I think that half the problem with the reviews, blokes have no idea what warcraft even is assume it's a poor GOT knockoff and write it off accordingly

They watched the movie. What more do you want? You do this with every franchise you like that doesn't get positivity. "Oh they don't know the source material, oh they just dismissed it." Nobody had to go on the Disneyland ride first to like Pirates of the Caribbean.

Bullshit they didn't. I missed out on key plot points because I hadn't ridden it.

But I think Sterge is very right in this case. This movie has a hell of a lot of story behind it that doesn't get explained, it could be very confusing to those with no idea.

Sterge seems to think the viewer has to go look up all that stuff instead of the movie doing the work.

That is simply poor film making then, Star Wars had a lot of unexplained story, as did Lord of the Rings, Alien, pretty much every film that encompasses its own universe. The art is ground it with great characters and a compelling story making people want to know more about the universe. It reads as a case of too much too soon.

If that's the case then that's poor film making though, not the fault of the reviewers.

Edit: As RBB said.

If they had to explain the story behind Medivh, Khadgar, Doomhammer, Durotan, Lothar, Garona, Gul'Dan and everyone else there would be no time to advance the story the movie was pushing. Im sure all those characters will have their stories told in the future movies (most had parts told in this one) but there is simply not enough time to do it, and you can't take any of the characters out as then the story wouldn't make sense at all.

Not that im defending the movie, I haven't seen it, but in regards to character backstories, many movies have little to no backstory on some characters.

Von Sydow in the new Star Wars flick is an example of this apparently in universe big deal character, that we know nothing about.

These movies (that are adapted from already existing universes) often have characters that lack depth. It sounds like this hasn't got the balance quite right, but it also had 40mins of footage cut from it that apparently had a lot of character interaction and exposition in it.

If the two complaints are about characters and editing, that 40min chop could be the cause. The critical reaction appears to be polar opposite to the casual viewer reaction though so id be loath to condemn it as a bad movie due to that.

That would make sense to me, as I said above it was a lot less story and a lot more action than I expected.

I have a problem with the way the whole reviewing system works ive never said they dont understand it before though.

You have to admit this movie will have 2 very different sets of viewers even more so than comic movies.

I've never played the games but the first trailer I liked and thought it looked good. Hopefully it's a decent enough popcorn flick.

Movie will suffer from the "Its a movie about a video game!" label. In reality, its less about the game and more the story BEHIND the game, which is actually a pretty solid fantasy read.
Its a retconn of a retconn of Warcraft I

Anyone read the Warcraft novels? Been looking for something new to read.

I can't wait for this movie, war3 pretty much consumed all of my teenage years, but I never had the time or energy for WoW.

Why would anyone complain about the lack of backstory to some characters? I much prefer it. Much like meeting someone new in real life, you don't usually get their life story blatantly explained to you. It is left largely to the imagination at first, and gradually unravels over time. Abit of mystery makes the characters more interesting. Just my opinion though

I've read the War of the Ancient trilogy where Broxigar became one of my favourite characters of all time (In Warcraft). I have read Of Blood and Honor, and I think I have read Day of the Dragon. People seem to hate Knaaks style of writing but I really enjoyed the books

Thanks, yeah a quick read of people's views online seem pretty negative, but reviews don't really sway my opinion. Might give it a shot.

Metacritic has a Critic score of 3.2 and a user score of 9.2 at the moment don't think ive ever seen that big of a gap

I enjoyed the movie. Probably wasn't long enough in terms of story/character development but I daresay that would be a studio issue not a producer one. Felt like they were forced to a time limit.

I guess it helped that I knew the world a bit and had a bit of background knowledge before the fact. Loved the visuals and the magic and the Orcs looked top notch.
