Its threads like this where the ill-informed rednecks show their real colours.

Some people just can't stand the idea of an educated, refined Muslim media personality giving a moderate voice of reason to the public, doesn't suit the redneck/right-wing narrative of all Muslims being evil/spawn of ISIS etc.
I dont think its redneck to say Ally was chosen for the Project because of his ethnicity. Of course he was. To give a viewpoint from a different background. And be a representative.
Like Carrie was chosen to be a certain demographic representative. Like Pickering was.
Its a moot point anyway cos its all so homogenised. You think Ally gets free rein to say whatever he wants? Dont think so.
Its costume.
And that is not deriding Ally. At all. He is obviously an intelligent fella.
But you learn more about him by reading what he has written and not what he is constrained to say on TV.

White people like to pretend they'd like a white person espousing those opinions just as much. Not 100% true. People just love the idea of a Muslim not being a 'typical Muslim' – more than the inference that I don't like a Muslim who's intelligent. People rate the guy higher because they feel they owe it to him/muslims/white guilt because they feel like "jee well there are good ones out there!"

Aly is a knob. Fair enough he's relatively intelligent but is he really that smart? Not really.

Also how come Pickering is still derided as an arse but Aly is seen as, well, refer to post above.

Pickering has had enough of pushing a right wing agenda. Aly is a paid stooge. Who can ever forget when he blamed labor for the carbon tax being repealed. Or all the other times he was paid to criticize shorten for abbotts bullshit

Firstly: I think a hundred thousand first years and year 12s have muttered the same naive nonsense in the past week.

12 months ago that was you, or have you come out of character?

His diatribe about negative gearing on the Project was the final straw for me. Basically cherry-picked the only economist who was against it and did 0 research into what other countries call negative gearing.

A quick look would see that they called it a tax deduction on their investment and negative gearing means something else (which is that your investment after the tax deduction is lower than the interest that you are paying which is what it commonly means).

Regarding property, he failed to mention that only two countries in the world do not have a tax deduction on interest for loans on investment properties which are the UK and the Netherlands. All other countries have tax deduction on interest of loans for investment properties.

In fact, in the US, you can claim the interest on your mortgage on your own house as a tax deduction, you can't do it here.

Bolt destroys him time and time again, that is saying something.
Bolt continues to ride Aly. Aly doesn't help himself with the self-styled patriots comment on the Boston Marathon bombings. Bolt went to town on him for that double standard.

Pickering is a tentacle from the same octopus, but he's at least occasionally funny.

Silent Alarm is basically our very own Waleed Aly

ILY
Silent Alarm is incredibly cynical and untrusting of people. I doubt he is a Waleed.

The first one who made it about him being Muslim in this thread was you; not anyone else.

I listen to his opinions. I honestly couldn't care if he's Muslim or not, beyond of course if he's articulating, for example, his interpretation and views on what being a Muslim in today's society is.

I also continue to get the sense that people are mostly judging him on his commercial entertainment guise (Project etc.), based on the lack of discussion about his articles or his book. My attitude would be that you're almost never going to get the best of someone in that commercial guise.

These people think they're the beacon of provocation and originality, but they forget they're as white bred as Coldplay and Adele.

LOL

Seriously though I kinda agree with much of what you've said.

But there's a lot of hate for him I really don't get, seems to be The Project effect, has anybody ever gone on that show and looked like anything other than a twat? It's just cringeworthy.

Waleed is ok I guess. His quarterly review a few years back was pretty good, even if I didn't agree with a lot of it. He does have a brain.

Lol what? Both are very leftist. The Project is very left wing, not sure why Prickering couldn't push his agenda on there

Funnily we ask the same questions about you

ITT: People admitting they watch The Project. :$
I got shared that negative gearing segment and asking if it was true or not lol.

I don't like him.

He is a very intelligent man, only a fool would deny that. To become a successful lawyer you have to be articulate, quick witted and cunning. He is all of these things. Like a lot of lawyers, he hates being contradicted and is good at discrediting arguments that he does not agree with. However, it plain as day that he has an agenda. What that agenda is, I can only speculate, but I do not believe that it is for the greater good of Australian society. His agenda, I believe, is for the greater good of Waleed Aly. Then you need to ask yourself: What is for the greater good of Waleed? Let's have a look at what motivates him.

His main motivator is his religion. This cannot be denied. Any practicing Muslim is primarily motivated by their beliefs, as is any practicing Hindu etc. The guy is the head of public affairs for the Islamic Council of Victoria. This basically means that his job is to sanitize the image of and protect his religion. So now this has been identified, what techniques does he employ to further and protect his religion? The most obvious example I have seen is his little "inspirational speech" on ISIL. You have to give points to the guy, he's cunning. But if you are shrewd enough to look beyond the face value of his Kumbaya speech, you will see that he is very much protecting Islam. It's a cleverly disguised way of shielding it from criticism. What better way to do it than to say that by criticizing Islam you are helping ISIL? Read between the lines people.

A second point that I feel should be raised is the concept of Taqiyya in Islam. This permits Muslims to lie in order to protect their religion. Look it up if you don't believe me. I firmly believe that Waleed lies to protect his religion. Why wouldn't he? It's his number one goal. By shouting down anyone who criticizes Islam and pretending to support the liberal left, he is doing a sterling job of it. If anyone here actually believes he truly condemns what is happening, they need to think again. Remember, his religion PERMITS him to lie if he feels threatened. If you think that he supports liberalism and gay marriage, you are an idiot.

When a person's religion permits them to lie in order to protect it, their words need to be taken with a grain of salt. Call me a bigot, call me what you want.

I'm just not easily sucked in by poorly researched and agenda driven four minute fluff-pieces.
