I watched the replay of the 6'ers/Stars game this afternoon. I don't think the bowling was particularly horrible, yes there were bad balls, it was just if you were a fraction off line or a fraction too full you were punished more than previous seasons. Nobbyiscool is correct when he said that the North Sydney Oval "the pitch was a road and the outfield was like a putting green", it was prepared for high scores.
In each season of the WBBL, the strike rate in the woman's game has improved (Mel said during the telecast it increased from 115 to 125 from WBBL01 to WBL02) and along with the game turning professional it will increase even more this season. It's only the first week of the WBBL03, but already it looked fairly obvious to me that the development of the batswomen is improving at a faster rate than the bowlers, their technique, strength, stroke play and the mental aspects are light years ahead of where they were in previous two seasons. The current women bowlers should improve over the next few years but I don't think we will see a huge improvement in women's bowlers until a new generation of bowlers come through the juniors have had that extra few years to develop the strength, speed and skills. I think the high scores will continue, and in the T20 format that is a good thing, because it will attract more spectators to the game, and better TV coverage in coming seasons.
Also I think Gardner performance made a lot of bowlers look a lot worse than they were, she was playing at a different level on Saturday night. Just out of interest I detailed her innings. She came in after Healy fell on 4th ball of the 2nd over, and went:
O - 4 1
O - 4 6 4 0 4 4
O - 0 4 0 0 1
O - 0 4 1
O - 0 6 1
O - 0 0 6* 1
O - 2 0 6 0 1
O - 2 0 6 2 0
O - 0 4 6 1
O - 1 0
O - 6 1 0 1
O - 0 1 4 6** 0
O - 6 6 1 X
