On a related note though, living here in the US has given me a certain perspective...

There's clearley an illegal immigration problem; there are a lot of laborers in the major cities which has only made the poor poorer. it's pretty out in the open too; there are even haven cities where undocumented immigrants can access certain government welfare and services like education.

I certainly don't envy the illegals though; they are wide open to exploitation, and for many they have been here almost their entire life, who may as well be citizens but simply don't have documentation which makes it hard.

It seems a situation where everyone loses (except the rich of course). but there seems to be the prevailing attitude that cracking down on illegals is somehow racist. even calling them illegal immigrants is somehow racist.

It's gotten to the point now where it's virtually impossible to immigrate legally, unless you marry in or get an employer to sponsor you, which unless you are very niche, is usually prohibitively expensive. but it's so easy to immigrate illegally; you can overstay your visa and so long as you know what you are doing, you can live a decent if basic life without ever being caught. because there are 12-30 million illegals, there is a strong support network in place.

This is a problem for the US now, and will only get worse in the future, as their immigration is mainly coming in from the unskilled poor who are consuming resources without paying taxes, and are ill equipped to contribute to the larger society. Most can't even speak English.

Amnesty at this stage seems a good solution, as if these people have a pathway to legality, then they will be able to start to give back to America at the same time that they can mobilise upwards. win win. But Amnesty in itself is not enough, as they will just find themselves in the same position in 10-20 years, with none of the social or financial problems solved.

I don't know if a wall is the best option; but I have no doubt that it would help. what they have now just isn't working.

I personally think that it would be more effective if they cracked down hard on people employing illegals; probably including jail time. At the moment people can hire illegals for $40 a day with no reprocussions if caught... so why the hell shouldn't they?

I think the solution is pretty complex which requires a number of simultaneous policy positions from both sides, with a wall being the most expensive but potentially most ineffective of them. But thereally is no political capital from either the left or right for anything else, so I think the rest of America will be just willing to take what they can get.

You have made some great points. On the above. It was ever thus. Drugs. Police spend more resources targeting the end user , filling courts and jails with dross while the supply continues to come in.

The anecdotal tales of ''La Migra'' used as extortion should be turned on the householders and Immigration Police used as a term instead.
