Seriously though - the best part about it is that we have NOTHING TO LOSE.

Worst Case scenario, we can't come to a deal he goes to either Melbourne or Freo picks him up again in the PSD (unlikely) - and we go back to last week again where we were all excited about Pick #6, #24 etc :D
Spot on.

Last year would have been a hard pill to swallow had we missed out on Judd, the best player in the league. We'll move on if we miss on Warnock.

Fremantle have Plan B that makes the Veale Deal look like a Chrismas famiily get together. Believe it or not Fremantle are WELL prepared for this. Its been on the cards for 3 months now. They know exactly what they want, how they want it and how they are gonna get it even if it may look dodgy in the end

Given that players have to agree on the club they are being traded to, I can't see anything like the Veale deal going through. Given that Warnock has indicated Carlton as his destination, Fremantle have two choices.

Deal with us, or another club in a 3 way deal to get Warnock to Carlton

Lose him for nothing in the PSD.

The Veale deal was used for this very reason. Doggies (Melbourne) wanted Rawlings (Warnock), but Rawlings (Warnock) wanted to join North (Carlton). Hawthorn (Fremantle) wanted to deal with Dogs (Melbourne). So if Melbourne trump your offer, say Pick 17 and 19 for Warnock is on the table, they trade those picks for Ryan Murphy with the verbal agreement that Robbie is left to the PSD.

Essentially:-

Freo Gain:picks 17 & 19
Melbourne get: Ryan Murphy, Warnock (PSD-has to nominate terms and Dees match them.

Carlton: Miss out if they don't offer what Freo want.

I'm not saying this will happen, but it has the dynamics to unfold if Melbourne agree to pay a decent price and Carlton don't want to up the ante.

You didn't just say that, did you?

T-Bird:rolleyes:

As pointed out by another poster, Warnock wants to move back to Melbourne, so keeping him over the other side of the country against his will is a bit different to one Melbourne based club digging its heels in to keep a player who wants to move to another Melbourne based club.

Nothing would happen if you nomiated pick 19 to Freo. He doesn't want to go to your club. He's not contracted so he could just walk.

walk....into the PSD to Melbourne? :p

The AFL did say they were going to monitor any deals like the Veale deal from occurring while that Judd saga was going on last year though.

I wonder what would happen if we offered pick 19 to Freo?
Easy.
Warnock says "I want to go to Carlton.......are you guys gonna stuff that for the sake of 5 picks higher in the draft??? .......Well stuff you then.......I won't agree to it"

Freo now face the choice - lose him for nothing to the PSD or take pick 24 and send him to his desired club.

Which do you think they will do?

Is their line in the sand "We are willing to lose players for nothing to prove we won't be bullied".......worked well for Port didn't it?

They will take the pick and run.:thumbsu:

Couldn't agree more, It doesnt matter what other clubs offer, if Warnock doesnt agree to the trade it ain't happening. He has nominated Carlton and we currently have the upper hand. Otherwise PSD and Freo get nothing.

Remember, this story is by Greg "Voss Will Coach Carlton" Denham.

and even the article on afl.com.au is qualified by "according to a report in Friday's The Australian newspaper".

The only quote is from Swann who could have been responding to a question from Denham suggesting that Warnock had nominated Carlton, but there is still no official word from Warnock or his manager on the matter.

I really hope Warnock has/does nominate(d) us but something isn't sounding right about it so far...

Same year as Thornton wanted out, Russell wanted to go back to Adelaide. Our response was to tell him to sign up or we'd pick him up in the PSD anyway.

Port did just that in 2003 when Stevo wanted to go to Collingwood. Quite rightly too. It sends a 'deal fairly with us or not at all' message to all and sundry.

I doubt Freo have the bottle for that though.

Football is a business, why would you give up something for nothing when you can get something for it. It makes no sense, it won't make any difference with future trades, it won't make other teams scared and offer above the odds when dealing with freo. Clubs will just say stuff you we offer this if not you get nothing. What port did didn't make them a better club, it just showed how pig headed and dumb they are. Not that i'm complaining we did get stevo for nothing.

Great that he's coming. I wonder how this will effect the futures of Cloke and Hammer though, unless we play Kreuzer up in the forward line on a more consistant basis.

Of course it makes sense. As you say, footy is a business. Sure, Port lost out on that particular deal but long term they're better off. Now everyone knows that you deal fairly with Port or not at all. Just as importantly the Port players know that they can't just waltz out and expect to end up at the club of their choice.

Freo are rebuilding rather than coming off successive minor premiorships.

Easy to talk tough when you are on top of the ladder and not in desperate needs of draft picks.

Freo WILL deal up and take pick 24.

The speculation is that Griffen may go to Freo, Warnock to us and maybe pick 24.......or a player (Houlihan or Russell?) to the Crows.

Hell, I'd send Russ and Hartlett and keep pick 24 if we can.

Will hurt Cloke if Warnock signs with the Blues
Cloke was only ever going to be a short term ruck option.

I think you will see Cloke doing a pre-season as a forward (which is what the Pies recruited him as) and trying to prolong his career next to Fev.:thumbsu:

I'd be willing to give away Bannister aswell just to sweeten the deal :D
