And once that happens where does it end? Technically Vlaustin's elbow on Parker was an assault. Burton earlier during the year. Cameron on Andrews. We live in such a litigious society I fear once the first person is criminally charged for something that occurs on the AFL field, the flood gates will open and drawing a line between was is a chargeable offence vs something that isn't will become increasingly difficult.
Players consent to a significant level of violence by taking the field, which would likely include those incidents you mention, and dangerous tackles. Chargeable offences that clearly go beyond this consent (e.g. a king hit) would happen extremely rarely at AFL level, so it wouldn't open a can of worms to prosecute such incidents. It's happened for incidents in amateur games, and when it comes to such things, there should be no legal difference between the AFL and lower leagues.

174 games without incident.

I mean we're talking about a guy who is criticised for being a soft front runner. Not really known for being Mr Physical.

Willie Rioli for example has played 18 games and has already given away more frees than Gaff has in any season. He plays close to the edge and has given away some dumb 50m penalties etc. I have little doubt at some point he'll cross the line and get suspended. Other players are niggly, others still are prone to brain snaps. I don't think it would be that hard to goad James Sicily into punching you, for example.

Every team has players that are physical, players that are antagonists etc. Gaff to this point has never been either - which is why the whole thing is such a shock.

The whole 'character' thing is all up to the point of the incident, though. You run out of good bloke points when you punch someone. If Gaff is reported for something relatively minor in future he'll see be Andrew 'left hook' Gaff,
I mean....really?
Once a thug always a thug right.
How is this any different to anyone else hitting someone apart from 'serial thugs'.
No difference for mine...he is called out on the action alone and the consequences.
This crap about his 'history' is a load of rubbish!

And you're basing that on??
Straight up coward punch and deserves everything he gets.

Truly ******* bizarre that he of all people did it though, was a nice bloke with an extremely high IQ at school.

Brain fade of truly stunning proportions.
That gamer rage.

But seriously though, it shows even legit nerds are not immune from a brain fade.

It won’t affect the eagles grand final chances, as they had no chance before this. Even though they are second on the ladder, they seem to be the weakest second team ever. Can’t play outside of WA.
We've won all our games in Victoria this year, including both at the MCG.

In any event I think there's not much more in this thread to add, not sure why this hasn't been sent to the Umpiring, MRP and Rules board yet.

It might hasten Gaff's departure for a Victorian club though.

From the footage Brayshaw lent/fell forward toward Gaff just as Gaff swung his arm. Had he not moved it would have collected him in the chest not the jaw. So Gaff definitely meant to make contact (no one should dispute that), he just didn't mean to make contact with the jaw.
I agree, I am firmly in the camp of he intended to hit him but didnt intend to hit him in the face. It is quite obvious in the vision that Brayshaw's body position lowers significantly at almost the exact same time Gaff swing's his arm.

When he starts swinging his arm they are both upright, when he connects with the hit, Brayshaw is bent at the knee and his head is probably 30cm lower than it was a split second earlier.

That doesn't excuse it at all and he will pay the price for even throwing the punch in the first place, and the dumbest part of all, it was such a hard hit that even if he hit him in the body he was probably going to get a week!

Bringing history in show that AFL had not done enough about throwing punches
Good Blokes or thug throwing Punches are wrong .
Was celebrated by many in the media.

As was Hall.
Not sure Hall was 'celebrated' but this is why I highlighted it.

The footy media is full of buffoons who giggle when Scarlett punches Ballantyne, but the moment someone throws a punch and some damage is done they all lose their minds and completely change their tune.

Well I would take him at Collingwood any day of the week.

Was a dog act but I feel he didn't actually mean to hit him in the face, his tried to whack him high up in the chest and just missed.

He was clearly pretty upset by it all and hasn't ever shown a dirty act in his 18 years of footy.

Will get 7 weeks.

Well I'm telling you I had no idea, you can call me a liar if you like but it won't alter what my experience was.
I won't call you a liar mate, I'll take you on your word

What I will say is there would've been many fans at the game with earphones listening to 6pr or ABC live coverage, and they would be telling those around them.

Still the same no matter how media change their tune , Gaff physically harm a player . Can't forever blame somebody else for your action .

so from this thread we can conclusively say that Gaff's punishment will range somewhere between 0 weeks and a life sentence/being banned from AFL
Didn't realise this was the place to be a smart ass (considering a kid got his jaw smashed in)...if that's the case I think he deserves more than life!!

Looking at the way Brayshaw's head moved, I have come to the conclusion that there was a second puncher, hiding in the bushes on a grassy knoll.

I think people need to chill with the assassination-level of hysterics. Gaff had a brain fade and am sure he is very remorseful. I am sure the tribunal will give an appropriate punishment and I am sure he will cop the whack and ask to be forgiven.

Be a better person and forgive him, we are flawed beings and make mistakes, lets not lynch him as he has otherwise been a clean player.
But what about Brayshaw. You know, the bloke who’s jaw he broke?

Hall was condemned in every corner of the media. This guy has no clue.

"Pst, Gaff apparently broke Brayshaw's jaw, pass it on".

There were 57,000 people there so it may take a while for word to get around, especially if it wasn't shown on the big screens. I don't condone any person cheering that news (which there probably were, let's be honest, there are nuffies in every football crowd) but it is a bit harsh to tar everyone who cheered Gaff after the goal with the same brush.

I had no idea either.

We have the eagles standard line 4-5 weeks

Then you have the asshats locking him up and throwing away the key.

Majority lying somewhere I'm the middle at 7-9 weeks I'd say. It's a great read got some dockers hatred, magnificent eagles deflection as well as plenty of butbut Barry and Bugg r bad guys though talk.
consensus is about 8 weeks, but some weirdos reckon its zero while others think its a life sentence
Cheers lads, I think it's reasonable to estimate 8 or 8+. Hall on Staker was 7, but Staker was able to play again in the subsequent fortnight. AFL.com says Brayshaw is out for the season, and can't eat solids for a month. Also considering the AFL/Tribunal rely heavily on the injury outcome vis-a-vis their determination these days, it's going to be a heavy one.
