Consider also these blokes went completely unrested for a half, their performances last night look pretty good

:thumbsu: this too. Wont be many rucks that our boys tanks wont run ragged this year. All 3 are athletic. All 3 run hard to contests all over the ground. All 3 are good at ground level for big blokes and can clunk contested marks as well as any, and can kick goals. Very lucky to have these 3. Would all get games in most clubs, Hammer being the only "project" player not yet to fully prove himself.

I thought both did quite well for an opening game. I have more issue with Hammer's kicking than his marking.
Why don't professional footballers when taking a set shot on goal actually move with purpose towards the goal before they kick. It is seriously annoying.

If Hammer had dobbed the goals he should have got no one would have given a shit about the marks he dropped on a wet night.

Warnock is going to be one of the better ruckmen in the comp if he isn't already.

Hampson could be a gun but his kicking action still isn't up to standard. Far too big a ball drop and too much room for error. Cannot be missing from 20 metres out and by a fair margin at that. Clunked a few and looked good at ground level; good intensity and at times too much.

Conditions last night were terrible for marking and as others have pointed out in other threads, delivery into the forward line wasn't exactly a feature.

Folks are hailing Jack, who is credited with 6 marks for the game, and Hammer managed 5. If he'd slotted 3 goals instead of the 1.2 he managed, I doubt we'd even be talking about his dropped marks.

This. Not a great game, but not far off being reasonable. Certainly is a big presence down forward and can play a role as he learns and gains more confidence. Crumbers (Eddie and Jeff), Waite, Henderson, Walker and Hampson/Warnock will learn to coordinate their efforts better as they play more games together down forward. Let's go with this set-up for now and see where it takes us. Kreuzer will be a bonus when he comes back.

Good thing with Hampson is also his work on the ground - couple of high tackles last night but he'll improve with more game time, but make no mistake, this bloke will be a real asset, and if he'd played the game as a youngster he'd already be another Kurt Tippet. This bloke deserves more patience than most - would hate to see him at GCS or GWS. Needs a bit more controlled aggression and game sense, he'll hold more marks when his game sense improves as he'll get into the right positions more often; crumbers need to get into the right spots when he goes up in a pack.

From that height he needs a laser guidance system!

Hope he's getting intensive one-on-one coaching re his technique given he's a late convert to the game. Noticed in one of his first games in the Reserves three years ago I think, where he kicked a beautiful goal from 55m out on the wing. Maybe it's confidence, maybe it's technique. When players get a regular spot and feel they're part of the team they can make big strides - hopefully this happens.

I think this is important for Hampson, but how do you build that in?
At times Hampson looks more love-struck out there, than someone who is going to smash packs and incite fear into the opposition.

Maybe Duigan can have a little chat to Hammer :D

Yeah, easy to say I guess, but we'll just have to trust the coaches are working on his faults and make gradual inroads. He'll never be a Jonathon Brown mind you - but then, not sure of the value of JB when he only ever seems to play half a season due to injury as a result of crashing packs all the time. Duigan's head on Hampson's body - now that would be the best big man in the league!:D

Knockers was good, as he should have been. The second efforts and work rate were all there. He's looking good.

Twelve months ago Hammer wasn't even getting to the drop of the ball. Now he is - consistently. His body use has improved out of sight, and he's starting to clunk them. The boy is learning. If not for a few teammates flying against him he would have grabbed more (Robbo was one).

He wasn't Mick Malone when it came to missing shots - it took seven attempts to find the middle.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If we can teach Earl Spaulding to kick straight, we can teach anyone. He's big and strong enough to take most of his marks within 20m of goal. He doesn't have to be Bernie Quinlan to convert from there.

On Hampson and marking

People are focusing on the wrong aspect of his game - I actually dont think marking is too much of an issue anymore. Whilst hampson dropped a few simple looking ones, he DID take 5 marks for the game including which is equal 10-14th on ground (ie top 30% of players in the game) - not too bad given the number of cheap/loose marks that mids get nowadays. More importantly, several of those marks were CONTESTED.

Had he kicked the 3 shots (all gettable), most people's opinions about his performance for the game would have changed. What he needs to do is get more of the ball around the ground - he only had 7 touches - equal 4-5th lowest (bottom 10% of players). Of the players that had less poessessions, waite played under 1/2 a game before getting concussed and lucas/conners were subs.

