Yep. Carey's explanation on FC last night was spot on.
It was a push. Richo pushed and anyone can see.

Yes it was a push, and technically it was a free kick under the new rules, but i think the new rules should scrapped because that shouldn't be a free kick in our game. By having this rule, there are less contests and it's just turning our game into a sissy sport.

Agreed. Under the new rule and it is a new rule not an interpretation of an old one cos hands in the back has never been the rule its been a push out. But under this rule it was a free kick. However the rule is a blight on the game. As a backmen my self it has and the AFL continues to make our jobs impossible. No wonder we are seeing massive scores kicked this year eg. geelong vs richmond and the brisbane vs carlton matches. Its because defenders are totaly confused as to what they can do these days. Its so stupid, scrap the rule right now!

As others above have said, it was a free under the current rules. But i don't really like those rules.
Carey explained how just before Richo took his hands off Mal's back that his hands flicked forward, which ONLY happens during a pushing motion. He was in no doubt that it was a free kick under the old rules. The replay shows this clearly.

Can you show me where exactly is this new rule written in the AFL Laws of the Game? I bet you will spend the rest of your life trying to find it.
it wasnt a push just a hand in the back. but under the new intepretation it was a free kick.. the ump might of seen it as a push because mal michael was under the ball and richo was in better position.. the 50m however was a bit rich seeing as richo said he couldnt hear the ump or the whistle.. any other year prior to this one that was not a free kick and richo wouldve kicked 5
