yep intermittent fasting is boss.
gonna start my water fast tonight. Aiming for 3 days.

It's funny this topic has come up, I'm currently on day two and aiming for 5-7 days which will be my longest yet. Much sure you supplement salt and in some cases magnesium.

heck the h8rs! Welcome to life on easy mode.

Really starting to doubt your eastern block heritage :drunk:

What parameters are you going to set yourself? If you start to struggle can you sip on a black tea or are you going full legit?

Was really just gonna go for 2-3L of regular unfiltered water a day, no black tea or coffee, no powerade, no supplements

You know who's a big fan of fasting? Pete Evans.

perthblue , you started yet? I reckon during the week would be easiest, start Tuesday/Wednesday and do it with a reward in mind when you finish. Maybe a coffee just to dehydrate you even further :thumbsu:

nah decided to do it when I return from
melby, didnt wanna fast while I was here and walking around heaps and wanting to eat delicious food and daintily sip lattes on lygon st

It all comes down to being realistic about what you can do. I know that I can't stick to a low carb diet and I love having pints on the weekend so no alcohol is unrealistic. Monday to Friday not eating for 16 hours is realistic for me. Eat dinner at 7 or 8pm and then eat lunch and dinner. You're asleep for most of that time and if I'm busy at work I don't think too much about it. I'll sometimes have some black tea if I'm struggling.
16 hour would work better from 4pm till 8am. I think a person could stretch it to 20 hours ie 12 lunch.

The 4pm start gives your body time to digest before you sleep. Though this could be impacted by work etc.

Along with walking and not eating after 6pm ( till breakfast) I lost a good amount of weight.

I pretty much dont do diets.

A workmate is doing the 5-2 diet 5 days normal 2 days fasting well on limited amount of food I think 500/600 cals.
I asked him what did you have for tea? Soup I ask with bread he said no.I say thats not a meal, soup with bread thats a meal.

Can't believe 2 years has passed since I started this thread, and have only now attempted a water fast.

65 hours into an attempted 72 hour water fast and am considering breaking it early.

Will write up a full report for those interested tonight.

Most success I've had doing this is to make sure i'm fat adapted before attempting a prolonged fast, otherwise you will be suffering from pretty nasty withdrawals. I've been doing 1-2 day fasts over the past 2 years. Currently down 45kg, getting stronger etc. Make sure your nutrition is fine outside of the fasts and it's pretty easy.

Where’s the report bro

Background: have done intermittent fasting on and off for a couple years, usually 20:4 (20 hour fast with 4 hour eating window) or one meal a day, where I'll just eat one meal at 6pm and won't eat until the same time next day.

Decided to attempt a slightly longer fast, 3 days/72 hours. I did it for 3 reasons: to 'reset' my body/immune system after I had been treating it poorly, for the mental clarity/alertness, and to get a grip on what I believe is a junk food addiction.

Now I had already made a mistake from the get go. My weekend was filled with beers and junk food and my last meal was KFC. I believe I would have been better served eating low carb / perhaps also intermittent fasting in the lead up to my water fast, as my cravings were off the charts for the whole fast and it made it much more difficult.

Day 1:

Ate my last meal somewhere around 4:30pm Sunday and commenced my water fast from 5:00pm.

Sunday night goes by unremarkably, I didn't feel hungry really.

I slept quite poorly though, and waking up Monday morning my stomach was GROWLING. I usually never eat breakfast so it was odd for me to be so hungry. I showered, drank some coffee, and about half a litre of water and I felt ok.

Got worse as the day went on. My mood was low, I was irritable, I had cravings. I had a small burst of energy in the evening when I did a workout then showered and sat reading a book while drinking black coffee, felt very good for 2 hours but as it got closer to bedtime I crashed a bit and felt irritable and restless. I came very close to ordering a pizza at this juncture but instead I just drank heaps of water and went to bed early. Had a slightly better but still not full sleep.

Day 2:

Woke up Tuesday feeling sluggish but not hungry. Had a workout, shower, and 2 black coffees and felt great. This was a good day for me. My mental clarity and alertness were high, my energy levels were high, I was in a great mood.

Then later in the night, as I approached bedtime, I got a headache and started feeling a bit lethargic.

I read that people drink salted water during longer fasts for the electrolytes, its not really necessary on a 3 day fast but I drank some anyway and it helped a bit with the headaches, but I still felt quite shitty. Went to bed a bit later than usual and had a terrible sleep.

Day 3:

Woke up feeling like I wanted to vomit and quite weak. Thought I would definitely get up and break my fast immediately. But as I started moving around, showered, and had some coffee, and lots of water, I started feeling a bit better and decided I'd push on.

This was the day my hunger and cravings came back tenfold. I'm guessing the knowledge that I would be eating later that day might have had some effect. As the afternoon wore on the hunger pangs/empty stomach feeling got worse and worse.

I broke the fast at 2pm, after 69 hours of fasting. 3 hours short of my goal. The reason for this is because I had to attend an event last minute and if I hadnt broken my fast then I would have had to wait until 8 or 9 o'clock. I am still very pleased with my efforts and know I can do it next time I attempt it.

What I learned:

  • as mentioned, I did myself no favours in the lead up to the fast. Next time I attempt this I will eat low carb, minimal sugar and do IF in the days leading up to the fast. Junk food/alcohol makes things unnecessarily tougher.
  • I have no doubt that the reason I felt shitty on Tuesday evening and Weds morning is because I did not hydrate enough during the day on Tuesday. I felt so good that I got lax with my water consumption.
  • I'm not gonna lie, I spent too much time on both Monday and Tues evening looking up recipes and browsing /r/foodporn. My cravings were crazy and all I could think about was what I was gonna eat on Wednesday. I believe this is because I was idle both evenings and failed at keeping myself busy. It was much easier to fast during the day when I had lots of stuff to do.
  • Besides Tuesday morning and afternoon, I did not get the same level of mental benefits that I usually do with 20:4 fasts. Overall I felt quite poorly.
  • Exercise while fasting feels great.
  • Food has never tasted so good as it did yesterday at 2pm. Had a glass of coconut milk first to break the fast, then a bowl of pumpkin soup, then salmon and broccoli. I hadn't realised just how much I missed flavour.

Overall I did not really get the benefits I hoped for from this fast but that is mostly my fault and I will learn from my mistakes and attempt to do the full 72 hours again in 2 weeks.

I do a couple of 3 day fasts a year (plus a monthly 36 hour fast) and yeah, I'd definitely recommend drinking a glass of salt water each morning and night.

We get a lot of our water intake from food so you do have to be conscious of drinking a lot more than you would normally. When I'm fasting I'll sit down at night and sip a litre of water before bed and I don't even need to use the bathroom during the night, so it shows how much your body needs it.
