First of all, I know the "but Waite and Jammo" are out excuses will come. But with Waite more than likely playing forward next season and todays (im not going to say effort) slaughter from adelaide really shows how desperate we are for a key defender before anything else. Bower has improved immensely and Thornton is doing okay we really need a big guy up back and i for one hope it could be this guy

Wishful thinking, but we really need someone to help out our backline. can see it now, tbird - emu - goose :thumbsu:

Waite will not be playing forward when he returns next year. Waite has stated himself that he would continue to play in defence.

Realistically what we need is a greater defensive effort from our midfield to prevent the ball getting inside our defensive 50 so easily & so often. That was where we lost the game today.

Wanted - the midfield to run hard both ways and play accountable football to make life easier for our defenders.

Maguire is finished as a backman who can beat guns.

Is Maguire going to play on Franklin or Roughead?

Or Watts?

A good backline is more important than having Hurley.

Fools gold if you think Hurley would make our backline if our small and medium defenders were beaten.

I want to see Hurley play on Franklin...

Agree that we need a big defender to play on the monster forwards who always give us a whipping. While ive got concerns about Maguire's durability and ability to play at AFL level again he would be worth a punt at the right price. Id also be interested in knowing the contract status of Harry Taylor and Jason Blake among others. We should also keep a look out in the PSD for any 25-28 year old discards from other clubs that could potentially fill this role.

2nd rounder for Macguire. Get him.

Him at CHB/CHF would do us wonders. Has been in good touch all year in the VFL.

Yep, go the quick fix route and wonder why we are struggling for players a few years down the track when this particular gamble doesn't pay off.

Stupid tactics and we wonder why some sides are doing better than we thought. It's because it is not all about the bleedin' obvious. Some sides have not had the luxury at the draft that we have had but they have used their heads and compensated. Imagine if we were to do the little things right in addition to having our budding champions.

Your opinion on Hurley is way off the mark, this guy is a star at both ends and a player that you can build a team around, it is past history now but structurally this guy would have made a fantastic difference to our team structure.

Hurley would have solved our structural issues as a quality key defender and the ability to also play up forward.

Yes our midfield pressure was not great today, but clearly we had some very average players in defence today, players that will be exposed against the better sides without any doubt on a regular basis.

Maybe Setanta can be that extra tall in defence.

Waite is great for run off that half backline and as a player coming over the top..but man on man waite isnt that great. Plus Waite has a lot of skill and can create, wouldbe great to see him in the forward line.

Setanta and jamison playing on the big men in defence, with thorntan and bower coming over as the third men would be nice.

Austin is another player who will hopefully put on some weight during the pre-season.

Personally, I think I'd like the club to take a punt on Maguire.

In saying that though, I would hope that it would be for nothing more than a 3rd or maybe even 4th round pick at best. We don't know for sure how fit or unfit his body is and he has not played a game for the Saints this season, even when up and running, so a late round draft pick is satisfactory.

Not too sure where St. Kilda see his future or how highly they rate his services at the moment, but if they wanted players perhaps a swap for Fisher? They may even delist him?

We are still a very young team and Maguire, with 99 games experience, will only be 26 next May, an age that we have very few of....

...yeah, it is an interesting question and one which will divide the posters on here I'm sure.

Can play anywhere!
Then then can play Hurley forward and play Hooker at CHB on Franklin, Riewoldt or Watts.

Does Hurley being a better first year player and tall translate into him becoming the best footballer five years from now?

Upside isn't just limited to KPP.

Drafting a KPP doesn't guarantee success if your midfield is unaccountable, slow and turns the ball over .

No backman can stop lace out kicks.

Houlihan had the skill at Yarran's age, but I can't recall Houla laying tackles and running down quick players like Yarran showed today.

I know he's a gun and a versatile player who would have been a valued pick like Rich. Yet it isn't a fair and rational call to label Yarran's talents as a fall back selection because Essendon picked Hurley.

I think you're selling Yarran short by doing that.

Were the four clubs who passed on Hurley wrong and picking in the dark?

