Watts

Watching him he just seems hesistant a lot, doesn't look like he has 100% confidence in everything he does. When it comes he'll be great... really looking forward to him having a full, uninterrupted preseason.

First of all, I acknowledge that the conditions today did not suit a young, skinny KPP. Having said that Watts was close to worst on ground today. He avoids body contact at all costs and he got absolutely chopped up one on one time and again. He's going to be good but I think Theresa lot of Josh Fraser about him...

I'll agree with you about avoiding body contact TODAY however over the past 5 or 6 weeks he's been very good and eager at getting to the contest and getting in there but just didn't show that same appetite today.

All a learning experience though I guess.

Also Josh Fraser? Too harsh.

He's clearly not a CHF right now as his body will not allow it. He cannot compete in a 1 on 1 marking contest as he is physically not strong enough. But he hasn't really played CHF since coming into the side.

Having said that, Bailey has played him more as a Forward Flank. There's still no excuse for the performance that he put in today. 6 touches in a game of football is not a good result for Jack. Sure it was wet blah blah blah, but he needs to start putting his body on the line. Too many times he ran under a high ball, or shirked a contest. Hawthorn supporters called him a 'weak pussy' all day today and it drove me nuts as i had no comeback for him.

Watts just needs to look at a kid like Scully for inspiration. Here's a kid who barely weighs more than my ballsack, and he continually puts his body on the line and never shirks a contest. Watts needs to toughen up and grow some hairy balls over summer. I can put up with the kid not kicking any goals or not getting many possies, but i can't stand any player in the red and blue jumper not putting his body on the line. I don't care how old or how skinny you are...

Correct on all fronts.

I just want to see him run back with the flight of the ball and take a strong mark. The good times will roll, just needs to believe he can dominate the contest

He will be a great footballer in a few years, but I agree with what everyone is saying so far.
Needs to but his body on the line and go in for the hard ball.

Hopefully he gets his first full pre-season in over the summer and bulks up a little bit.

I think he is just sooooo close to a breakout game is frustrating, that mark... that goal... just one of them today would have been awesome!!

I watched the game today and their was one point where the ball was right in front of Watts on the ground and he seemed scared to put his head over it. He just watched it for a couple seconds until Lewis slid in hard and won the ball. The OP's right I reckon Watts needs one big hit to realise going in hard won't kill you. Packing on the muscle over pre-season will do wonders for his confidence as well.

When he's at the contest when the ball is on the ground; he's not too bad because he has good hands. It's just that first initial movement to get there.

Bulk has a little bit to do with confidence no doubt, however you can't teach courage. Brad Green has tremendous courage. Not a big bloke, but won't take his eyes off the ball no matter who is coming his way. Watts seems scared of the contact, and this is what I'm afraid of most about Watts in the future.

He has the frame to put on some size, but that won't mean he will gain courage and put his body on the line for our club.

You can develop an appetite for the contest. Watts might not ever be Jordie McKenzie but he can and will improve.

Brad Green wasn't the most courageous bloke when he first came to the club, and was called soft for a few years there.

I just want him to be a leading option out of the goal square. He has the burners to run off the spud defenders he gets.

Agree about the appetite - his work on the wing in front of the members was a show of how good he CAN be, just needs to get it downpat.

i remember when Brad Green was labelled soft, while playing off HBF and wing, probably 4 years ago... he can change, he will change, if you watch his footage in u18's he had no problems with that, its a confidence issue through and through

Perfectly said my man.

I have defended this kid to the hilt against all comers but today he made me and our club look stupid.

I don't care how skinny he is or his minimal number in the games column. He lacks desire and that makes me sick. Even as a skinny kid he is 197cm and above the average weight for an AFL footballer so to fear a hit is to be a coward and Jack might just be one. Scully, Trengove, James Mcdonald etc don't have the height or weight that Jack does but they go in hard for the footy and this is why opposition supporters have a field day with us over Jack.

Today I was left speechless and flattened by the realisation that while he may become a good player, He will never be a star. A star has a natural thirst for the contest and an appetite for the physical side of the game.

Jack possesses neither.

Great kick
Great handball
and that's about it.

The Messiah he ain't

I reckon he needs to work on confidence a lot. He refuses to have a shot at goal, and looks to handpass it off. He is also hesitant going for the ball and presenting. He can take a good mark and is a good kick, but again often chooses a safe option. I reckon Bailey should tell him that he doesn't care and MFC don't care if he kicks a clanger, and his game should be solely evaluated on his amount of possessions. Watts should demand the ball, and present present present. From this he will gain confidence. We know he can use it, he just has to concentrate on getting it.

Your not the only one who felt that way today.

I guess we just want to see some hunger or any little glimpse why he was a number 1 pick. At the moment he just looks tentative and afraid to get hurt.

that annoyed me to no end. If he picked it up and kept possession then good on him but he didn't.

He's a person, not a pre-programmed machine who'll 'come good'. He has all the ability but up until Q4 today he looked like...

Head over the ball Jack, earn your money

You guys jump off pretty quick!!

I don't think I've ever seen a teenager cop as much shit as Watts does... it's as if everyone in the football world (including some of his own fans!!!) want him to fail.

Well I have faith in the kid and have no doubt he'll make it. He's not Glenn Archer and never will be, but neither is Liam Jurrah and he seems to do OK. It's clear as day that he's trying hard out there, 5 tackles today is testament to that.
It was a poor game from Jack today, but it was on the back of 2 months of promising performances.

Agreed, I have been suspicious of Jack in the past, but I think he has shown something this year and there's no reason to get carried away by one bad game. I don't think he'll be scared of the contest forever and I can see him becoming the next Nick Riewoldt if he can build up his frame.
