Three extra matches on television is a welcome surprise, although I'd guess it's only really been agreed to by Ch7 because of those cost-efficient three-game mega-days scheduled at North Sydney Oval.

On the subject of player movements/recruiting, supposedly the contracting "embargo" is nearing an end, so here's a summary of what is known and what might happen.

The three biggest pieces of news have already been confirmed (or as good as confirmed)
Perry: re-signing for the Sixers
Lanning: back to the Stars
Mooney: moving to the Scorchers

News/speculation for out-of-contract Aus/local players
Jonassen (Bris): named captain of QLD for upcoming WNCL (doesn't necessarily means she's staying and skippering the Heat, but it doesn't hurt)
Johnson (Bris): playing WNCL for NSW, from where she originally hails
Redmayne (Perth): re-signed for QLD, Heat need a keeper so she may be on the move
Garth (Perth): chance to play for the Stars as a local, having given up Irish cricket commitments
Coyte (Adel): not playing WNCL, hopefully just means she's lightening her load
Aley (SydS): retired from WNCL, think I read the intention was to just focus on T20 in her twilight years
Stalenberg (SydT): joining Tasmania for WNCL, struggled last Bash and was dropped at one stage

Next best out-of-contract Aus/local players for each team
Patterson, G Harris, Vakarewa, Molineux, Osborne, Peschel, Campbell, Griffith

Overseas players who are contracted
It's a short list: Bates (Adel), Matthews (Hob), Kapp (SydS), van Niekerk (SydS). Who knows what players from where will be able to get into the country, but we do know NZ are scheduled to tour in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

Mega to the Stars officially announced today. But one potential move from left-field surfacing:
Looks good on paper, but I think there's a bit of fool's gold about getting Devine if you've already got Mooney. Not the kind of bowler you can build an attack around, so the Scorchers will still need to find a spearhead. Bringing back a fit Katherine Brunt for the first time in a few years would be their dream scenario, because it'd probably mean holding on to Sciver too.

Priest predictably moves to the 'Canes, on the back of her surprising signing for Tasmania. Tryon is set to return, which creates the situation of another team over-catering for one area and leaving itself exposed in others.

Even with Fazackerley confirmed to sit out the WBBL season, there's going to be way too much hero-or-hack in the Hurricanes batting, and that's before considering the possible extra addition of Stalenberg. At least they were able to hold on to Vakarewa who--because of her age, proven performance, primary role and fielding ability--is probably the most valuable non-marquee player atm.

Cricinfo reported last week that at least three Indian players will play this season, pending BCCI approval (which isn't a given, but that's a story for another day). The implication was that Kaur (formerly of the Thunder) and Mandhana (Heat, Hurricanes) are lined up to play but not for their previous teams. Surely one of them must therefore be headed to the Strikers, or perhaps even both?

I can get around this. Still think they should be looking for a spinner though, someone like "Not Bernie" Ecclestone would be a great fit methinks

Having Pricey as the second spin option (and mostly using her as a specialist fielder) was without doubt their Achilles' heel last season. If they can get Stafanie Taylor back, this time for the whole tournament, then it drastically improves their balance. Availability of Windies players is riding on what happens with the World Cup qualifiers, however.

There's going to be four or five teams disappointed to miss out on Ecclestone, and those who do should go after Leigh Kasperek. Always say it but she's the best player from across the ditch yet to appear in the WBBL, plus the Kiwis are already going to be in the country and NZC are the most accommodating board to deal with (touch wood).

More WBBL activity - Scorchers will be led by Sophie Devine who joins Beth Mooney as their big acquisitions for WBBL06 so far. Heat have re-signed Amelia Kerr & Maddy Green so the Kiwis are in hot demand as usual.

Recent unsurprisingly disappointing decisions by the BCCI, which will likely mean no Indian players in the WBBL again, have been widely reported over the last few days.

But what is going on with the ECB. Much less attention given to the 0 English players currently signed. Hurricanes appear to be without Knight this season, Renegades perhaps without Wyatt. Are they moving to other teams or are they just not turning up at all? I don't know why the latter would be the case, can't think of a plausible international series that would get in the way.

