The loss to Sydney has genuinely killed what ever miniscule chance of finals we had. With that comes the need to plan for next season.

With just 9 games left for the season, big decisions need to occur now which means the coaching staff have to put their big boy pants on and start having the man conversations with their senior players.

Walker - There is literally nothing to be gained from walker playing another game. He is probably 3rd or 4th on the all time player list and the most loved player of the modern era for our club and will be sorely missed. But he can't help the list now. Trying to play in another year does not help us. We need to tinker with the forward line for a post Walker era now. Not in another seasons time. I would actually make St Kilda in Round 18 a farewell game if he wants, but he isn't playing an AFL game before that date. He will have to play Sanfl.

Smith - Sorry times up. The club needs the playing spot. Ryan and Curtin need games and well, you are not it. the games gone past. I wouldn't offer him a farewell game either, maybe just a motorcade around the ground prior to our next home game or the final game of the year.

Not sure where everyone sits with Tex but happy for him to make his own call on if he plays on next year, but either way surely we are getting very close to an announcement either way? Only have 1 home game left in 13 days time. If he isn't playing on we should know well in advance to this.

I hope Tex makes the right call.... but even more than this, I hope the Club has the courage to encourage him to call it a day. He is, without doubt my favourite modern day player and second in my all time greats, but it is time.
I don't know what to think about him being retired. He is my 3rd fav ever and I just hate the idea of telling him it's time

He was just our best forward yesterday ?

He’s the main senior player I’d keep

I’d trade Laird and retire smith

It is time for Smith.

For Tex, maybe there is a role if we manage his body right. Should rest once a month at least (or we’ll have the choice made for us when he gets injured and can’t play anyway).

With the state of our list there are plenty to get rid of, and you can only realistically turn over so many players each season.

That should happen naturally

Tex has already adjusted his game for it to happen

Now they just need to do it , TT needs a good run at it without injury

Tex still commands the most of our entries though. Yesterday was just stupidity from the coaching group and whilst Tex kicked 3, he didn't touch the ball in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. He probably has another year in him, but it shouldn't be with us, we need to move on from the Tex and Sloane era. Laird, Crouch and Smith need to go too. We might finish near the bottom again, but so what, we've botched this rebuild anyway.

Yeah respectfully disagree

I’m retiring smith , trading Laird and keeping Tex

He’s a smart player , and is trying to play more bit part and we need the other 2 to take over , also think he will be good for Welsh re mentor as he will need mentoring

14-16 games next year depending on injuries to others

5 goals out of 30 odd I50 entries would have been a big day if he had of kicked better , kind of feel he’d prefer to pass them off from 50m this year where possible so hasn’t been kicking those , and the back injury an influence on that

Tex should have kicked 5 yesty , kicking was off

Easily our most dangerous looking forward all game

Nah, looked way off the pace. Got lucky on a couple of occasions because he didn't have the movement to make the contest. The Hawks had stopped in the last five minutes as well.

I think TV can give a false impression sometimes. He was far from our worst but it wasn't a good game.

He’s just alot smarter than most forwards so knows how to get scoring opportunities despite lacking speed these days

Tex is still several tiers a better footballer than Fog and Thilthorpe. And will be next season too.
I disagree. He would be IF his body was right, which it isnt and it wont be again. Fog is now the man, he has to be the MAN. Tex has been my favourite player for a long time but he needs to let Fog and TT take over from next season. He can play SANFL and help out coaching the forwards on game day if he wants the 1 year extension but hes well and truly done.

I don't think it's time for Tex.

One more year on next to nothing salary wise. Could win a final off his own boot if managed properly in 2025.

Just need an intelligent coach that would properly manage him.

Well you had me until “Could win a final…..”

With Nicks in charge, unlikely to happen.

I'd have Tex go round for one more.

Welsh won't be ready to play Year 1 and guys like Gollant don't look up to it, so he's not keeping an up and comer out of the team.

Whereas Smith's retention actively prevents Curtin or Ryan being selected, not to mention the option of ushering in New Pick 4 Mid at half back.

I thought Walker was absolutely gone in 2020 and then he got his body right and had a career season. I think he can still contribute next year, but he also hasn't chased down an opposition player since that tackle on Lewis Jetta at the SCG a decade ago.

If he plays on, he basically has to be camped out of the square and running in the opposite direction to TT and Fog and we should expect Murphy or McHenry to get more games to cover for his lack of defensive pressure.

There's no doubt that injury/age is impacting the power of his leg. Not making the distance from 50 is a sure sign that he's not quite right.
