1 year spell? That isn't going to help him.

We need to persist playing Milera in blocks of games, then if he struggles for a few, drop him to work on his game, then bring him back.

He is only young, so will be inconsistent. The sooner we get him to 50 games, the sooner we will really reap the benefits.
Agree... Look at someone like Atkins... First year at Sturt, inconsistent bit player, then gradually built year by year... Didn't get a game until his third year where he was mostly sub and inconsistent... Wasn't until his fourth year he started to show some good signs and then this year he's really stepped up to be too echelon.

Milera is way ahead of that curve.

I find the criticism of this kid difficult to stomach. He doesn't shy away from contact, that is an absurd view. But what really shits me is that we've been complaining for years about lack of outside weapons and all our players getting sucked into the contest and a kid comes along and averages Dmac lifetime possession numbers in his second season and we want to pick on him. He's played less than fifteen games, FFS, get a grip.

Ye no.

Just because he gives us run doesn't excuse him from applying pressure. The constant excuse for the young shinny new toy is also wearing thin.
Cause he's played less than 15 games is also an excuse.
As an example of what Wayne does, or doesnt do, you would have seen the game last night where Bonts worked and ended up with 2 goals within minutes of each other and his opponent had stopped, stopped chasing and no work ethic.
This is my biggest critisicm of Wayne.

I shudder to think how he would have coped in last nights game.

This side of his game needs massive uplift. There have been too many times where he has given up the chase or applyied no pressure when his opponent is standing a meter away.

I dont see things as rosy as you or others do regarding Wayne.

The club needs to focus on Milera's development and make the best decisions for his career. If they decide that the best route is AFL level game exposure, then I am happy to carry him through if need be. Who knows, he could find form and blitz teams with silky skills and pace after the bye.

A 4th year Milera will be a sight to behold if he reaches his potential, some of the mental acrobatics regarding development here is astounding.

Precisely. And as I've already said, he's hardly been a liability. He was really good in round 1 and been racking up high teens disposals every week at a high disposal efficiency.

Give it time, he's a young outside midfielder. All it takes is a couple of seasons in an AFL system to fix that stuff up.

Come next season, he'll be ready to explode and be a gun.

Much like... well every other bloody player... we need to get 50 games into him.

Jeez, looking back, Macca, Sloane, Voldemort - big, big crows names - still had to get that under the belt before they kicked arse.

On the current list - Rat, Harto, Laird, Jenkins (probs hampton too) same deal.

It's a blessing when players can actually perform and dominate so early. I really only remember... Hart & Roo. Even then, they weren't total machines until after that period.

Be at peace.

The criticism he is receiving isn't about domination of games though, it's about intensity at the contest and the player. Only one of those players you mention above has a similar disposition and despite what he brings to the team, still receives plenty of criticism for this ever so frustrating trait.

I don't believe that he should be dropped, but I do believe he needs some things pointed out to him.
Finals are high physicality, high pressure moments and if you don't start practicing that aspect of the game during the minor rounds I can't see you suddenly switching it on under finals pressure.

Milera had a good game against Richmond last year. Vaguely remember him double-candying around Troy Chaplin.

What a shame Chaplin 'retired' :(

Fair enough too - we have coaches and post game analysis for a reason. If they are NOT having these discussions with him... they are not doing the most basic part of their job, which is giving feedback.

We mustn't forget the teachings of the great man, Phil Walsh.

The sooner you can fast track a player to 50 games the sooner you start getting the best of out them.

Again hesitant and looked out of his depth when the real heat was on us in the 1st quarter (not alone) plus his off the ball running and accountability down the wing & half back was very poor early. When the pressure valve was released in the 3rd on the team he was able to get involved and hit up players with some of that nice field kicking we know he's equipped with. Overall we learned nothing new about the young fellas game, was good if not a little frustrating that he remembered in the 2nd half that he can actually lay a good tackle when he wants to.

Not there yet. Lucky that knight got injured. Next year will be his year, but I'm hopeful he turns it on mid season

Good game yesterday I thought - a few times he got pushed off - but 19yo body and all that, at least he was in there. And nice display of silky skills. Feel like he is trying to take it on a bit more.

(That dropped mark at the end of the 3rd quarter though was one to forget - would have kept them scoreless otherwise)
