Well if you really want to go there Hall managed to get a hit 50 metres off the ball deemed in play so he could play in a grand final the next week.
Under a set of rules that were changed over a decade ago. How is that relevant?

The situation with the media is getting out of hand now. Guy punches a guy in the face on a footy field, causes significant damage, give him his penalty and be done with it. Why am I reading about WA police and a lady from the education department getting involved? FFS people make mistakes and do stupid things. Here we go with the "It should never happen again" statements. But it will happen again, because people do stupid things all the dam time! I almost feel sorry for Gaff. The way this is going, time next week, he'll be extradited to Guantanamo bay for an act of terrorism.

Anybody over east have any doubts about the lack of class of West Coast supporters? Watching the game today and hearing their fans cheering on a thug who sucker-punched a young kid behind the play, sending him to hospital in the process, really says it all. Stay classy, West Coast supporters!!
You do realise that there were no replays of the incident at the ground and that most Eagles fans at the game didn't see it until after the game.

Or are you unburdened by the need to think based on facts?

its the dying screeches of an irrelevant industry, year after year they get more and more tabloid-esque

genuinely, do you even need training to be a sports journo? they just seem to write sensationalist pieces, ask the exact same questions every presser, and speculate wildly about contracts

Not a great look for the game but the hoo-ha that's ensued is bordering on embarrassing now. Anyone calling for criminal charges need a stiff uppercut themselves
Worse event happened in the NRL about 6 weeks ago and nobody said boo. And it wasn't one punch. It was a guy pounding the bejeezus out of another guys eye. No police, charges or people from the education department mentioned at all.

"Could Gaff go to JAIL FOREVER?!?"

"Ross, what did you think about the loss did you enjoy losing or is it maybe something your players need to improve on?"

"Rory Slone is gonna go to Melbounre for 43 years and earn a zillion dollars! Adelaide cannot match it!"

Not explicitly, but I think Hall would have got a significantly longer sentence had that incident happened recently. The whole competition is far more aware of the seriousness and longer term implications of punches to the head.
And yet we are seeking to punish Gaff for breaking a jaw which is far LESS serious than concussions. And we've seen a few punches resulting in concussions getting 2-4 weeks max...

Is the emotional over play because some folks saw blood and Brayshaw is young? Both pretty irrelevant in terms of the punishment warranted.

It's quite possible that that was Gaff's last game in Eagles colours. But IMO his contributions to Eagles victories may not have ended. When the Dockers shit the bed as they have done again in 2018, the derbies become their grand final. One thing the Gaff feeding frenzy has done is taken all the focus away from another piss-weak Fremantle performance on the field. If Ross Lyon is still somehow coaching that team in 2019 that is a nice boost to west coast's chances of getting another 8 points.

I agree that it's not Adam Simpson's fault Freo players wanted retribution. What I am saying is that a reasonable person could foresee this happening and Simpson is a reasonable guy. He knew Gaff was going to be targeted like no-one else in the last 10 years and he was in a position to defuse the situation. The four points were never at stake.
If Gaff was kept off the ground, your mob, rightly or wrongly would probably be calling him out for cowardice. Part of his whack is taking the opposition punishment for the team and he did that.

A QC who deals with criminal assault and (I think) assaults on the footy pitch had some interesting comments on SEN about 20 minutes ago. From memory:

- Said without a question was an assault. Says the suspension should be 12 to 24 months.
- Said the police can lay charges without Brayshaw's assistance. The video is enough to do that.
- Said he defends people regularly on assault charges and this is as clean cut an example as you will find.
- Said intent is immaterial. You swing the fist and you bear the consequences, regardless of what you thought may happen.
- Said the fact that the assault occurred on the field during a match is immaterial. Assault is not one of the risks you reasonably assume when playing the game.

IMO it would've been weak to bench Gaff for a quarter. And would've left us down a rotation. Would be frustrating if Shuey or Redden or someone did a late soft tissue injury because Gaff was on the bench fully fit.

I like the fact that Simpson sent him back out there and Gaff kept playing knowing he had a target on his back. He knew by the time he was on the bench that his season was probably over and played the game out. People are critical of his teammates and fans for supporting him at the end but they weren't celebrating the hit.
Weaker than belting someone in the face when they're not expecting it and breaking their jaw?

Yowzers.
Did he give predicted jail sentences for everyone else suspended by the tribunal this year?
