Last night when Jarryn Geary was presented with the No.14 Jumper the announcer mentioned that it was the number of the great Jimmy O'Dea.

Was this a double dig at Collingwood? No mention of Luke Ball and we all know the animosity held by Collingwood toward O'Dea and the Greening incident.

Personally I think it was a very pointed FU to Collingwood, Ball the mercenary, and all the BS and spin they put on his leaving.

Not mentioning Ball and mentioning O'Dea was very pointed.

You would have to assume that it was calculated in so far as Ball is still a current player, simply at another club so there is no need to honour him as an "ex-champion" of the club. There may have been some entiment to stick it up Collingwood but I would assume this would be minimal due to the professionalism of the clubs.

I wasn't a big fan of (holding the) Ball anyway.

I was.

His body may not allow him to be the player he was (and his talent would allow him to be), but one could never question his commitment and toughness on the field.

But I have to say that I was not very happy with the way he orchestrated his departure. But then again I don't know all the background info and I was also not too happy with the way the club publicly put him in a corner (but I fully support Lyon's processing of the matter, the club is bigger than any player).

Ayway, he is gone. Geary (and Armitage and Steven) are our future, Luke Ball is not.

I'm 100% with you there Holden.

But now that he's gone & Feralwood supporters have turned this into an issue. A swipe at Ball is a free swipe at Feralwood.

So, from me, here comes an old fashion bitch slappin' FW ...

My mate had an old reel to reel tape of a Doug Heywood call of a Pies game which he used to play over and over to me in the 70's.........."Greening picks up the ball at half forward......OH WHAT A MAGNIFICENT SNAPSHOT BY GREEEEENNNNING!!!!!!!" Then I would get a tirade about O'Dea etc. etc. He never let it go. Still alive in 2010. Ahh the memories.

o'dea DID play 25 more games than ball for the sainters so it's a dig but also a justified one.
i'm not that stats obsessed but maybe o'dea has played the most games ever in the #14 for the saints?????

O'Dea played all bar his first season in #14, so would have played almost all his 167 games in that number.

Lockett kicked 127 goals and won a Brownlow in 1987 wearing #14.

Bruce Phillips played 115 games in #14 between 1947-55.

Classy stuff from the announcer.

Might want to find a new one if he keeps going for the cheap gag about someone being put in a coma.

Obviously Lockett would have been the sensible choice. No problem with Ball being considered the enemy.

All clubs are guilty of this type of rubbish, but wish they weren't.

reminds of a joke I heard the other day :

A St Kilda fan boarding a plane finds out he's seated between two Collingwood supporters. Aiming to get through the flight quickly, he takes off his shoes and tries to sleep when one of the Collingwood guys says that he wants a beer. Keen to avoid trouble, the St Kilda man offers to get it from the galley.

Once he's gone, the Collingwood supporter spits into his shoes. The other Pies fan sees this and proceeds to also ask for a drink and spit into the Saints man's shoes.

Close to landing, the Sainter puts his shoes on and immediately realises what has happened. He sighs and asks

"is it really necessary ?"

"all this hatred ?"

"all this rubbish ?"

"all this spitting into shoes and pissing into drinks ?"

:o

The Announcer should have went with that one. :D

I may have misread the OP but I don't see where it was said the announcer mentioned Greening at all!

You may have taken what us posters have presumed was inferred by the mention of O'Dea.

I'd only heard the jew/arab version. But I prefer this one. :D

The handling of this whole situation has been a disgrace and a poor reflection on St.Kilda and its leaders.

Luke Ball gave his all for the club (and has shown great integrity and class by not commenting) - the comments by Nick Riewoldt and Ross Lyon are at best petty, at worst-are vindictive,a poor cover up to save face about getting nothing for him, and a diversion from the Lovett debacle.

To hang the kid out to dry, drop him, give him minimal game time, then claim he has walked out on them just showed a lack of class. I have no problem with his handling- If he is not doing what Lyon wants then he should be dropped. My problem is with the "walk out" comments.

Hayes should have always been captain.

how can you have a problem with that - luke ball walked out on st kilda for a myriad of reasons. he could have stayed but chose not to.

Luke Ball gave his all for the club

By not accepting a 3 year contract (before he got dropped to the VFL)?

the comments by Nick Riewoldt and Ross Lyon

I must have missed where Luke Ball was made available for interview.

a diversion from the Lovett debacle.

ya, OK knackers.

To hang the kid out to dry

How old are you? Was Bally bullied too?

give him minimal game time,

He got as much as Lenny Hayes, and more than David Armitage who was starring in the VFL.

Hayes should have always been captain.

Yeah - instead of Ball

C'mon krusden.

It could have been done much better. Everyone knows Luke was up against with Lyon- 99% of footballers would have done the same as Luke.

Don't you think he deserved better than to be labelled a traitor?

You are reacting the same as the 2 "leaders". Why get aggressive about it? Bottom line is he deserved better than the recent comments. You agree?

well no. for example Nick riewoldt could have gotten more ca$h elsewhere (see GC17) but signed with the saints, how many offers did richo get over the years yet he stayed with the tigers?

99% of footballers would have stayed. Ball falls into the Judd category of $ chasing flogs.

and the "luke vs lyon" thing is bs - IMO lyon told luke some home truths that he needed to hear (that he was behind hayes, that his role may have been limited, that he was gonna have to accept a pay cut) and ball sooked and went to a club that will blow smoke up his ar!e.

Yeah some valid points there. Not sure you can use Riewoldt staying as an example of Balls decision. Riewoldt would not have been offered a pay cut (the opposite!) and his role wouldn't have been diminished. I think Ball genuinely felt at risk of being a VFL player.

I have no problem with St.Kilda's handling of Ball in a player sense. My issue is painting him as a traitor that had no reason to leave when there were classier options. Hard to stay when the coach clearly doesn't rate you.

They look like the bad guy. They could have stayed with the line of wishing him all the best, he was a loyal servent, now he is an opposition player blah blah blah.

Aggressive? I thought I was being more pleasant than usual.

So your response to the "aggressive" questioning by the media (on why we let Luke Ball "go") is?

BTW - you obviously didn't watch much of the Saints in 2009, so here is our player of the year voting :

30: Lenny Hayes
25: Leigh Montagna
20: Nick Dal Santo
16: Brendon Goddard, Nick Riewoldt
8: Sam Gilbert
7: Justin Koschitzke
6: Farren Ray
5: Adam Schneider
3: Jason Gram, Steven Baker
2: Clinton Jones, David Armitage, Samuel Fisher
1: Jarryn Geary, Zac Dawson, Michael Gardiner, Stephen Milne, Raphael Clarke
