CHF
Kreuzer in for Hampson.
Thornton out and Laidler or Bower (if he ever gets fit) to take his place.

What really annoys me is the fact that when a KPF marks the ball 45-50 meters out, u expect them to go back and have a shot...

But not Waite, he doesnt have the consistent depth in his kicking. can pump the odd 1 50-60 but generally has to pass it off and it shits me no end.

He has, but he's also reckless with his aggression. He's not getting reported at the very least, but he has a tendency to give away clumsy free kicks.

I love him for that aggression but the balance is not quite right at times.

Quite often will blindly throw his elbows back into the face/neck of the OP long after he has been tackled and brought to ground. Really needs to watch himself...

Again, I want people on here to understand I'm not roasting Waite's game or performances this year, I'm roasting his recklessness and poor discipline which undoes a lot of his work.

Waite had a shocker... so what.

Betts has been having shockers for most of the season so far... is way down on his goals for the year and while we had a bit of a whinge about it earlier on in the season, things seem to have died down on that front.

Waite will come good, or he will be dropped to the Ants to freshen up and find some form... we have the depth now to do that and not miss a beat.

Tear my hair out watching Waite play. For one so talented and so important to Carlton, he continually makes fundamental 'schoolboy' errors. They will be part of his package for good I'm afraid. Exhilarating, yet infuriating footballer.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :thumbsu:

I think Waitey's a lot better in terms of discipline this year than he has in the past. Has basically carried the full load of tall forward responsibilities this year with next to no help. (hampson struggled early in the year, Henderson came in way underdone but looks just about ready to go, and Setanta hasn't been scintillating) His contested marking is outstanding but as a lot of people have suggested he just needs to be a little more composed around the 50 and in contests. He's been super important for us this year and I think it would have a massive negative impact on the team if he were to go down with injury or (finger crossed) another suspension.....
