Player Watch Wayne Milera

For mine, when we look back and sift through the ashes of 2018, Milera will be the story.

He's made such significant strides and shown such talent, that he now projects as one of the very best of his cohort and capable of all kinds of honours/awards.

His vision, ball use and agility is stunning. Will end up being one of those players who ends up just playing wherever the hell he wants to, bobbing up in all 3 zones as required.

Will be a star of the game

And also Himmelberg. Bought that digital pass to watch Fog and EH play SANFL this year. A few games in and it was unwatchable. It turned into watching top ups dump kick all day. But when we got our players back we looked good. And all of a sudden, EH looked like a different beast. Might not have been as sudden for those that had the patience to watch every week, but for me it was an order of magnitude change from him.

He really looks AFL ready now. He is physically as ready as Hipwood for example when he came in and showed off his talent. At the same time, JJ is undroppable now. But EH needs AFL game time now to take the next step.

It’s also a year to look back at the Gooch and ask what the **** happened there. He showed a few really exceptional things at SANFL level, but overall he looked like just another player. But came into the AFL and looks as exciting as any late first round pick in the comp. His break away speed is at Brad Crouch at his best levels. But taking things into perspective both he and Murphy are still yet to break out.

That’s fair, I do think Milera eye catching style of play will supplant a lot of guys. But you’re right we won’t go into 2019 devoid of talent.

Put it this way, if Jnr makes it on that list then it’s safe to say we will see some pretty special things!
Amen

Well you could break it down further to things like "long kicks to advantage" but the starting point would be disposals to advantage
You want some combination of metres gained and disposal to advantage.

Similarly I’d love to see a pressure act effectiveness stat. What reduction in DE is caused by a player’s pressure act? Otherwise we can’t tell the Charles from the DMac / Gallucci defensively.

Here's a challenge for you; Predict your top 5 best AFC players for 2019.

Note; its very hard to keep Milera out of it.

For me;

1) Laird
2) MCrouch
3) Gibbs
4) Milera
5) Doedee
M Crouch
Milera
Gibbs
Smithers
Laird

Smithers and Milera are the most creative and provide drive from HB.
Laird is dependable. Also provides drive from HB.
Gibbs is our best skilled mid.
M Crouch to become (if not already) a truly elite inside mid.

Apologies to Doedee, Sloane, Greenwood but you said only five.

If Brad Crouch is fit (an enigma) he is in the five.

No Talia?

Love the prospect of Milera, Laird and Smith combining and interchanging through the back line and midfield. All capable of kicking goals.

Similarly Greenwood, Gibbs and Sloane forward and midfield.

Add in the Crouch brothers as mainstays of the midfield and all of a sudden you've got a versatile team.

Milera's recent demonstration of his ability to evade and fend off, then balance to find a target by foot or hand together with strong hands and leap when marking is bloody exciting. His decision making and skill by foot has always been there. That close down tackle on Boak was also evidence of a hunger for the tackle. If he can bring all these facets to his game on a consistent basis he'll be our best player.

Good list, would probably replace Jenkins for Gibbs. Haven't been a huge supporter of Jenkins over the years, but on the back of the last few weeks I'm very excited about where he takes his game in 2019. Hopeful our inside 50s, forward structure, & conversion rate will be strongly reviewed at season-end. Add a fully fit Tex and I expect we score highly, like last year.

If we want to win the flag it needs to be:

1) Sloane
2) Gibbs or B. Crouch
3) Tex
4) M. Crouch or Greenwood
5) Eddie or JJ

If those 8 players are in our top 10 players, we will be back in business. I feel really confident that we will get a great show from our defenders, so if these guys are better than our defenders we are back.

My actual prediction

1) Matt Crouch
2) Laird
3) Smith
4) Doedee
5) Milera

Can't believe the lack of Sloane. Injury free and more (hopefully) lessons learned from tagging. He is our best player.

He is still struggling to break a hard tag though. It’s been nearly a season and a half.

To think we move him to the half forward flank so we could accomodate Mackay in the side at half back for a while.
Coaches are honestly numpties at this club.
In fairness, the kid can definitely play forward. I think we've yet to see his talents there at AFL level, but I think he can and will do some damage there in the future.

I just don't see it as Milera doesn't have the super aggressive defensive game required to be a small forward. There is equally no place in the game right now for a small forward that is mecurial offensively and lackluster defensively.

He may kick some nice goals when he moves up to the midfield.

Yep, will slot goals pushing up the ground, much like Seed, Smithers and occasionally Dmac and Rat do.

Rat ia a tad underrated here. Is a decently consistent goal threat.

But to has to be apart of the long term goal with Milera. An outside/hybrid midfielder who is a goalscoring threat.