Consider the following possession tallies for players that had 5 or marks in the game (lowest to highest)

hampson - 7 possies + 5 marks
reidwolt - 11 possies + 6 marks (largely a forward with minimal time up the ground)
conca - 15 possies + 6 marks
walker - 16 possies + 5 marks
houli - 18 possies + 10 marks
all others - 22+ possies + 5 or more marks

In 36 games, hampson has reached a double figure possession tally just 6 times (16%) - he needs to work on lifting that to 80+% to go with the 10+ HOs he normally gets as a backup ruck + the marking he has displayed for the early part of this season (ie 5+). If he does that then he will be extremely valuable as a backup ruckman and have a real influence on games (ie better than the current gold standard - brown from pies) - particularly if there are a few games of 15+ possessions.

12 HOs, 7 possessions, 5 marks + 3 shots of goal is actually reasonable for a backup ruckman - 12 HOs, 10+ possessions, 5 marks + 3 goals would have been great.

I think this is a key - need a stable forward six who can learn to work together more: this is the final stage of development. Hopefully we don't suffer the big losses in years gone by that resulted in wholesale changes to the side. Hate seeing three team-mates flying for the mark and the ball spilling to the opposition: need more smarts and percentage plays up forward.

I really like Hammer and I'm extremely pleased with his improvements. I agree that I'd be more worried about getting his kicking more stable than his marking, because while he dropped a few and probably always will, in unlikely conditions and when we needed someone to just take damn contested mark, he looked like the man who could do it and he did a few times. To take one in the last quarter and kick that very important goal had me clapping for him.

Remember this was a guy who once upon a time in training would mis-kick it off his knee :o:D

i thought warnock was fantastic, really set thge tone in the first quarter. hampson was serviceable but im concerned he goes missing to much and with this new sub rule it could hurt us! what im more amazed at is that no-one at carlton has told another player to stand behind hammer when flying for a mark, he would get the pill 50% & hammer would mark the other 50%

Here's my take.

Warnock gave our midfield first use of the ball with his taps outs to advantage in a dominant display. Played a big role in our midfield dominance. Lost the ruck advantage in the third and all the suden the Richmond mids and in particular Cotchin dominated. Aside from his tapwork he provided no presence around the ground. I think he is a lazy footballer with lots of talent. Good mark when in front but in packs is easily outbodied by smaller opponents. Needs to strengthen up to hold his ground in marking contests. Is a frustrating player to watch given his unfulfilled ability.

Hampson was taken as a long term project player. We supporters need to give him time. Crossed over from another code where strong marking was not required.

I feel he has progressed osince last year, particular in his marking. His kicking for goal is a major concern. Last year the ball bounced off his hand in markig contests whereas this year his hands has softened. In the first half he was holding on to them whereas when the ball got greasy in the third, the bal would slip through his hands. He does not know how to mark in the wet. Really like how he attacks the ball and busts packs open in marking contests. With time this kid will become a focal point for us, impatient supporters. Someone needs to teach him how to convert those opportunities.

Both did well but in my opinion Kreuzer will always be our premier ruckman.

I've noticed over multiple games the speed Warnock can get the ball to boot in tight situations. Not bad for such a big man. Hands of course are good too.

Yeh he is very quick, the win against Geelong last year he mowed down Wojinski...and his overall game is great..

I'd like to see Hampson hold more marks. I think he tries to mark directly above his head too much. Needs to mark more out in front.

Warnock was decent but get's out bodied a bit much and could be more aggressive in contested marking. Love his efforts at ground level and his poise with the ball.
with his size that should be impossible-more core work and sumo squats

Warnock took 3 marks and had 30 hit outs, Hammer took 5 and had 12 hit outs. Contrast that to Graham had 4 marks and 16 hit outs and Vickery who had 3 marks and 7 hit outs.

Got a stat on how many marks he dropped? And how many of them were easy grabs for a bloke his size?

He wasn't terrible, but i don't think he had a great game either. He dropped too many easy ones in the square against defenders 10cm shorter than him, and shanked that kick 20m out half way through the game which was, well, demoralising to say the least.

He has a enormous potential, but he's hardly lighting the world on fire yet. He needs time, and he'll get plenty of it.

The only problem I can see with Hampson's marking, is that we, the fans, pretty much know when a bloke has his name written all over the ball when it's coming down and nine times out of ten the player will mark it.

However, against Richmond, there were a few occasions where the ball had "Hampson" written all over it and he missed those crucial grabs and because we are so conditioned at seeing most AFL footballers taking those sorts of marks we naturally enough get very disappointed. Sadly, this overshadows all the other fine work he is doing around the ground.

Logic says, that over time and with practice he will get more and more consistent and eventually I see him as becoming a Brad Ottens type who does some ruck work, some bullocking work around the ground, followed up with some fine grabs and goals from within the goal square. Come the second half of this season Hammer will be an absolute problem for other sides to coach against - and we will be singing his praises.

Yeah its kept on the same page as the stat for Carlton fans that bag one of their own after a win. Go look it up, I think you are in line for MVP.
