Leave the kid alone. He's played barely 10 games and is skinny as a rake. Not the first kid to be overwhelmed by the showdown intensity. Good learning experience. Back him in. Kid's got talent.
Yep, bloke called Doughty played his first or second game in a showdown and was awful. Look what he did.. and Milera has 4 times the upside. Persist for a while yet.

I don't think anyone is being overly harsh on him. This isn't a roast thread. From the comments I get a sense of pretty much everyone still having very high hopes for him.

Given there were more than a few in the changes thread suggesting he is close to being dropped (not something I agree with) I felt like having a discussion thread about where we all think he is was worthwhile - esp as the Showdown was pretty ugly.

The general concensus is he is tracking well, would like to see him do a bit more defensively, and to keep taking on the game, and that we still feel like he has a tonne of upside.

Not every thread has to be a roast or toast thread.

I like the kid and want him to be future star of the club. If I didn't give a damn about him I wouldn't care about discussing how he's going.

The Showdown in round 2 was the only game last year he got more than 12 possessions.

This year he already had 23 vs GWS and 16 vs Hawthorn.

Thought he was a bit shell shocked by the intensity at the start of last night's game. Let's put him in that situation again, with another year in the gym, and I think he will be improved.

This year, starting from pre-season he has already been more consistently involved with the game both offensively and defensively than last year, as you'd expect as he matures.
.

He certainly looked shellshocked last night, I think the intensity of the game and missing a few passes by foot early really sapped his confidence. He seemed a bit broken after that and really struggled to impact the game. The difficulty for the coach now becomes how you manage this. Some players respond to being backed in to stay in the side, others need to actually be dropped back a level to regain confidence in an easier competition with less pressure. I tend to agree with the thoughts that he still has quite a bit of growing maturity wise and that he may in fact need a couple of games at the lower level, however I also feel the sooner we can get him to 50 games the better and so I'd be happy to back him in.

The trouble is there's 3 guys, who IMO are also supremely talented who just had very good games in the sanfl in Crouch, Greenwood and Menzel.

Tough job to be a selector this week.

Agreed and I think it's an interesting discussion topic and I we all recognise the talent there, but that there's still some work and growth to be done. The question is really how best do we support his growth?

We need to resist the urge to drop him. Won't take him long to get up to the speed of the game and start delivering consistently.

Lower-intensity SANFL games would be development poison.

Yeah and why the **** would we drop Milera but retain Mackay? That's just dumb

Deep down all of us know that we will :(

Or we don't and it is truly a new dawn :)

Very similar season to last year for Wayne. Feel he has potential but has a long way to go. He seems passive out there through different parts of a game. Would give him 2 more games but will most likely make way for brad crouch in a couple of weeks. Very similar player to mackay. I hope this draft pick turns out well but reserving my judgement until end of the season.

We bitch about not playing people in form and then can the club when they do. Mackay had a good preseason and earned his spot rd1 due to form. He has played quite well since then, keeping his spot.
When he plays two or three in a row that are crap then he gets dropped.

Having held onto Mackay for years with no return, they're not going to rush to drop him when he finally starts kicking goals.

My only criticism of him is that he goes the bump rather than tackle too much. The bump seems to be his first option.

I am sure that will be corrected with experience.

When Brad Crouch comes in, in say 2-3 weeks, someone will have to make way. Now injuries may make that decision for us but you'd have to say he's vulnerable based on last game; really did look off the pace. I said after the JLT that he should play every game to fast track his development, I've no doubt he'll be a special player but at this stage Hampton and Knight are comfortably ahead of him. Mackay's the obvious one but he's clearly got compromising photos of someone high up at the club.

I think given the fact that our MF is playing better than most expected and that we are winning he should stay in the side. He's not killing it ATM but he's part of a winning combination which is working. It might be different if we were 1 from 3 and being smashed in the middle but we're not.
As far as his squibbing the contest comments go how do we know he's not under Pykes instruction to leave that to the big boys and and to stay outside most of the time. I recall Pyke saying when he 1st started that he would maximize players strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Clearly Mileras body size ATM.
