At the time of the Carey trade, I didn't think it was the right move. Nevertheless, I didn't think it was as bad as hindsight makes it appear, but I still don't think it was such a disaster. (Personally, I think #10 for Bode was worse).
Two points -
1) As DaveW said earlier, we were all looking for a better 2004 after an understandably rusty 2003. That looks unlikely now.
2) Something a lot of non-Crows supporters don't seem to have got their heads around is that Carey was not recruited to be "the man". "The man" in Adelaide's forward line finished 2nd and 3rd in the B&F in 2001 and 2002, was twice Adelaide's best team man (1999 / 2002). His name is Mark Stevens. A forward line structured around a fit Stevens and another tall and a semi-fit Carey is potent [exhibit A - Round 1 2003]. Unfortunately, Stevens has basically been unfit since Carey arrived, and neither Carey in his present state or Perrie are capable of being the number one forward today.
IF Stevens had stayed fit, the decision to recruit Carey would have looked a lot more reasonable, even with hindsight.
