Was Slats good or bad?

Burton missed many attempts for goal, and 8 uncontested marks for Burton, I don't know how you can call it a top performance by Slatts.

Are you thick? Most of those "uncontested" marks Burton took when Welsh was playing on him! Slattery was on Burton's hammer every time he went near the ball. At least he gave a contest, Welsh was pathetic. Burton could have easily kicked 4-5 on Welsh alone.

Slatts did his job, and Knights would be happy with his performance.

I've watched Slattery very closely over the past month, i really dont think he is a defender. A number of times he just didnt punch the ball in a one on one marking contest, maybe he needs to build his engine and have a go on the ball but overall i really dont think he is up to AFL standards.

Had a decent last quarter but was tooeasily beaten a couple of times in the third- granted playing on a real good player. But overall he doesn't really inspire confidence, least of all when he has the ball in hand - decision making not his long suit. However we don't have a lot of defensive options which is probably why we re-signed him .
As for him not being a defender , if he ain't that , dont know what else he's going to be.

He was really good at times and really bad at other times.

One thing I noticed last night and annoyed the hell out of me was that a few times while Slats has just contested in a 1-1 and the ball was pushed out to the boundary line his instinct was to turn and look around somewhere behind him (at the umpire?) instead of making the second effort like his opponent was.
On one occasion his opponent picked the ball up in play with slats metres away and it nearly happened again later on.

Don't really know how to rate his game last night but his effort on Burton was very good imo

Was hideous in the first 3 quarters then got away with some crucial one on one contests in the last quarter.

Each of those contests could have been a free to Burton.

Liability

I would've though Burton was one of the most influential players on the ground, it can be argued that Adelaide constantly look for him but unfortunately Slattery is very sloppy in both contests, disposal and decision making... I get nervous every time he goes near a contest!

Burton's is their #1 target up forward and they do tend to goto him quite often, and considering this I thought Slatts did an ok job.

Should definately stay in the team, it's not like we've got any other players in that position who are better than him anyways.

Why won't we use Slattery where he'll be praised, In the middle as a tagger.

We've got him down back because he's a good rover and defender.

But obviously he's giving too many uncontested marks away, and keeping Burton to 2 goals is good but how many did the Birdman set up for the crows?

By what standards can last night's performance be considered good? It was one of his better nights yet that is nowhere near AFL standard. If we are going to accept Slatts' work last night as good then we are in for a painful few years.

Playing 1 quarter of good football isn't enough, he needs to at least play his best for half a match...I don't like him all that much to be honest, to slow, gives away silly free kicks and his skills are a bit dodgy...Slatts shouldn't of been offered that 3 year (?) contract but I hope he proves me wrong and improves on some of his negative points...:thumbsu:

Monfries is the same, slow, gives away some silly free kicks and doesn't have the best of skills for an average pace player that relys heavily on their skills...He does put his head over the footy at times which I admire, but in modern footy, you need to do more than that to get a game...So I'd be looking at him at the end of the year to be put on the trade table to ship over to SA, even though it'd be sad to see him go, but when you're rebuilding, you have to make some tough calls...

Whether he's AFL standard or not, this thread is about his performance last night. He kept Burton pretty quiet after he towelled Welsh up, and was very good in the last quarter. He has a future.

Because Monfries/Hocking will be playing this role in the middle, and Slattery is needed more down back because our lack of quality small defenders.

Because he is too slow.

I thought he was pretty ordinary.

He was just lucky that he was allowed to get away with murder on Burton.

Gave away his usual quota of stupid free kicks.

He is not creative at all. If he is going to be so defense minded he has to atleast blanket his opponent week in week out.

He is nearing on 50 career games now. He should be a lot better.

Slats was bad.

I agree with an earlier post that said he was a glutton for punishment, failing to setup well in front of Burton.

The last straw was when Burton collected the ball on the boundary line, held the ball in the field of play while pulling away from Slats, and then centred to a teammate. Slats could have forced that ball out if he'd pushed harder at the start of the contest, but he just thought Burton wouldn't keep it in...

I won't get carried away though, and make any long-sweeping statements about Slats career. Just learn from this...

I don't think he is up to AFL standard but last night he did the job that was asked of him and for that I give hima tick but with players coming back from injuries he will need to up his game
