And even going back to the time he was allegedly wanting out, from what i remember it was because at half time in the final game of the year we were being smashed, and all the players were having a joke and making their plans for the big end of year piss up which was to start directly after that game. Apparently he was furious as the year wasnt over and they still had football to play. Im glad he calmed down and stayed.

I also remember him when he was on telly in that kids show, he was very respected as a quality person, their is good similarity between him and Cotch the way they carry themselves.

Couldn't agree more- Richmond supporter as a kid, our most decorated player of the last 30 years and a funny bastard to boot. I heard him speak at a supporter event a couple of years ago- very funny talking about richo especially.

Also very humble - asked if he regretted not playing 300 and said something like 'No, three players have played 300 at richmond; Jack Dyer, Kevin Bartlett and Francis Bourke (I think he mentioned richo as well cos there was still a chance he could make it)- I know where I stand'

And when asked about whether he was happy cotch had his number said 'when you're a player you don't want your number to go to a dud but then again you don't want it to go to somebody who's going to be better than you- and that's what's happened'

Criticism and Controversy

Despite his great success as a player, Campbell was often maligned by Richmond supporters.
One of the reasons for supporter negativity was his perceived tendency to go missing during important matches against traditional club rivals and when the club needed to win games to make finals series. The perception was also there that he underperformed in the few finals matches that Richmond was involved in during his tenure.
Campbell was also criticised for his perceived lack of hard and tough play. Playing for a club with a history of gritty, fearless players, Campbell was sometimes disparaged for his inability to win the hard ball in an 'in and under' fashion.
Off the field, many Richmond supporters also found reason to be sceptical towards Campbell, firstly for threatening to walk out on the Club in 1998 when he was unhappy with the way it was being run, and secondly for his perceived clandestine role in stripping team mate Matthew Knights of the club captaincy.

Funny you mention that rp, im one to pick up every detail when i read about the Rfc, when i read the ben cousins book i was interested to read the one person at our club he was quite effusive about was WC, in fact crediting him for a succesful return to afl football. And as you say i have oft heard young players sing his praise in the context of s mentor. All this speaks volumes for what he can contribute and answers the op bw the eyes

That was kind of my point. You can pretty much bank that entry was edited by a tigers fan, which is pretty sad and pathetic in my book

And now according to the main board one particular ex-lion, ex-bulldog, ex-Glenorchy Magpie with a ginger beard and white hair is doing the same.
 
The ironic thing about Campbell is that any wiki entries,any boofhead supporter abuse or anything of that negative nature he just dead bats it.
Has never seeked attention or put himself above the RFC and is as loyal as they come.
Pretty much the model footballer/clubman those who we all pray walks through the.punt road doors.a one in what 100? Type,maybe more.
Yet still.....
I just really wonder about some supporters motives at times.It's like they don't like us winning or having a decent player because then they can't bitch and moan.
I also question anyone at all who calls a player of Campbell's stature over rated and what possible basis is there for that?
 
All this talk about WC and his "maligned" status as a player had the memory cells firing and they have finally gelled. I remember my brother and a few other Tigers used to bag Cambo a bit and almost had me convinced - so I started watching what he did and the effect it had on the team. While doing this he got injured (I think) and was out for a couple of weeks and the team performance just plumetted. He may not have been a hard in and under Tiger but by hell he seemd to know how to get the team to respond.
 
Yeah he wasn't in and under I guess but that wasn't his go. Certainly wasn't a jib.
It's funny how people neglected how much he ran,his prowess to win contested footy one on one,good mark,fantastic kick for goal and leader.
People only see what they want to see sometimes.
 
I still remember when became captain, and every single time one of our players was in a scuffle, was hit late etc, he would run the length of the field to fly the flag, regardless of how insignificant it was. He cared for the players around him and certainly made very effort to look out for them.

I also remember Benny Gale speaking very highly of him early into his career, although he did refer to him as a jelly bean head when he was looking through my football card folders. Haha if only I could be a kid again.

We aren't talking about Greg Williams or a Paul Coach here. It's Wayne Campbell... of course some people are going to think he's was overrated. He just wasnt that good. Wasnt damaging enough. Had a go.. But come on.

Nobody is saying he is on par with Williams. Poor choice btw as not many are.
Define overrated?
If a bloke wins 4 best and fairests and plays as many good games you'd be entitled to rate him as a pretty good player.

My point and many others too is he wasn't a shit player or just average either.As far as you saying he just wasn't that good well to me that means we haven't a good player for 25 years.

Well we certainly haven't had enough good players in the last 25 years all playing together at the same time.( painfully obvious)

How about... he could get the footy but that was about it?..? (unless set for goal) No good?
how about ..good player but played out of position ?

Anyway I see your point and as i said before I had an unhealthy negative thing going on about Wayne Campbell.
I shouldn't be commenting on him at all.

I think his record would suggest otherwise mate, not opinion that he won 4 x b&f and 2 x AA and quite a few vic jumpers..not that good players just dont reach those heights FACT

Yes I know but for me it was .. He had the plumb position.. allowed to run around all day by himself, get more ball than anybody else and yet the team didn't seem to benefit. I honesty liked when he was played as a flanker...get the ball ..kick the goal.
Sad Richmond supporter.. I guess I wanted a superstar. Enter Trent Cotchin.
 
has anyone got a real reason why WC shouldn't be at the club besides some wiki paragraph which has no impact on what he does for the club currently?
 
Anyway what was all that rubbish about Campbell and the Knights captaincy . Never heard of it myself. Was it story at the time or just sour grapes from someone on Wiki.

Ps Back to the thread. Campbell can do what ever likes around at the club. If he's good at his job then good luck to him.
