With Laird (76% defence) keeping on keeping on, Doedee (83% defence) and Milera (76% defence) 'developing nicely' and Smith (74% defence) back in earnest, where do you see Seedsman's (60% defence) role next season? I though Seed was particularly important for us early in the year.

Is there room for all five?
Milera, Smith and seedsman could all easily rotate into the wing, so yes.

The more quality players we have they can play multiple positions the better.

Plenty, Seed remains predominantly on the wing

Seedsman has played nearly all season as a wingman.... So hopefully continues in this role when he returns.

Edit - beaten by Squiba

Milera & Doedee cementing best 22 are the big pluses for this season.

Both are exciting long term prospects.
Our 2015 draft is looking pretty good at this point, A couple of potentially 200+ gamers in Milera and Doedee in the main, plus Keath and Greenwood in the rookie draft. And some people don't rate Hamish and co...

So true.

This board has been better without the mad repetitive ramblings of Marty.

I dare not tag him in.

Seed I think plays more of a defensive leaning winger, whilst Atkins is our more offensive leaning winger, hence the more defensive numbers. But yeah, definitely room as Seed is wing. Probably have Smith, Milera and Laird rotating through the midfield at times to help chop out.

The kicking efficiency stat has a lot to answer for. Players aren't stupid. They know a long kick to a pack ticks a box

The efficient stat in general is extremely difficult stat to measure, especially when it’s a simple combined “disposal efficiency”. Handball vs kick, very different kettle of fish, you shouldn’t be missing too many handballs.

The way they measure the efficiency stat has merit, if you meant to kick the ball down the line to a contest and no one marks it, your kick still hit its target. The trouble is, someone like Smith or Milera, will naturally have power efficiencies because they’re taking the harder kick, trying to make the play. Kelly or Hartigan on the other hand, just chip it sideways to an unmarked player so their efficiency goes up.

At the very least, have to compare players of the same position. It’s also why I like stats like “score involvements” or “goal assists”, were your disposals linked to goals being kicked, far more important.

Seed is kind of both. That kick of his can turn defence into offence in an instant.

Don't forget he bid on Harrison Himmelberg with Doedee's pick - that's another hit in the 2015 draft

Seedsman takes MacKays spot.....forever.

I think we're all in agreement that 2018 was a good developing year for Jr, and the last half especially. His pre-season photos has him looking an absolute beast so what are we thinking for 2019 given he is still young, but old enough now to rally make the leap.

Top 5 B&F?
AA squad?

Are those aims too low, about right?

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I think Milera won't take the step we are hoping this season.

I suspect we will move him up the ground a bit - wing, midfield minutes, and I think it will mess him up a little.

What it will do is set him up for 2020 though. He will be a key midfielder by the 2020 season.

You may be right. Interesting though in an interview a week or so back he mentioned that he has missed large blocks of all his previous preseasons due to patella tendonitis. Mentioned he is moving freely now, though still needs to take care and manage it. Personally I was a little surprised he won the 2km time trial

If we leave him at HB he will dominate, but I suspect we dont want to.

I'd love to see him as a midfielder.

Hopefully we do what's best for him to produce his best football and to become the best player he can be.

And not shuffle him around to accommodate others.

I think my goal with Milera is stats based, as really, if all goes well he shouldn't improve on his BnF position (by virtue of others being better).

It's definitely start to make the switch to midfield, and try for a stat line of 21 disposals/4 score involvements/350 meters gained with more TOG% as well (try and push 84% there).

Agree that he shouldn’t be shuffled to accommodate others. But I would shuffle others to accomodate Wayne. I think he should be transitioned to the midfield throughout the season. Start the season with relatively low minutes, but build minutes as the season progresses. It might be a season too early to do that though. He just found his feet and he might have put in an AA type season if left where he was. But with an eye to the future I can’t get him in there soon enough.

Tend to agree with this.

I think/hope his positioning at HB was more of an education process, as well as filling a need with Smithers and Seed out in 2018.

He has the evasive ability body strength and quick decision making to be a very good midfielder. Now seems to be building the tank.

2019 could well be the start of that transition.

Both of these are stretch goals and I would think probably unlikely in 2019.

That said he is extremely talented. I have always thought he was a partial S Burgoyne clone. Super skilled with beautiful accurate kick, now excellent in close with a healthy dose of 'Dont Argues', provides very good run, decision making and enjoys a goal. Certainly looks to be a top 5 player Crows player over coming years IMO.

Especially when those others are fringe role players.

I'm sure he'll be M Okay in that regard.

I may be wrong here but I think the Freo game was the last game Campo got his way in the Mackay/Milera debate and probably the start of him rejigging the coaches box to bring in people with a more objective voice in the debate for selection. I would not be surprised if Pyke has lessened the value of two coaches votes in the selection process to make sure bullshit friendships don't stand in the way of what is best for the club

Best to start him half back and let him pinch hit a bit in midfield

As time goes on just gradually increase his mid minutes as long as his game is improving in there

Before you know it he’s a mid

Agreed.

If it is a gradual process, his confidence won't be shot by a bad game in the guts...and he will have those. By switching him back to HBF where he knows he can play a role, then he will always have some confidence in his game which is important. As you have said, won't be long, his first few games at HBF were OKish, got a bit better and the last half dozen were very good. He just needs to make sure he doesn't make the avoidance of a tackle his thing, you can overdo that in the guts and end up having your forwards all out of position when you decide to kick
