Re: ward vs macmahon

Hes looking alright young Ward. He certainly knows how to find the pill, but still is having a few problems with his awareness and decision making.

But either way, he is still way better than McMahon haha.

Re: ward vs macmahon

The last two weeks he has started slowly and got better as the game went on Ward. Today he cost us a crucial goal when he marked on the wing and took off without looking behind him and was caught with footy and a direct Kangaroos goal in the 3rd term.

He hopw ever has had a ripping last quarter the last 2 weeks :thumbsu:

Re: ward vs macmahon

Ward (18 year old playing in the seniors of a high flying club with massive depth)

vs

McMahon (25 year old who cant make the senior team of a massively underperforming club with very average depth)

Cant decide really. Will have to think about it during the finals.

Re: ward vs macmahon

Alright, I have had a few beers but Callan Ward is Voss like!!!!!

Tough, one grab, natural footballer, born leader.....

This kid is special.

Cooney, Griffen, Ward.......Boyd Cross etc etc great mix of tougness and skill.

The kid is a gun at stoppages. Just gets to the pill. Very impressed with his courage. Just needs a mature body to go with the rest off his attributes.

Re: ward vs macmahon

Very impressive today young Cal. One bad decision when he got caught playing on, but apart from that got a fair bit of it and used it fairly well. Will continue to improve, but looking very good at this stage =]

Re: ward vs macmahon

He was alright today, a few times though he does lack awareness. Have to remember though that he's the same age as most of the guys who were drafted this year.

Of the three first round draft picks that have left us recently (others being Ray and Power) McMahon seems to be travelling the worst.

Thanks for Ward - I think he'll be a beauty.

not sure if he's got outside issues that are effecting him but looks like his confidence is shot. he's a down hill skier at the best of times and we have to many of those types. oh well see you monday!

Thats the impression I have about McMahon is that he is a confidence player. When things arn't going well for him, he drops his bundle. When he is up and playing well, he is not too bad a player. But when he is under pressure or suffering lost confidence, his kicking goes way south.

The other thing about him is that he is one of those players who when he plays badly, is easily noticed. I thought he played some good games for you last year, but he played some absolute shockers as well.

He surprised me a bit going to Richmond on big money. For a confidence player like him, it was a strange move, as Richmond supporters can be fairly unforgiving at times, so this backlash was always going to happen at some stage. Brown on the other hand oozes self confidence, so Richmond is a fairly good match for him IMO.

Re: ward vs macmahon

The Ward/McMahon trade reminds me of that Simpsons moment where Bart trades Homer his delicious doorstop for Homer's crummy old danish.

Re: ward vs macmahon

Geez, tough call. An 18 yo with a 23 yo footy brain, gets his own pill, and has a HUGE upside, Vs a give it to me running backman who wilts under any physical or mental pressure. Hmmm...

hooroo...

Re: ward vs macmahon

gotta say I love his attack on the footy. when the game was on the line he was right in the action trying to force the ball forwards. Does have some awareness issues and seems to still be adjusting to the pace of the game. D.A was the same about 18 months ago and look at how he's travelling now.

Best thing is I reckon he's still growing into his body.

Re: ward vs macmahon

just finished reading the above comments - wardy made a few more than just one mistake today - put that down to inexperience, bad weather and sliipery pill and poor awareness etc

but on the whole, he seemed to get the pill well, and he tackles hard and does great in the 50 50 contests, so i think there is a huge upside with him

very impressed:thumbsu:

cheers

His occasional lack of awareness under pressure for me tells a tale of a young footballer looking for the perfect option all the time, instead of taking the first satisfactory one which is what most AFL players have to do.

This is a positive IMO, as he learns the trade he will work out when to take the acceptable option and when to create and take the perfect one. If he was drafted as a top age player he would have gone top ten (moot point of course).

Can't wait to see him put on some serious weight. He will never be a quick burst player and his ability to win the ball in close will become a greater factor when he can throw his body around a bit.

Yes, got caught with it a lot but should be a very good player.
