Player Watch Wayne Milera

I want to rewind time and hear Gillon McLaughlin say "with pick 11 Adelaide Crows select Charlie Curnow from Geelong Falcons"

Given where the list is at I'm prepared to park judgement of Milera until next year. I don't think there is any doubt his contract came up at the right time and needs to be doing more but I'm happy to let it slide for now.

He is absolutely huge for the type of player we drafted him as, and he just doesn't need to be. We don't need him to be a big bodied defender or part time forward, we need him to be an outside midfielder/wing who can receive our panicked handballs, sidestep and go on his way. Right now he is too close to the action too often smack bang in the middle of it.

Knee is clearly holding him back from the sidestep he used to have, as well.

He's only looked good as a half back and we won't play him there
Very true.

So many options to move Dawson on to a wing.

Our selectors really don't like having all players playing in their best position.

Meanwhile we leave the actual specialist forward in the sanfl.

It's hard to tell where we're playing him. Half forward? Looks like a guy who has never found a position (funny that).
He's playing the role Cook should be playing.

Milera should be wing, with Dawson the other.

And Cook playing HF extending to wing during play.

This is where playing SF/Mids Rowe, McHenry and at times Murphy as well hurts. Plus Crouch.

To accommodate Crouch we are pushing Hately out to the peripheral roles of Wing/HB/Pocket.

To accommodate having three average SF/Mids we are missing an opportunity to play the talented Cook.

And playing these two/three is also affecting Rachele. Who, with Sog should be our only two SF/Mids. With McAdam Forward as well.

I opened this thread after 11 games (probably far too early) with this comment:

"I'm not seeing top level skill, run or determination. He's clearly not a dud, but he's a first round pick and needs to judged by that level. And right at the moment I feel like his game is a bit... nothing."

Tbh I think I could write that now after 69 game.

Is it a case of:

1) Hey he was out for a long time, give him some time.
2) He was going to be really goood, but the injury has cut him down
3) He is what he always was.

He is a first round pick (pick 11) so he needs to be rated on that basis.

Just have a look at the others that were in that draft - he is a fail (on the same level as Jones and McHenry if we are to be consistent).

Seen nothing so far to suggest an improvement. Still gob smacked why he was given a 5 year contract.

Cook's not on a big undeserved contract. So Cooks development is being screwed because those clowns in list management can't handle being exposed for handing out a ridiculous contract.

Milera needs to be moved to another club. Just pay half his salary and do what needs to be done. Getting back 50% of the sunk cost is better than keeping him on our list being played over someone that has talent. We know the talented player only puts up with it for so long before they look for a trade.

Offer him up for trade.. lacks intensity and always has.

We were happy to lose Atkins because he lacked intensity, stop playing guys like Sholl and Cook because they lack intensity, move on Milera because he lacks intensity, and then complain about the lack of skills in our side.

I like Milera, he shows moments of creativity and class others in our side aren't capable of. He's obviously not in form at the moment but would not be the first player to take some time even years to get their body right after a long time out of the game. Wouldn't be the first to never really recover either but I think he has attributes worth persisting with and I don't think the level he was playing at pre injury is the peak of what he is capable of.

Exactly, he's 7 games back from basically 2 years out.

He's not in great form and I'd put him into the midfield in the SANFL, but he has skill and a high ceiling, plus he's only 24.

Spot on.. moments.
Trade him while we can sell the potential.
He's done.

He’s cooked IMO. Go watch the game on the weekend, or any games of his this year.
Just…terrible defensively, lacks agility he used to have, doesn’t run at the opposition anymore

Honestly I reckon hes slowly getting back into form. See a little more from him each game. To be fair he's learning a new role.

Wonder if playing him at hb instead, would push Dawson on the wing and maybe bring Cook into that role.

Have a decent kick out of the back half, on the wing and hf for fwd 50 entries.

Find it crazy how much smith's kicking has regressed. Something is off if your skill players skills are off.

Of all the people to have a go at, Milera wouldn't be one.

I can't understand it.

He's 24 and just come off a 2 year layoff.

He's one of the only players in the side with actual class and skills, which we are crying out for.

We give other players who have come off a year long ACL much more leniancy and understanding, than has been provided Milera for some strange reason.

Of course this year would be a major adjustment year for him, however class is something that he won't lose and is something we need to invest in. I'd play him for the rest of the year and I think he's slowly building.

Totally agree - you can see signs every week that his confidence is returning. His skills have picked up markedly (still a way to go mind you) since his first couple of games back, and he's still got some pace (that chace down in the middle of the ground a couple of weeks ago (can't remember the oppo player but they were quick) was eye-brow raising suff.

As BunjiMac said, class doesn't go away. We must give him every chance to get his confidence back before next year.

I think Wayne still has really good vision and a laser dart of a kick when he's on. I just think he's very aware that he's lost a step of pace and agility, the step that once made him really hard to tackle and help him to win the contested ground ball. Feel like when he was at his best that confidence in his movement skills was one of his biggest weapons.

I've not given up hope he finds it again, or at least a post injury version of it, I just don't think we see it this season.
