Which in your opinion was the better innings?

After reading some comments here on the magnificent 140 by Ponting, (which I think is one of the best) I still would put the 120 by Steve Waugh in the last world cup against SA as the better innings.

Ponting had a good head start with the century by Hayden and Gilchrist, the wicket was good for batting with a touch of moisture for the bowlers. Ponting then destroyed a hapless and mediocre Indian side by punishing the bad balls they consistently bowled.

Waugh came in with Australia in deep trouble, against a South African side with the momentum(sp?) running their way. Steve Waugh took it to the South Africans giving us a win from the jaws of defeat.

What are your thoughts on the 2 innings?

I would say Steve Waughs due to the state of play at the time.

Ricky just took advantage of some very poor bowling from the Indians.

Steves 120 was made in pressure cooker situation.

Pontiings was the better technical innings, but Waughs was more vital.

I'd go for Waughs, simply because of the pressure he was under at the time.

Yeah, there's no pressure in a World Cup final.

there isnt much pressure when you come in 1/107 off about 12 overs.

great innings though.

I would go steve waughs knock. Nothing will beat the 99 wc win in my book.....tough tournament right the way through til the final when we stamped our authroity on the tournament.

2003 was great for other reasons.....just a great allround team performance.

Both innings were great, Steve Waughs was more melodramatic, while Ponting was more authoritive.

Steve Waughs famous quote to gibbs ("You just dropped the world cup") shows that South Africa really lost that game rather than SW or Australia winning it. Even at the end with the Donald run out they should have won.

Whereas Ponting's innings completely shut India out of the game. When Hayden went out they might have thought they could restrict Australia to 270 (which they may have got), but Ponting bludgened them out without a whimper.

So I'd go for Ponting. The game was never in doubt after it, whereas Waughs innings still left the door open.

You're confusing two different matches. The Waugh hundred was the last super six match. The Donald run out was the semi final.

Ponting's was better he attacked throughout whereas steve waugh wasn't nearly as dominant as Ponting, Ponting's was more important and he didn't hit a bad shot whereas Waugh did but was given a life.

Ponting came in at 1/100 off 13 overs against crap bowling. Waugh came in at 3/40odd chasing 270 against a better attack on a dodgy wicket. I think that sums it up for me, although Pontings was the more entertaining of the two

Should have done a poll for this....

an amazing innings by Punter but Waugh's is the best one day innings I've seen in the context of a whole match. The SA bowlers were in a different league to the Indians who were average