Quite a few signings starting to come through - Renegades have finalised their full squad, Heat are up to 10 players, Thunder have picked up Ismail and Sammy-Jo Johnson . . . sure there are a few more on the way.

Heat join the Renegades in finalising their squad for WBBL|06:
Brisbane Heat WBBL|06 squad: Jess Jonassen (c) (Aus), Delissa Kimmince (Aus), Maddy Green (NZ), Amelia Kerr (NZ), Nadine de Klerk (SA), Georgia Prestwidge, Georgia Redmayne, Georgia Voll, Nicola Hancock, Grace Harris, Laura Harris, Charli Knott, Mikayla Hinkley, Lilly Mills, Courtney Sippel

They have done pretty well to fill the obvious voids left by Beth Mooney and Sammy Jo Johnson moving on. Like Redmayne coming in and the extra overseas international (Nadine de Klerk) should make them competitive again. I like that they have chased their 'gen next' hard too - Voll could be this year's Phoebe Litchfield if she gets a go. Different style of player admittedly, more like a young Grace Harris in what she does. but an exciting prospect.

But Mooney's ridiculously good output over the past few years makes her almost impossible to replace, so the Heat will need plenty of consistent contributors if they are to be contenders again.

Here are some stats from WBBL matches played in Sydney during the last two* seasons. The original fixture for WBBL|06 managed to avoid those pudding pits of Dumboyne etc, though I suspect such luck will have run out when the new schedule is released (hope I'm wrong!).

GroundMatches playedRuns per 120 ballsWickets per 120 balls

*Didn't include the bowler-dominated first three tournaments because it's not really representative of what we'll likely see in the upcoming season, although the general hierarchy of high-scoring grounds is the same.

Announced today that Lisa Griffith has signed with the Sixers, which seems like a much worse fit for her than my suggestion. Injuries and unavailabilities are a fact of life though, so who knows for sure what opportunities will arise.

Ben Sawyer had talked about wanting to unearth the next new fresh NSW spin bowling talent to really round out their squad, but I guess they'll have to wait another season for that.

Sarah Aley confirmed to be returning too, which just leaves Naomi Stalenberg as the only player with an Australian cap whose WBBL|06 team is yet to be officially revealed. The Hurricanes were the slowest and most disorganised team to unveil its squad last year, for whatever that is worth.

There's a lot you don't understand about the game, mate. She was fine when she had a regular role in the team, struggled when she was pushed out to a 6th option afterthought.

Not an uncommon thing, only have to look at how Vakarewa flourished after leaving the Thunder for Hobart to get a chance at finding some consistency.

We should have kept Vakerera over her.

She was rubbish too many boundary balls and I’m thankful she’s gone. I was always saying “as long as we don’t pick her” last season. Sorry don’t rate her for one second. Won’t be missed.

The lure of Lanning brings 'em back to Melbourne (or "Melbourne") with her! This should easily be the best team the Stars have ever had (unfortunately).

Excellent news for the league though. Gotta love Brunt, a true competitor, even if she is getting a bit long in the tooth. And from a broader view, it should mean more English signings are on the way.

Wyatt to the Thunder now? Or perhaps the Strikers. Not sure where Ecclestone ends up after this news, and maybe Garth is going to stay at the Scorchers after all...

Does anyone know how come it’s taking so long to release the new schedule?

Is it taking so long, though. The hub announcement was only a couple of weeks ago. Wouldn't be surprising or unreasonable if the fixture wasn't released until the international series has finished.

There is literally a month to go and we don’t have a fixture yet

not to mention, they should have it ready for the intentional series so the broadcasters can promote the hell out of it with dates etc

So what, the AFL released the fixtures for heaps of games with shorter notice than that. And we already know most of the key details anyway, including start date, number of matches, general location (probably the three main venues too).

Will the broadcasters promote the fixture or just use it as motivation to take another dump on Cricket Australia?
