Still a stupid and unnecessary thing to do and this is partly the AFL's fault for never stamping out such behaviour. As seen here all it takes is for a player to slip or make an unpredictable movement and a serious injury can occur. Have never liked the look of players punching each other to put their opponent off.

EDIT: Or the pushing and shoving for that matter which from the footage I saw led to this.
I totally agree. Punches need to be stamped out.

As said there was no replay at the ground. The commentators had no idea on tv at first until a replay as it was well off the ball.

From the ground it just appeared as though Freo had decided to target Gaff to unsettle him and get into his shoulder. Seemed all too late - 50 points down ok now let's get into him. It seemed quite laughable, where was this intent earlier when the game mattered. So the crowd sees Gaff getting pillored and gets behind him as you would. I thought it was piss week of the Freo players until word filtered around and I checked the replay on my phone. Definitley sat down in my seat after that

If it was clear what he had done I'm sure the reaction wouldn't be quite as pronounced.
I'm not sure of other posters but my confusion is those same commentators say on the vision " the freo players have either seen a replay or been made aware of it " within seconds of the incident

Keep on sooking flog, we all know your trying to get your time in the sunshine with a crappy season and failure year on year. This kind of event brings out all the glory seekers in your fanbase trying to get some sympathy and making out Freo is relevant again.

Police have been involved with on field incidents across different levels of the game. Its up to the player or club to register a formal complaint, police investigate and forward to the DPP who decide whether or not there is sufficient grounds pursuant to the crimes act WA to take the matter to court.
That's not quite correct.

The DPP can advise police whether or not they should lay charges, based on their opinion of achieving successful conviction, they don't have full prosecutorial discretion. In the end it's up to WaPol.

so from this thread we can conclusively say that Gaff's punishment will range somewhere between 0 weeks and a life sentence/being banned from AFL
By the AFL's own rules it should start at 3 weeks. That's insufficient and it will go straight to the tribunal. This sort of incident just cannot be dealt with by the MRO matrix.

If the AFL tribunal judge the incident on its merits, apply precedent of recent incidents (Bugg the most similar, Jordan Lewis similar with lower impact, even Houli which was a bit different) then they'll probably come up with a suspension of about 6 weeks. How much stock they put in Gaff's clean record and any 'I didn't mean to hit him in the head' defence remains to be seen, but in any case it's not a factor that is going to get 6 down to 3 or 8 down to 4 etc.

If the AFL tribunal bow to the pressure of the court of public opinion he could get 10+.

WCE have highlights of the brawl on their website.
Im not sure any other club would do that...
very strange
Relating to the social media team,

Freo hang their hat on the "demolition derby" from 2000, and that involved big punches from half a dozen dockers players. Dale Kickett copped 9 weeks for 2 king hits and a haymaker and Fremantle glorify that game on a year basis like some coming of age thing.

Freo highlights that game pretty much everytime a derby comes around, and then some. King hits, concussions, cuts, missing teeth you name it

In no way am I defending Gaffs actions, I'm extremely disappointing by them in fact. Gaff was a ******* idiot and he deserves what he gets and I feel desperately sorry for Brayshaw. I also completely understand the outrage from Dockers fans and fanatics but the high horsing that's going is pretty silly.

Every AFL clubs social media team is the same, even Freos website carries the same exact video. Have a mad go at Gaff, no problem there but people are now trying to draw parallels between administration staff and social media managers to the action of a players, stupid, selfish one. It's just pointless axe grinding now

0 weeks?

Just came to this thread - and wow 70 pages?
What's the consensus on here, how many weeks?
We have the eagles standard line 4-5 weeks

Then you have the asshats locking him up and throwing away the key.

Majority lying somewhere I'm the middle at 7-9 weeks I'd say. It's a great read got some dockers hatred, magnificent eagles deflection as well as plenty of butbut Barry and Bugg r bad guys though talk.

If Gaff is leaving I would have thought this is the perfect opportunity for West Coast fans to wash their hands and say never liked the guy, poor character etc....
Only problem is no one knows if he is leaving and to this point he's been the squeakiest of squeaky clean players. He barely even gives away free kicks let alone gets reported!

Support the player, condemn the action.

They should for mine. It's not like he was retaliating.

we can keep squabbling but we all know deep down that Brayshaw isn't going to press charges, the matter will go to the tribunal, and he'll get somewhere in the vicinity of 8 weeks

Freo fans defended Nyhuis for knocking out Gray and blamed Gray for not protecting himself.

It's the same vein of thinking.
2 things there:
1. Pretty sure most Freo fans openly called for 2 week ban, more depending on injury report. Accepted it was a bad tackle and needed a ban. Severity played a part in it being more than 2 given he was off and potentially missing the week after. But 3 was fair all things considered. 4 if he had to miss a couple of games.
2. Tackling with the ball is part of the game, punching off the ball is not so it is fundamentally different.

Take a step back to understand the meaning of the article to which it states that the police will often look at the governing body.........they will often defer to that sporting organisation and respect its autonomy to run its own affairs. Which doesn't imply or state - the police will ALWAYS or NEVER.

Separate the emotion from the incident and put things into perspective with what I responded to another poster earlier with;
I'm not being emotional. Accusing me of being so is a convenient way of dismissing my post, however.

It's a lot less emotional to say we're in agreement, apparently, isn't it?
