Watch AFL from overseas

I'm living in London and am probably going to pay for one of the WCE Global membership or the AFL Global Pass.

From reading this thread though it sounds like using the foxtel go pass and re-routing your IP is worth a shot as well if you're a cheap skate like me.

Also people asking about internet steams and the like I managed to watch all the finals using firstrowsportes.eu although this site specifically has turned to shit as of late. I manage to stream most of the EPL and other football games I want over here to avoid paying for Sky and BT (which is absolutely ridiculous prices, around 80-100 GBP a month so no point crying about AFL prices).

Will be interested to see if i can find any free illegal streams for this season but will be watching the NAB pre season games using the watch afl trial and see how it goes.

scrap that because channel 504 Fox Footy for some absolutely ridiculous reason cannot be watched on Foxtel Go on a PC (only tablet or phone).

What a load of balls

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a way to watch the footy from oversea.
Can't get it on TV and the afl.com.au website only lets you access to replays if you are within Australia.
Up till now now I have been signing up to watchafl.afl.com.au, but every year they are raising the prices and doesn't always work very well.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a torrent website or something of the sort.. so that I will be able to get the games every week.

thanks in advance to all the helpers!
FREO FANATICS has a youtube channel that has replays, AFL360 etc on it.

Watch it every night when away from Australia.

You can occasionally find dodgy pirate streams online for AFL, but the quality is (or used to be) pretty average and they're full of those annoying popups. Not worth the trouble.
Last year I had a free AFL Live Pass (which was Telstra, I think now Optus). This can be accessed from overseas if you use a geo-dodger (I use unotelly). I tried it last year and but the quality was terrible, unwatchable. It could be my location (Germany)... best bet would be to sign up for a free trial and see how you go.

I signed up to watchafl.afl.com.au again - despite the frustration it's better than the alternatives. It seems they try some new technology every year and it takes three quarters of the season to fix it. last year for me it would at about 10 minutes into the 3rd quarter it would start looping back to the half time break, and the only way to get past it was to watch the half time break... eventually it would catch up at some point in the last quarter. Their support team blamed the ipad and they couldn't change it... despite not having this problem with any other streaming service... anyway...

The price for watchafl.afl.com.au does change per region (depending on switching between USD/EUR and probably GBP). I found the cheapest option was to take out a club membership that includes the watchafl subscription (for me, it was a Global Lion subscription... $165). All clubs offer it and depending on who you support the price will be more or less (probably depends on what crap "supporter package" they throw in -Hawks do one for $173, St. Kilda do one for $155, Geelong/Essendon $150). I assume the club at least gets some money from this too.
Compare this to $153USD (over $210AUD) or 109€ ($170AUD) to subscribe directly via watchafl.

I found that I have less problems with watchafl when watching via a computer, and can also watch via the inbuilt browser on my samsung TV. it does sometimes freeze or drop in quality, but restarts and runs pretty well. Fingers crossed it works better on ipad this year.

One more option: if you know anyone who has a Foxtel subscription with Fox Footy, check if they'll lend you (or rent to you) their Foxtel Go access. You also need a geo-dodging method, but could work. Unfortunately doesn't work if they get Foxtel via Optus (otherwise this is the method I would use!!).

Yeah, I remember that half-time time warp issue. Used to drive me crazy since I had the iPad hooked up to the TV via a HDMI cable. I'd usually just go sit in front of the PC to watch the second half, which was never as good, since watching in the browser only lets you watch a small sized video or watch it full screen (which was grainy and choppy). I'd enjoy it more in the browser if they make it work like Netflix where it fills the browser (without going full screen) and then adjusts itself as you re-size the window to a more watchable size.

This year I have a Chromecast and use the Google Cast extension to cast the full screen video from a Chrome tab and it's actually been fantastic quality so far. They've also improved their Android app in recent times. It was unusable for me on my Nexus 7 a year or two ago, but is pretty solid at the moment.

vipbox.tv usually works very well, its a free streaming site with virtually every pro sporting event in the world pretty well covered.

On a different note, does anyone know what the coverage is like in NZ? I'm going to be moving there around July. I've heard that most games are live on one of the pay tv sports channels.

I currently watch with a laptop connected to my tv via HDMI cable (same as last year). I'm not sure what they've done this year... the image quality is great, but the video doesn't seem to flow correctly... like it's speeds up/slows down constantly. results in an almost imperceptible stutter in the action. still watchable, but a little annoying. (EDIT: I found everything works perfectly in Edge browser, but not so well in firefox). The website no longer renders properly via the samsung browser, so i can't seem to get the match directly via the TV anymore.
Still better than it was!!

I just noticed Freo Fanatics Youtube channel has been taken down. After only just finding it I'm dissapointed it's gone! Does anyone have an alternative?

Bloody hell.

If you've got a good internet connection, then watchafl.com.au (Global Pass) is the way to go for watching live games. It's expensive but well worth the $. I first started using it in 2012 and its quality has improved every year to the point where it's pretty much flawless now.

I have no idea how I'll watch AFL 360 and the like now though.

Exactly my thought.

The latest improvement this year is that during breaks between quarters instead of showing a highlights package from the previous year that is cool but gets old fast, they show individual highlights packages of matches from the previous week.

The only big problem this service has is they often have some finals spoilers.

Last year I was excited to watch West Coast vs North in the prelim, only for them to have up the GF schedule as Hawthorn vs West Coast...

With regard to the club global memberships, how exactly does this work? Does purchasing one of these provide login details to access the "Watch AFL Global" service? (I ask as I have had such an account for a couple of years, and if possible would like to avoid having to add another username/password combination to the long list of username/password combinations cluttering up my brain.)

The club will send you a voucher code that you then add to your Watch AFL account, whatever that may be.

It's super simple. I did the whole process minutes before the opening bounce of the first game I watched and all good.

Note that you may have to prompt the club to send you the code like I did this year with Melbourne.

How long does it take to get the code? I bought mine (West Coast) yesterday and still nothing. Thought it would take a few minutes if anything.

I wanted to bump this thread. Has anyone noticed that the WatchAFL app when overseas uses a truckload of data. I mean I'm talking I watched Port V Carlton and the game took somewhere around 6-7 GB only watching live play and skipping the breaks. Couldn't believe it.

There are times when you just can't access WiFi, and so I've been using a phone SIM I got in Italy with 10GB of data available across the whole of the EU, and if I watch a game it takes basically all my data. In Oz I always found the AFL Live app would use no more than maybe 500Mb-1Gb for an entire game.
