Hafey, Baraasi and Kennedy were undoubtably master-coaches and numerous players who played under them went on to be coaches. Several players and assistant-coaches under Sheedy have also gone on to the number one job.

Now, we have Crocker and Lyon, who were both assistants under the spud, and Knights who played under him, all senior coaches. Campbell who also played under the spud is apparently a coach-in-waiting. By next season we could have up to a quarter of the competition coached by spud's proteges. Was he just misunderstood and was he really the latest of the master-coaches????????????????????????????

Spud also was a back line coach (in 07 i think) at Hawthorn. Molded a young group into miserly back men who relished the contest, and didn't take a backward step. Under his tutelage they were cherry ripe for the 08 onslaught and subsequent premiership victory (credit where credit is due).

Master coaches like Clarkson picked his brain on many subjects, some including football. Damien Hardwick was also exposed to the leadership and coaching style of the man the world affectionately calls Spud. It is hoped Hardwick brings the lessons he learned under Spudley, to the rarefied atmosphere that is the Richmond Football Club.

He also invented 'collision footy', and famously called the NMFC "too old, too slow" -who then proceeded to over run us!

A misunderstood and often maligned man is one Danny Frawley. Some would argue he was ahead of his time, while others say he was too beautiful for the coaching world.

Wayne Brittain wont be a senior coach but he is right hand man to a senior coach.

Knights game plan is so opposite to Frawleys that it almost looks like rebellion towards how Spud felt the game should be played.

Some people become rich by being exposed to poverty because it creates an aversion to it that they go to the opposite extreme.

Maybe these blokes have come on because they have learned what NOT to do.

Britain, Hutchison - even former senior coaches wanted to work for the kingmaker. I'm sure there is a word for the esteem the spud is held in football circles.

he just must have been so far ahead of his time that we didnt understand him. i dont think the players did either. or the rest of the rfc or the afl world for that matter. i mean the possum poo in his office, must have been some brilliant strategy that no one else really understood. i am sure in time (perhaps after we are all dead) he will be seen as the master he obviously was.

Clearly our definitions of beauty are worlds apart.:thumbsdown:

Is it April 1st and I forget to check the date?

Didn't Spud learn everything he knew from working under Tony Shaw!!!

http://www.myspace.com/dannyfrawley

Is this thread a master-bait? :D
Yup! Crumden, a well-liked and respected member and poster on BF is telling porkies.

Here are the facts.

Frawley coached Richmond 2000-20004.

Ross Lyon
Lyon began his coaching career as an assistant to Robert Walls at Richmond in 1996, but moved to Carlton in 2000.

(He has actually worked alongside David Parkin, John Worsfold, Denis Pagan and Paul Roos.)

Crocker
Kicked out with Frawley's departure (says it all doesnt it?:p). Got the North gig by default. Has proved nothing and there are others tipped to get the gig next year anyway.

Knights

Was not assistant to Frawley at any stage.
He assisted Kevin Sheedy while coaching the Bendigo Bombers.

Campbell has also been mentioned, yet he has never held a senior coaching position in his life, NOR is favored to do so next season.

VERDICT: Master-bait :)

Spud pinched that from Neil Daniher! :D
Yeah but its in the delivery where a man makes it his signature.

Frawley could deliver it in such a way that you felt that you were coached by a bumpkin who had no idea what he was doing and should be coaching under 12s up in the country.

Could have you cringeing when

describing a fine as - 'My kids wont be eating this week'
Coaching finals - 'Im still wet behind the ears'

Ive never realised how DUMB the bloke looks when he smiles on television.

Having said that Neale Daniher looked a bit out of his depth in interviews and didnt always impress Melbourne fans who liked a bit more intellectual in thier coach.

Have you broken this news to Bojangles.:D

But maybe your right. With Lyon out of the equation, it may be too soon to make the call that spud was a master coach.
