Good Morning All,

Both myself and PATDMAN are moving to Boston, MA, USA. I have packed the Sherrin, my home and away GFC Guernsey’s and my Beanie for those snowboarding trips. The one thing I will be missing next year though is the ability to watch the games. My choices are the moment are the following:
Watch the streams off AFL.COM
Pros : 24 hours after the game is played, reasonably cheap
Cons : SH*THOUSE quality, better off listening to the game

Buying the entire season of DVDs and having the shipped over every week
Pros : DVD quality audio and video of every game
Cons : Have to wait up to a week for the games to arrive. EXPEN$IVE, very very EXPEN$IVE!

The third option is one that I like the idea of but needs the assistance of someone else back in Australia. A fellow Geelong fan like myself and Patty. Do you
a) Have foxtel digital
b) Have a PC with a TV capture card
c) Have an high speed internet connection?
d) Want to make yourself a bit of money on the side, maybe score yourself a free GFC membership for next year?

Basically PATDMAN and myself would be willing to pay for someone to record the games every week so we can download them from the persons PC or from a website to which they have posted the file. We could supply you with all software and for that matter hardware if you do not already have a TV capture card. In fact we could provide you with the software so all you need to do it have it all plugged in and it will automatically record the game each week, rip it at the desired codec/quality and all we would have to do is connect and download the file.

I will probably be buying a GFC membership this year even though I will be out of the country. So in addition to payment for the games I would be happy to have my membership sent to you for you to use.

I WILL BEG! I AM BEGGING…..I NEED MY FOOTBALL!

HELP A BROTHER OUT!

I suggest you go with the AFL broadcasts.

The quality, while not as good as TV, isn't that bad, and it does look better if you hook up your PC to the TV. Computer screens are too unforgiving. Also if you're getting someone to encode, then there will be a drop in quality anyway.

Additionally you'll get the pictures much sooner. While the link isn't on the afl site until 24 hours after the match, generally the match file is in place roughly 3 hours after it is broadcast on foxfooty (all matches are the fox footy replays). Given you're in Boston, the match will generally be available mid-morning Boston time the day after the match is played. You'll be struggling to get the match in anywhere near the time if it has to be encoded by somebody then pushed up.

I've watched matches for years this way and it's reaonably good and hassle free.

That actually sounds very incouraging.

What would you rate it as 75%, 50%?

- so you are saying that there is a directory/page on the AFL website where you can get it before hand?

- well if you can do it...

Thanks Jim Boy - I just cant bare not being able to watch games, i will be alot less homesick with footy.

75-80% is close to the mark, although it can vary a little and if anything I found the quality better overseas than here.

Errr, no, its just that Telstra don't show much imagination when naming the links to the games, they're pretty easy to guess.

75% quality doesn't sound great, but it makes a huge improvement on nothing at all. If anything I probably watched more footy while O/S.

Ah, yes, I have to remember that. The subscription fee is a little steep for a poor student ;)

Thanks guys you have all been a big help. I can probably handle 70-80% quality. As long as you can actually see hits and bumps and stuff like that I will be happy.

FOOTBALL OH YEAH YEAH!

I can save the streams and send them to you mate :) - subscription my @rse!

Ahh mad, you guys all rock!!!

That aussietorrents site looks quite interesting, and VERY handy, I hope they don't run in to any 'troubles' down the track.

Also JimBoy, what size TV were you watching the internet streams on?
I used to do this in 2002 on my cheap Teac 68cm, and it was watchable during the periods of low motion (yeah not great for footy!)...and fairly choppy whenever somebody went on a run. I'm not sure if they've improved their quality in recent times, or if you were possibly watching on a small-ish TV?

I'm pretty sure they improved it at the start of the 2003 season, I'd watch on a 58cm tv. It was quite watchable all of the time.

The principle of the torrent site is good as well. As long as enough people are contributing and seeding.

Not sure if you could even do that - but, not to worry, as I have figured out how to access them without the subby anyway. At least for now! Gonna go for the better quality now that I know about it.
