Warne calls S.Waugh "Most selfish" cricketer he's played with

How was Steve Waugh selfish? I get that he put a few shots away and was hardly glamorous but that is what he needed to do to perform so so be it. If it refers to him putting the tail on strike at the time Waugh was considered one of the better exponents of batting with the tail (they said he gave them confidence) and the same people calling Waugh selfish are the same ones that crack the shits when a team is 9 down and the fielders go back and no runs are scored.

You can't call a blocker selfish just because they don't have every shot. May as well call Rogers, Cowan selfish. (Ironically two guys I did find a touch self interested who clogged up innings were M Hussey during his slump and Kallis but they get the good bloke pass).

As for Warne. FFS he was dropped (justifiably). Once. For one ******* test. Not like he didn't come straight back in at the expense of an unlucky Magill. And he is just as guilty of the selfishness and self interest he accuses Waugh of.

Wonder if he’s added anything since his last autobiography
Or the one before. That was self serving tripe about how those kids in New Zealand were gonna blackmail him...

Maybe if you hadn't been up all night on the piss and having sex mid-Test, you wouldn't have got out for a duck and we'd have had more runs to defend. I don't think I've ever read anything more self-serving that still fails to at all excuse the author.

I just love that.

HE needed to let loose and wind down because HE couldn't handle the pressure, at the teams detriment. Couldn't make runs when a scratchy 15 would have been big in the scheme of things.

But it is the others who arevstupid and selfish!

In the 27 test run outs Waugh was involved in; 23 times it was the other bloke who was dismissed. So he was happy to give the tail the strike and happy to run them out as well.

Which is fair enough I suppose but doesn’t help your case when looking at the most selfish cricketer award.

Don't reckon either Waugh or Bevan were particularly selfish; when you're the last recognised batsman and a proven matchwinner, your wicket is the most valuable and should be protected at all costs. Can't think of many occasions where either caused us to lose specifically because of any interest other than trying to win the match.

I watched Bevan refuse to take an extra moderately risky run (sent the tail ender back) on the last ball of an innings setting a total batting. Most blatant playing for the red ink I've ever seen on a cricket field.

Chappell wasn’t too keen on him either

“But the thing I couldn’t abide with Steve was that he was such a selfish cricketer,” Chappell said in Test of Character.

“When he came out and said this was to be his last season, so he could have the grand tour and get all the accolades and all of that s**t, he called Damien Martyn through for a ridiculous run at the Gabba. Damien should have just stayed where he was and Steve would have been run out by miles. Disgraceful. That’s just a minor example but there are many, many examples.

“I shouldn’t say he’s the most selfish cricketer I’ve ever seen because he’s not, but he’s certainly the most selfish Australian cricketer I’ve ever seen.”

Dhoni does the same thing.

But they have saved teams in many moments to counteract that

Warne has always sounded like a parrot mimicking chappelli when having a go at waugh and others so not sure this adds any weight to Warnies argument.

It's sad that he goes on about a single Test match nearly 20 years ago, when only months later the two spearheaded one of the great triumphs in Australian modern cricket history- the 1999 World Cup. As mentioned above, whatever issues they had in the Test arena were absent in the ODI format as Waugh continued to back Warne in despite some ordinary performances earlier in the tournament.

Also, I've stated many times that I'm a Chappelli fan, but when he can't find room for Steve Waugh in his top 20-something Ashes performers, then his opinion on the man becomes null and void due to his own bitter bias.

It certainly helps if our “ greatest Captain” goes out of his way to call Waugh the most selfish Aussie cricketer he’s ever seen. Forget what Warnie rekons and have think why Chappell would be prepared to put that out there.

Yeah this is the same bloke who campaigned non stop for warne to be made test skipper just a few months after warne admitted to taking money from a bookie an act that would have been unforgivable treason if steve waugh had taken the money instead, chappell like warne just cant separate personal grudges from fact when analyzing certain players, they are both knowledgeable cricketers without a doubt but they are also petty and often just downright unprofessional commentators when it comes to certain players or playing styles and it taints their views on issues like this.

Shane "O'Keefe is a whiteball specialist" Warne.

Well we all saw Waugh bat with the tail and the 27 run outs with the other bloke being out 23 times.
Surely you can see that there is at least something to base assumptions that Waugh was selfish. Eg valued his average probably more than he should have.
Whether anybody needs to point any of that and out call him the most selfish is another story.
But Waugh wrote a book and made assertions about others so I guess it’s all fair game... if not pointless.

Warnie is like the complete opposite of that other champion Aussie leggie icon, in Richie Benaud.

Richie was classy, dapper, smooth, emotionally balanced, considered, intelligent & well liked.
Richie was the outlier, unfortunately.

I could go on.

I can cop people saying Waugh was a bit selfish batting with the tail.

But those saying that should also cop that other players could just as easily be considered selfish for going down the route of not being as prepared to shelf their natural instincts for the team like Waugh did.

Liked to hook, kept getting out to it. So he put the shot away for good. Boon went back up to the top of the order when Marsh disappeared - who stepped into the breach at 3 for a whole summer against Walsh, Ambrose and Bishop? Waugh.
For every theory about waugh’s Selfishness there’s another to show how he put the team first.

Steve Waugh made the most out of what limited abilities he did possess.....His skill lay in knowing his own limitations better than anyone else.

As to which vice is worse, being a selfish captain for your country or a narcissistic flog who just can't grow up, then I'll leave that for others to decide.

Nonsense; if a run out is on between a recognised batsman and tailender, the tailender should always sacrifice themselves. You'd rather Waugh walk and leave Gillespie/McGrath to shore up the innings?
