Opinion Ways To Improve Game Day Experience On The GC

Pies have a trophy cabinet similar to Real Madrid's there. They also have boot's from famous player's of year's gone by, etc.

But yeah, as soon as we win something it'd be awesome to have something like you have suggested!

Interesting. Surely that trophy cabinet is based at Victoria Park or the Westpac Centre? Couldn't possibly be at the MCG? The reason I ask is because the Suns are in a unique situation by having their own stadium essentially (certainly the only AFL team with management rights over a stadium). Geelong are only other team in the AFL that don't share tenancy with any other sports team but not sure if they have their own trophy area.

Ablett looking more and more likely to win the Brownlow this year so they could start their area this off season coming.

I guess it really depends how big the trophy area gets. The best bet I would have thought is the area in which the foundation members board is located (pic below) where they will showcase the QClash trophy before matches against Brisbane.

(Not me by the way, just a random photo from Google)

The area is located on the western side of the stadium just before the media facilities. You think this would do? You can see the field from that area so I think it's probably best position for a trophy showcase area.

Certainly is an issue. This is why I would like a light rail line to the stadium ASAP. I believe there is a shuttle to the game from the Southport Sharks but that may not be an option for you.

There is most certainly standing room up the northern end goals and as SUNS pointed out, more along the eastern side. I would book the tickets if I were you considering the last time the Pies played here it sold out and (I think) quite a few were turned away at the gates. I don't play Golf but from all accounts Emerald Lakes is quite good. The Suns players often use the course. If you were looking for a really good course you could head over the Nerang river (like 2 mins drive from Metricon) to the Royal Pines Resort. The Australian PGA Championships are going to be held there for the first time later this year and is no doubt the best course on the Coast.

Also, you may want to see this post I made about attending games at Metricon here.

Thanks for the info mate.

Isnt public transport set to be improved before the Commonwealth Games in 2018?

Current plans do not include upgrades towards Metricon Stadium.

The Collingwood game on the weekend once again showed the public transport at the venue just isn't up to scratch. Took around half an hour to get on the shuttle buses and reports that it took up to an hour to get a taxi! There was only 20,000 people there, imagine what it'll be like when 40,000 make their way into Carrara for the Commonwealth Games. A tram line from Broadbeach to Metricon must be built in my opinion.

Pretty poor isn't it. So they plan on placing extra seats at Metricon but no additional transport? That sounds like a complete cluster * to me.

Ferry plan floated for city
Ferry plan floated for city

AFTER more than a decade treading water the Gold Coast City Council is to christen plans for a ferry service in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.

The council will announce a tender process to build a citywide system within weeks.

Mayor Tom Tate has warned companies vying for the contract that they would have to meet key conditions around noise restriction.

Plans for the ferry service are expected to include a route from Runaway Bay to Broadbeach, with another stop at Carrara's Metricon Stadium for AFL games and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Looks like Metricon may actually get a form of public transport to the stadium but probably not what you may have thought. In my opinion, a ferry service would probably be enough for the short term and a long term goal of a tram line from Broadbeach. As you can see in the photo below, Metricon is located right on the Nerang River and the proposed ferry terminal will be located right next to the stadium so that patrons will be able to get to the stadium in no time. The proposed service will also allow tourists easy access directly to the stadium from Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise.

This makes sense IMO and would make game day at Carrara a lot better. It would be great for Gold Coast residents who live near the Nerang River and can just take a ferry to the game but it also might also lessen the bus queues for those who don't.

I can't see this happening, the river is lined with housing where would the terminals go, if it is a trip from Broadbeach to the Stadium it will be a 30 min trip (minimum) as the speed limit is 8 knots. Not a viable option IMO

There are areas along the Nerang river that aren't lined with houses. From what I can tell, the terminals will be placed behind the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (next to the casino), Appel Park in Surfers Paradise and next to Metricon. Those are just three of the eight locations shown on that map but they are the most important ones to the Suns. The article also states that the speed limit will be changed to 10 knots for the ferry so I guess that would cut the time down to 25 mins or so. You're looking at a similar time on a tram from Broadbeach to Metricon anyway so it's not the worst idea.

I believe the ferry will only travel to Metricon on game/event day. Most of the trips will be going north of Broadbeach to popular destinations like Surfers Paradise, Marina Mirage and South Stradbroke Island. It's viable, in my opinion.

If they can make it work then awesome, 9km (from Convention centre) @ 10 knots (18.52 Kph) means a journey time of above 29 mins if there are no other stops. Could work. They would have to allow parking under the convention centre.

There are no other stops between Broadbeach and Metricon in the proposal. I'm sure the Suns would work out a place for ferry patrons to park given the options in the vicinity of the Convention Centre (Jupiters, Pacific Fair). I would also think they would run at least three ferries on game day so patrons are only waiting 15 mins or so between ferries. Do you have an estimated time from Appel Park in Surfers Paradise to Metricon? If you aren't sure where I mean, it is located just south of Helm Bar (previously the Titanium Bar).

Wouldn't it be great if we got to 2018 and Metricon was accessible via bus, ferry and trams?

Not only that the option of all 3 plus those parking areas will spread the load so to speak.

That is true. Car parks overflowing have been an issue in the past and this would help alleviate the problem. Imagine coming back to this on a ferry after a Suns victory at night:

For me, my experience at Metricon would benefit temendously with the removal of TWO things.

No.1 - PICKLE and
a close No.2 - SKERRITT

Now!

"Your a gerkin clapclapclapclapclapclap"

Skerritt is an improvement over Cantor (only just) , I didn't mind the fill in they had for the Sydney game last year but can't remember her name.

What ever happened to the guy in the South Sydney Rabbitohs singlet that would go down to the southern end goals after every Gold Coast goal and yell "how goes (player's name)" and the crowd would yell back "He's alright!"? Admittedly, I haven't been in that area for a while so he could still be doing it but it would be a huge shame if he has stopped. Does the guy have a nickname? If not, he should. SUNS?
