Hey fellas

just got back from the US, and what intrigued me was the popularity of sports bars over there compared to here, where we are supposed to be 'sports mad.' I tell you what, the bars over there had great atmosphere I loved going there, even tho Basketball bores the hell out of me!

Any ideas as to why there arnt more sports related bars over here? Any recommendations to any good ones in Melbourne?

I think it's because Americans like talking about sport. Aussies just seem to like drinking beer, picking up chicks, and, if all else fails, fighting somebody. Usually an opposition supporter.

"Gee, Jimmy Hird can play a bit can't he?"

"Shut Up you twit - Buckley buries him."

"Bullsh!t idiot. Shut your mouth."

"Don't tell me what to do d~ckhead"

"Why whadaya gonna do?"

"That's it. You're f~cked."

And so on....... :(

(And don't tell me you've never seen it happen!!!!!!!! :) )

Hmmmm - yeah Sports Bars

They have certainly been tried (and tried again) in Australia but they are not popular.

There is one down the road form me at the Fox Studios complex, just next door to the SCG and its usually empty, even if there is something worthwhile to watch on the screens....

Maybe its because the atomsphere in these places is so fake and contrived. The decor is all Locker-Room hip, there are huge screens everywhere, usually playing American or International sports of minor interest to Australians.

They are usually impossibly noisy, huge, souless places where it is impossible to get any kind of intimate and comforting atomsphere going. The sports memorabilia all over the walls are dumb and tacky.

Drinking in a Sports Bar is a bit like eating at Hard Rock Cafe or Planet Hollywood.

The experience is shallow, contrived and leaves one with a slightly hollow and 'ripped off' feeling, like you have just participated in some kind of mass marketing exercise rather than a drink in a public bar.

Does not compare very well with drinking in a 'normal' Aussie pub which might be less than salubrious, but at least it feels like a genuine experience.

Yankee-style "Sports Bars" suck IMHO.

cheers

The Aussie sports bar ...

Saturday arvo ... smoke-filled front bar on a street corner in Newtown or somewhere. No shielas. No ****ters. No wogs or reffos. Blokes in blue singlets with a schooner in one hand and a cigarette in the other (Capstan or Craven A ... cork-tipped, of course). The races on the wireless. Resch's on tap. An SP bookie taking bets in the barber shop next door. Six o'clock closing.

They could even have a kind of trough at floor level around the bar so that when the pub's about to close and all the blokes in blue singlets are frantically trying to get as many beers into them as possible before the pub closes, they can just piss into the trough so they don't have to lose their place at the bar. It also makes it easy for the publican to hose away all the spew and piss at the end of the day.

Interesting idea. Could be quite marketable, don't you think? Maybe we could get some American entrepreneur to open up a chain of them. What d'ya reckon?

Adrenalin Sports Bar, in Brisbane. Above an Irish pub, the obligatory memorabilia, 2 huge screens on opposite walls, tv's all over the place, bars, bistro and dancefloor, pool tables and coin operated 'rides' like motorcycles, and skiing machines etc etc.

On non-sports nights, is a pretty good nightclub, and is always full to the brim when there is a sporting occasion.

Had a great night there early last year, Lions v North AC, on one big screen, Rugby League on the other one, 2 sets of supporters made for a great atmosphere.

Anyway they seem to be doing pretty well with that bar up here.
