I thought Ward did a few good things, but also a few ordinary things.
I know he is only nineteen years of ago, but some of the soft efforts he put in were not promising. He shirked it a few times and was a bit soft in a few of the contests. A lot of upside to his game though. Also needs to work alot harder to find the ball.

Great at times, but can be ordinary defensively in letting his man get away (Andrew Embley got free reign from him in particular).

Still - plenty to like about him and I really loved his goal when he did that sidestep thing and straightened up. It's only his second season and he totally deserves his place in the side. And he's from Spotty too:thumbsu:

I tend to disagree with this. IMO his main strength is his inside game and winning the contested ball. He had ten tackles last night. I also heard Rocket interviewed today and he said that 80% of Wards possessions were contested(not sure whether he is talking about last night or the season). So for a 19 year old, winning the ball and tackling are extremely good. IMO, if there is one area he needs to work on, it is his disposal at times and kicking for goal.

What a player he is though and he is only going to get better. I am really happy that he is playing so well and getting games into him.

I guess that Rich has the Rising Star Award stitched up.

Ward may prove to be a better player than Rich in future years.

I am very impressed with him and he shows something special every few weeks or so.

Just take a real good look at him ... and he's only 19.

He makes you go wow!

You are a goose, please give examples of when he has ever shirked it.

So is he finally going to get the rising star nomination this week?
Errr...he already had one a couple of weeks back.

To the peanut who reckons he shirked a couple of contests, please elaborate. The kid would have to be one of the hardest players of his age going round. Love him....and so does Eade.

Made me think "*#^% me he is GOOD" against the pies. Just....going to be something awesome. The way he always seems to be able to get the ball away, keep his hands free and ride tackles, then stick tackles going back the other way.....just seems like he is going to be an awesome 10 year + player for us. Very impressed.

While he might stuff the odd thing up (he's only young), "soft" and "shirked" are two words I would NOT use with Ward.

It actually might be a close call, Rich's last month hasn't that flash and he not going in as hard as he was at the beginning of the season, but Callan has had a more consistent season and seems to be finishing well.

Not 100% sure but have heard bookies are already paying out on Rich winning.

If he doesn't then Beames from the PIes is next cab off the rank as he is a Pies player and profile is important with these awards.

That comment wins TOOL of the year award:eek:

Surely that is not correct. If Rich gets reported this week and then cops a suspension, then good bye rising star award.

Haven't seen a lot of Rich yet but I'd need a fair bit of arm twisting if anyone suggested we do a straight swap of Rich for Ward.

No doubt they'll both be great players for many years but Ward adds a fair amount of physicality and aggression that we've lacked in past years. Not easily knocked off the ball and is able to bust through defenders and get a disposal out.

The figures show they are about the same height but to me Ward just looks more imposing. Although Ward was drafted a year earlier he is only two months older than Rich.

The respective club web sites have Ward as 185cm and 76kg and Rich as 184cm and 83kg. However I reckon Ward is probably closer to 85kg now.

As an aside, it really annoys me that the WB website data is pathetically out of date (he was listed as 76kg way back at the start of 2008 FFS!)

As good as Ward is and has been this year, Rich would be a fair way in front of him for the rising star IMO. Rich's left foot is unbelievable in the distance he kicks the ball and with the accuracy as well. He would be in the top 20 kicks in the competition and he is only in his first year.

They are both completely different players. Ward is a very good player and has different attributes to Rich.

ward is great and will be part of the spine of this club for many years to come but lets not kid ourselves, rich is so far ahead of anyone its not funny. Those 50-60m drop punt bullet passes he does to forwards so they only need to get a 1m lead on their opponents is uncanny.