It was a super draft, yet Hurley isn't the perfect player like everyone makes out.

Exactly. Game was lost in the midfield and by poor decision making in defence. Thornton and Bower had no chance with the Crows running forward as they did.

Though Waite on Tippett today would have been very handy.

Tend to agree with comment about our midfield, we will never be a serious premiership contender with players such as Houlihan, Carrazzo, Stevens, Scotland, Hadley, Grigg, Simpson and Johnson whom are either very slow and cant make any impression defensively on teams like Adelaide and Essendon when they spread and run or have very ordinary decision making/skill level when they do get the ball pushing through our midfield.

Honestly, this place is becoming more like the Richmond board by the day.

News just in, we're playing a FINAL next week after having beaten Geelong, Collingwood, the Bulldogs and Brisbane(twice) this year.

And pushed the Saints to within nine points.

Grow a pair and stop acting like a victim.

The bitching is unbelievable.

And possibly intentional...

The side is young and nowhere near their peak.

Carlton will win this week with Fevola kicking another bag. :thumbsu:

You guys will be ok.

Next year you should have Waite & Jamo back in defence. Put Warnock in the ruck with Hampson/Cloke and play Kreuzer at chf.

You are only going to get better.

Not bitching it is my opinion that these guys hurt us and cant run with their opponents or make effective decisions or execute effective disposal under pressure. Whilst we continue to have all of these players pushing through our midfield in our regular 22 then we will continually be exploited in these areas. We may be able to get away with having half of them in the side but we must find and develop better replacements.

Touch a nerve did I with 1 or 2 of your favourites???

Do think we will win next week though!

Well Said.:thumbsu:

For those who are upset over the Adelaide loss, I completely understand so here are a few things to remember-
  • 2nd consecutive year of improvement.
  • Still a very young team with another season's experience completed.
  • Waite, Warnock, Hadley, and Jammo will be back next year.
  • Solid Membership base.
...oh yeah, and next week we're playing finals for the first time since '01!:D

Yesterday's loss has been a long time coming in that we've had Jamison, Waite and Austin out for a number of weeks but up against bottom 8 sides...

Warnock has yet to debut, I truly believe there's space for him and Hampson to ruck in the same 22. That leaves Kreuzer to fill the hole in our forward line.

So, we've been 4 talls short. For next year I wouldn't rush out and buy a discard like 'Goose' for a high pick - it's a gamble as to whether someone out of the game so long can return to AA form.

The main thing is to recruit a few talls this draft and hope we don't have such rotten injuries luck with our existing players. Perhaps the 'best available' kid will be 194cm this time!

i think everyone needs to get a grip..yes we got pumped by a team that has consistently does this for years. Adelaide are a well organised team, structured very well with a great tactical coach. We played poorly against Port and Melbourne but managed to win easily...we just got exposed yesterday.

When we last lost a few on in a row, i recall everyone hitting "alarm" buttons and the players reacted very well and ever since we have been in the 8.

Best post all year and exactly right. We still have this arrogance from the Jock years where we can throw money to get the best and be the best and that doesn't work in the long run. Look at bloody Adelaide, they just rebuild so quickly without getting draft picks all the time, or even the Pies, Malthouse has built such an even spread of players.

Sure Jamo and Joseph and maybe Bower have been useful experiments, but our backline - whilst performing well above expectations in the last 8 weeks - was really found out yesterday. Guys like Russel, Houla, Scotland and Stevo - whilst giving some run, are just not drilled and efficient enough to shut down free -running sides - look how easily these guys got swept away this year by the ****ing Bombers, Adelaide and Pies. Walker still has a way to go. And wel still get monstered by the big guys, T-Bird struggles everytime in that respect and Bower just aint there yet. We really need to tighten up our defensive game and work on skills down there, I mean we are probably the worst team on defensive kick-ins, its ridiculous how easily the Crowbots scored from our poor tactice of bringing the ball back in.

Once our defence improves or finds that 'x' factor - who knows a fit Waite and Jamo might be the trick, but all points considered we need a good defender if we're really gonna make top4 consistently.
