Absolute garbage to get out. Pretty good summer overall, in with the runs and the catches, and the run outs. Impressive average considering his average against SA wasn't fantastic. Gets himself caught far too often and too many fails over the course of the summer, but it's bound to happen, but 7 of 11 innings under 50 is concerning, especially when he's usually getting himself out in comical fashion.

I would say batting has been a lot easier in that past 20 years or so with bigger bats shorter boundaries and lot of flat wickets. i would say was lot harder to avg 50 if you played in 80s and early 90s.

How come not more batsmen are averaging 50 plus then?

Conversely low scores sub 100-150 are more common now, maybe bowlers are better at exploiting the conditions overall than they used to be?

I don't buy the everything used to be better/harder

Are you sure less batsmen are averaging 50? One from Pakistan, at least 2 from India, two from SA - I think de Kock will make it 3, 3 from Australia, one from NZ, one I think from England, one from Bangladesh. That's a fair whack and remember we've lost Kallis, Sanga, Voges (haha) and a few others in the last few years.

In the 80s era, there tended to be on average about three or four, and they were generally low fifties. It was rare for averages to be really high, even after a few tests. There are quite a lot of low team totals, but the theory is that when they strike a difficult pitch, they cannot cope because batsmen are so used to roads.

There are probably more extremely high totals around these days too.

The bats should be reduced to the size they were in the seventies.

It would also be good to see something in the SCG for the bowlers. Chris Rogers said he loved opening there because even on day one there was nothing in the track for the quicks. It aint test cricket anymore in a lot of respects. To have scoring rates of seven plus per over is ridiculous.

I know everything looks rosy in hindsight but remember how good Haynes and greenidge were averaging mid 40s, and blokes like Miandad, Gavaskar and Border were superhuman averaging 50 against some of the bowling of that era.

One from Pakistan, at least 2 from India, two from SA - I think de Kock will make it 3, 3 from Australia, one from NZ, one I think from England, one from Bangladesh. That's a fair whack and remember we've lost Kallis, Sanga, Voges (haha) and a few others in the last few years.

Graeme Smith's average wasn't far off fifty and he wasn't considered that good a batsman by many.

Three blokes averaged over 50 during the 1990s.

Just read the average first innings score from 2000-2013 was 344 and between 1980-99 it was 316.

So by that logic and if 2nd innings are similar averages are up by 2.8 or so from that period

I think you will find they are, but not by as much as might be expected.
Batsman have changed the wya they play, they aren't so cautious. They know they can get away with things their predecessors could not. And, even in Tests, they try them. As a result I think you wopuld find strike rates have gone up considerably, as has risk taking. The extra risk almost, but not quite, eliminates the improvement in averages that shoudl be expected.

The one thing that possibly works against batsmen is the better footage. Every game, every move, is analysed in HD and super slo-mo.
That cuts both ways, but its presumably easier to stop and think about a set plan for a batsman, than react to a delivery with knowledge and conscious thought in 0.3-0.4 of a second.

That de villiers fellow seems to have quite the record at the moment.

Amla has spent 6-7 years above 50 and will probably finish there too. If we had this discussion a test ago he would be there so you may as well count him

I think retiring at age 33 (having last played in Australia in 2012) has something to do with it, too. Kind of lost in the memory a little. He could have had another 3-4 years and 25-35 Tests, still have been on the recent tour of Australia as well.
