Gunna be a gun, no sweat.
Still needs to work on defence. Scully burnt him a couple of times.
I reckon he was won that struggled with heat, he looked spent at times but he still had it 23 times.

Scully burnt off a lot of our players, including Mackay. I did smile when Otten chased him down though.

He's put on a chunk of muscle over the summer and is stronger through the core too. I was sceptical as to whether he could build his body and he'd be stuck as a wingman his whole career. Reckon he'll morph into a complete midfielder as time goes on.

One thing I notice about elite players the inate ability to get arms and foot free to move the ball along under pressure and put it 8n a position where the next guy can use it best despite that pressure

He has that.

At 19 his defensive efforts are not great. It is not natural to him But that will come. But he us not poor in this regard at all.

He has broad shoulders and long arms. Tells me he will build into a decent unit once hks body matures.

Was it Milera that laid a massive bump in the 1st or 2nd quarter? It was the sort of physicality I really hope he can bring into his game.
He should have tackled[emoji1]

Nah he created a turnover with that perfect bump

Still eligible for Rising Star

SPP will likely get the nom this week, but Milera will get his go.
I read all the hype on SPP but looking at the stats there is every reason to think that Milera's game was every bit as good as Power-Pepper's.
Total rankings were 87 for Milera and 78 for Power-Pepper.
Milera had 13 kicks and 10 handballs for 352 metres gained at 78% efficiency.1 goal and 2 assists.
Power-Pepper had 12 kicks 7 handballs for 470 metres gained at 58% efficiency.2 goals and 0 assists.

Will be interesting to see the nominations. We forget that Milera is still eligible.

I didn't ;) I said it just after he was sent back to the SANFL after his 8th game. He was looking a little tired in the AFL, so sending him back to the SANFL then to just keep learning in the SANFL after a nice taste of the AFL was clever by the club in my mind. Keeping him eligible for the rising star but also working nicely for his development.

Not sure the club would be too fussed about RS eligibility.

But I do like the way they have handled his development.

Some guys need to thrive and learn how to dominate at a lower level to really exceed at the next level. Spend some time at SANFL to learn how to be elite and control a game instead of being left in the AFL and merely learning to survive.

It is the difference between learning to thrive and merely learning to survive.

Look at Carlton. They have some really nice talent there but no idea about how to do development.

While I think Milera and Atkins lack natural defensive instincts (possibly because they are so awesome offensively) and occasionally don't seem to chase when they should...it was an impressive effort that they shared the game high stats for Crows tackles on the weekend. Fantastic development to their games.

Milera looks really good with ball in hand however on occasions he gives a HB to a player of less skill or pace and needs to take the opportunity to use his speed and attack.

Also I would also like to see Wayne use his speed to get at the opposition a little quicker and a little more aggressively

I see this written about every kid, but i actually can't remember this happening like ever. We're patient when they're young.

Well knowing BF I'm just planning for the worst.

Our midfield is extremely young still.

Douglas being the most senior player now with Sloane and Mackay by his side. That's pretty ridiculous when you think about it.

We've seen what our young midfield is capable of when they all turn up on the same day. Matched it with one of the best midfielders in the comp.

However they are still growing as a unit, and we could maybe find ourselves getting smashed by Carlton one day and scratching our heads as to why.

I'm just saying for people to still be prepared for inconsistencies from the youngsters. They aren't a full fledged unit just yet.... but boy do they look promising!

Yeah, I was shocked when I saw him at the ground. In the space of a year he's gone from a boy's body to a man's body.

His fitness clearly needs some work but he is just so classy with the ball in hand. Going to be fun watching his career!

It's crazy to thing that we have Brad (when fit) who's on another level to his brother to come back into the team.

Some of us were saying at the end of last season that improvement in Milera will be pretty noticeable after another pre-season under his belt.

He has gotten bigger and stronger over the pre-season and that allows him to do more on the field. He is a young kid playing his 9th game of AFL football and he showed yesterday that with another couple of pre-seasons and some 50 AFL games under his belt, he will be one of the stars of the team.

Like every young player there are plenty of things to work on and he will work on those gradually but there is talent there and now that he has gotten fitter and stronger, I am sure the club will look to play him in the seniors as much as possible.

I expect our midfield to be like our backline the past few years and start to slowly gel over the next 2 or so years.

With regards to your second point, I think this will come with time and development of that real match fitness vs simple track fitness. Likely more so relating to anaerobic fitness, that ability to repeat high intensity efforts. It's something I think a lot of young players struggle with and comes with match experience and repeat preseasons. I think you also see it in those players who regularly have interrupted preseasons.

Your first point relates again to this point of how much energy does he have left in the tank for the increased effort, as well as just simple confidence, which will come with time.

I'm a bit worried about the heights that Brad is capable of given how derailed his career has been so far.

Fingers are crossed, but I'm not holding my breath right now...

I'm at the point with Brad where he's just kind of a nice-to-have. It's a bonus when he's fit and available, but he's not one we should be counting on to be in the side for any significant period of time. He's just icing on the cake - he's unlikely to ever be part of the actual cake, sadly.

There were a few times I will admit, where the GWS midfield broke through and were running towards the 50. And yet a lot of our midfielders were just jogging back.

Im one of those fans that sitting in my seat yelling RUUUUUUN WOULD YOU! I definitely noticed Atkins doing it a few times cos of his light green boots, but he wasn't the only one. Hopefully as the fitness of others picks up that is rectified a little.

However I thought our pressure on the whole was very good. We defended so well at times, and then slipped up right at the last minute, only for GWS to kick the flukiest of goals. To be honest we almost should have won by a lot more given how GWS scored their goals and how many we missed.

Keep that pressure up all year and it will go a long way to our flag hopes.
