Player Watch Wayne Milera

Young fella is building nicely - averaged 20 touches over the last 6 and looks to be getting more comfortable.
Looks to have a Brodie Smith ceiling at this stage for mine, but you need 22 very good players to win a premiership, and think we can mark him down as one of them over the next ten years or so. Happy with that.

Are you suggesting Milera becoming a player the same quality as Brodie Smith would be a disappointment?

The All-Australian, absolute gun Brodie Smith?

I never really saw that myself. There were times where he could have gone but didn't, but then we've been complaining about multiple players being sucked to the contest and then getting torched on the spread if we lose it for the last few years. He's just a kid that is finding his way and he's not going to go for everything whilst there are more senior players around the area with the same opportunity. But even whilst posters were saying he was soft, they were ignoring the times that he did go to genuine bodily contests and instead focused on the times that he chose not to go.
He has been the same since day one. When it’s his turn he goes. He just didn’t realise sometimes when it was his turn to go.

With more confidence he is attacking more contests.

He will never defend like Charles, but Charles didn’t lace out leading forwards like Wayne. He is ok.

Yeah I wouldn't move him off that HBF for the rest of the season, even when Smith comes back. Smith wont be able to go as long as he usually does from all the time away so will need to rotate quite heavily. So it will be cool to seem them split that role this year.

Next year rotating those 2 off a wing or in the Mid, yeah i'm all for it!
We can have more than one player running off half back you know. :)

Not disappointed at all - as I said, he's building nicely and I'm really happy with what we've seen this year.

If you told me i was going to find money on the street I'll hope its a hundred, but wont be disappointed when it turns out to be a fifty.

There were definitely a couple of howlers, but I thought the majority of his kick in work was good, unfortunately he let himself down in the second half.

Indeed. BF is generally whinging about us kicking out boringly to the right flank, with many returns. I asked last year why we didn't pass to a leading teammate instead. Milera did this very well in the first half, and it was a revelation.
Of course, he can't afford to get sloppy and kick to stationary and covered targets, but it would be interesting to compare the average results of passing and RHS long kickouts over a significant period.

Think you’re overstating Brodie’s achievements pretty hard, and certainly misusing the term absolute gun.

He’s a talented player but has been inconsistent in his output

He was played a key role in launching us to a minor premiership last year, before injury robbed him of a chance to help us in the finals.

He hasn’t quite hit the heights we thought he might, but I’ll be bloody stoked if Milera can be the player he is.

The first half was excellent. Everything we want from him.

The second half was everything we don't want.
He stuffed up that one kick in the field of play, and then everything went downhill. He kept trying to take the game on, which was great to see, but you could tell he was overthinking every minor detail of his kicking, and thus botching it.

It will come with experience though. Would have learnt a bit tonight you'd hope.

I hope Wayne has a short memory on those 2 kicks. His form has been good to very good lately, and has actually been hitting a lot of those kinds of kicks before he stuffed it up. Going back into his shell is the last thing we want from him.

Learn from it and keep taking the game on Jnr!

Exactly, we have all been banging on how we want him to run hard and take the game on, and he is doing it. But he's still going to make errors from time to time. I hope he's been encouraged through it, and not belittled for taking a risk. Sure learn from it, but don't dwell!

Yeah, I have a man-crush on Brodie as much as anyone but he has put in the consistency of performance yet. Had his AA year then was down, then had concussion issues had a great year last year but needs to back that up IMO to start to cement Gun status.

Barring 2 or three poor and costly decisions, Milera absolutely oozed class on the weekend. I'm surprised no one else has commented in this thread yet. 2-3 of the highlights on the most valuable player segment on AFC this week are the sort you expect to see in a players career highlights reel.
I had thought previously that comparisons with S Burgoyne were pretty optimistic, but if he can do this stuff as a 20 yo, I think we are in for an absolute pleasure to watch this guy for the next 12 years or so.
He has improved immensely and the way he fooled the opposition with spins one way and the back the other way was breathtaking.
I think Wayne will be in our top 5-6 best players next year and for a very long time. His trajectory when playing uninjured seems steep.
Keep taking the game on Wayne.
Those errors that were costly will be there occasionally, but less than at the moment. He will start to get BOG nominations soon.

He had a good game which would have been great without those turnovers, he has to eradicate them from his game, which hopefully over time he will.

With Smith back and Seeds injured I would move him to the wing where if he turns it over it won’t be in our defensive half.

I would also like to see him get a shot in the middle, the way he works in traffic could be handy. There is no harm with the season shot in giving it a go.

He's still under 50 games, so it's expected he'll eradicate a fair portion of them in time. Not 100% of them seeing the role he is playing will cause the occasional one, but lessen the amount.

I too would be interested to see how he'd go in the middle. Could pinch hit very well in there with his skill set.

They were more decision making than skill errors, and that's fixable with experience. I'm backing him in. Love what he's bringing this year.

Next year I want him to continue developing at half back. Stretch goal has him in our B&F top 5.

Continue to improve at stopping his man, winning loose balls, and providing rebound. Keep it simple and stay focused.

Best for him and the team.

Smith would be getting the easiest opponent. Milera’s defensive work is slowly getting there. I think trying to negate some seriously good small forwards AND provide rebound could be a good development path.

Smith + Laird + Milera and we have some damaging attack from defence.

If he improves his consistency and defensive intensity then midfield could happen in a future year.

Jeez he's quickly becoming a favourite of mine, core strength is huge for a guy his size, he's only going to get better and better as well. We may have just found a real gem here. Shades of Shaun Burgoyne?

A huge amount of Burgoyne in WMJ. That core strength has become a weapon out of nowhere.

Who would have guessed the slight guy getting pushed off the ball would become a tackle breaker this year!

Really was Burgoyne like today. Robert Harvey even. Thought he should have been taken down 2 or 3 times, but the tackles just wouldn’t stick.
